Title: Other Half
author:Cindy Ryan
category: alternate storyline

Actress and PI Samantha Swift shivered as she sat in the ICU waiting room. She was still wearing the red dress from the poker game but had long since ditched her blonde wig. Sam knew it wasn't the air conditioning making her shiver. Her partner Eddie Valetik had just gotten out of surgery. He'd been shot by a sniper trying to take out the con man they were questioning. Jessup Lance was now in federal police custody with numerous bank frauds and other scams to his long rap sheet.

Sam stood and left the crowded waiting room. Berto, Zeus, Monica and their client Emily were keeping vigil with her. Detective Rollins was leading the investigation and had arranged uniformed officers to guard the ICU. Sam walked over to Eddie's room and stopped looking through the plate glass window. Eddie looked ghostly pale with various machines hooked to him monitoring his vitals. The doctor had told Sam and the others that Eddie was lucky. An inch either way and the bullet would've hit his heart. The bullet had still hit Eddie's heart but just barely grazed it. Enough for a six hour surgery to repair the damage. Sam swallowed hard and tried to blink back the tears. She remembered the seemingly eternal wait for the ambulance to arrive at the Nouveau hotel. Long agonizing moments as she'd watched the blood seep through her fingers as Sam had applied pressure to Eddie's wound. Long moments where Sam had watched her partner slip into unconsciousness. Not before he'd whispered something to her. Something Sam would never forget. Something she was trying not to question now.

'I-I love you, Sam.'

The tears broke free then and Sam didn't try to stop them. The change in their relationship was happening so fast that Sam was still trying to catch her breath. Still trying to sort out her feelings. Sam was praying she got the chance to tell Eddie how she felt once she figured it out. He had to be okay; just had to be.

“He's stubborn.”Zeus said softly coming up to stand by Sam's left. “He'll pull through this.”

“What if....”Sam couldn't help but wonder in a tear filled voice.

“Hey now.”The older African-American man scolded gently as he laid a hand on Sam's left arm. “No doubts. He needs our full support.”

“I know.”Sam whispered.

Zeus pulled Sam into a hug and she accepted the embrace gratefully.

“He's not going anywhere.”Zeus commented quietly. “Take a lot more than a sniper bullet.”

“Eddie and I haven't known each other that long, Zeus.”Sam said as she turned to look at the ICU bed where Eddie lay. “Why is it that I can't picture my life without him?”

“Because the universe is funny that way.”Zeus replied softy.

They stood like that for a long time. Sam and Eddie's relationship had endured a rough start. He hadn't wanted to deal with Sam at all. However the more days they spent together a friendship slowly formed. On top of that trust grew. Eddie's last words to her in the hotel room drifted back through Sam's thoughts.

'I love you, Sam.'

Sam couldn't help but wonder if that had been real or the situation. She needed Eddie to wake up. She needed him to recover and help her sort out their relationship and whatever future they had ahead of them.
