Work Text:
Phoenix smiled as he led Edgeworth to the front door; he was leaving.
Finally.
The defense attorney loved him, but he had to get his fix in. "I'll see you later, Miles."
He shut the door on him. That wasn't how Wight tended to act. Was something wrong? Maybe Ms. Fey knew; they talked about more personal things. "I hope she knows what's wrong."
He headed towards the new restaurant the girl had talked about. "Mr. Edgeworth? It's nice to see you here."
He sat across from the girl. She had a bowl of noodles, but, wait, was that burger chunks in it? What was wrong with this girl? "Yes, well, you and Wright are close, and I know something wrong with him, but he hasn't said anything that could even hint towards what's wrong."
Maya frowned. "Oh, THAT, well, Nick has had a," she lowered her voice. "self-harm problem. He doesn't want anyone to know. I only know 'cause I caught him once."
Edgeworth felt his eyes go wide. "He does? This has to be my fault. If I hadn't left..."
Maya shook her head. "No way, it's no one's fault. It just happened. Things happen. Try to talk about it with him, though. Maybe he'll be more open about it with you. The key for the bathroom is by the desk."
They had a secret key for that? He shook his head. "Thank you, Ms. Fey. I'll get to it."
-------------------------------------------------
He held the key.
It's okay; just put it in the lock.
He turned the key.
It's okay; just open the door.
He let out a gasp. "Phoenix!" He rushed over to the man and held him close. "What happened?"
Phoenix looked up at him. "Miles? What are you doing here?"
He felt the prosecutor start to tend to his wounds. "Making sure you're okay." Miles felt his eyes prick with tears. "Why didn't you tell me?"
Phoenix looked away. "I didn't want you to think of me as a burden."
Miles held him closer. "Darling, I would never consider you a burden, especially over something that I've done before."
Phoenix looked back at him. "You have? Why di-oooooh, I get it."
The prosecutor kissed his forehead. "Good, now, shall we talk about how this started?"
He received a nod. That was a good start, at least.
