Work Text:
Alphys snuggled closer into Undyne. The two were relaxing after a long day of work for the both of them, watching some anime together (although Undyne wasn't paying as much attention as Alphys was). The students today had been pretty hyper, and she had a done of grading to do, so it was nice to de-stress. Undyne had been working especially hard these past couple days, but spending time with her girlfriend was always worth it.
A crash outside made Alphys jump. "W-what was that?" She exclaimed, turning the volume down on the television. "Probably nothin'" Undyne reassured her, holding her protectively. Alphys shrugged her arm away, going to look at the window. "Maybe it's Mew Mew, I left some food and milk out earlier." She tried to get a good look, but it was dark out and hard to see anything.
"Mew Mew?" Undyne looked a little confused. "Um, m-my cat. Or at least, I t-think it's a cat. I've b-been leaving milk out for it and it's been d-disappearing, so-" She wrung her scaly hands nervously as she went to open the door.
However, the sight that greeted her was anything but a cat. She let out a startled "eep!", almost scaring away the "cat" that was currently drinking the milk. The cat food was gone. Undyne rushed over to the door, ready to pummel whatever could be threatening Alphys. "Hey, punk! What are you doing here, eating my girl's cat food?"
Susie just backed away and wiped the milk off her lips with her sleeve. "Didn't know Alphys was putting this out. Tasted good." She looked tired, and was shivering but visibly trying to hide it. "Been coming here for weeks."
"Y-you know, if you wanted food, t-then you c-could've just asked me. B-but um, d-don't you have enough to eat at home?" Alphys asked, her tone becoming worried. Even if Susie was a little misbehaved at times, and pretty scary, she still cared about all her students. Susie didn't respond for a little bit. "Dad won't let me in the house. Says it's cause of my grades." Her grades had plummeted recently. Although Kris's friendship with her was helping her social skills, it wasn't doing much for her academic skills.
"In this cold? Doesn't he know you'll freeze? Hell, you're a reptile, you're cold blooded! If Alphys or I was locked out, we'd freeze!" Undyne's aggression towards Susie started to shift towards whoever her father was. What kind of idiot leaves their own kid out in the cold just because of an F or two? I didn't have the best grades but my parents wouldn't do something like that!
"C-come on in, please." Alphys gestured for her to come closer, and Susie did. She didn't look directly at either of them though. She's taller than me- Fears aside, this was a teen who needed her help.
"Undyne, m-mind making some ramen? W-warm food might help a lot." Once they were all back inside, she shut the door and went to go grab some blankets. "G-go sit on the couch for now. You can st-stay here for the night, i-if you want." Susie relaxed, doing as Alphys asked. Her eyes drifted towards the anime that was still playing, watching with curiosity.
Alphys managed to find and grab the warmest blankets she could find. Undyne was just finishing making ramen, thankfully without burning the kitchen down. "Here." The tall fish lady handed Susie a fork and the ramen, while Alphys wrapped a blanket around her. Normally she'd complain or at least mutter something under her breath, but she was too tired and grateful to complain. If you act rude they'll kick you out too.
She wolfed down the food, a smile coming to her face. Undyne took the cup, walking out to the kitchen to dispose of it. Alphys followed her. "I-is there a chance you could-" Undyne cut her off. "I'm way ahead of you, Alphy. I'll find that jerk and invert his face! Ngahhhh!" She pounded her fist against the counter in frustration, cracks forming on impact. "Whoops, sorry Alph."
"It's okay. B-but um, more um, legal action might be advised. Even if y-you beat up her father, t-that's not gonna help in the long run. B-besides, he might t-take it out on her." Her fingers drummed against the countertop, nails clicking.
"We need to get her away from him, and keep her away." A loud noise made them both jump, and they turned to see Susie asleep on the couch, snoring away. Undyne smirked, and Alphys could tell she had an idea. "What if, and this probably sounds crazy but, what if we took her in?"
"H-haven't we already?" Alphys asked. "No, I mean like, for more than just a night. Like we'd be her parents. Who wouldn't want to have a cool teacher mom like you?" Undyne quite literally swept her off her feet, spinning her around the kitchen. "W-well, it's all up to Susie, b-but if she's up for the idea..." Another glance towards the sleeping teen. "Sure!"
-----
Court cases are one of the most boring things on Earth for someone like Susie.
Naturally, she could've just gone to the dark world when her dad locked her out, but the school doors were locked. Hungry, she went to the only other place she knew, and that's how she ended up here.
Alphys and Undyne were patient with her, much more than her dad had ever been. Undyne's energy and aggression matched her own at times, and Alphys was trying to help her more often with her schoolwork. While custody matters were being sorted out, she was staying with them. But when they suggested staying permanently, she knew she had to make a decision.
One of the easiest she ever made.
Her dad was put on trial, and yeah she had to make a couple statements and stuff, but for the most part she didn't have to do much. Papers were signed, and her "dad" was thrown in jail.
But the past is in the past, and the present is what's most important.
Alphys set down a cake, chocolate (Susie's favorite) with white frosting. The words Welcome home Susie! have been written in purple, a frosting image of her standing next to the words. She plunged her fist into it with a smirk, shoving a handful of cake into her mouth. "Yeah!" Undyne followed suit, digging in with nothing but her hands and making a mess next to her daughter. Alphys just rolled her eyes, cutting a somehow still intact piece for herself.
Eventually, a food fight escalated, with handfuls of cake being tossed until there was nothing left. She's full, and happy. Even if they were tossing cake at each other two seconds ago, she feels safe. Her old dad would've yelled at her for making a mess and forced her to clean until the entire house was spotless. She's still happy to help her moms clean up the cake stuck to the walls and floor. There's even some on the ceiling.
Later that night they relax on the couch to watch anime, the same one that was playing when she first arrived. Undyne cheers at all the battle scenes, and she listens to Alphys talk and talk, something about "snail ice cream". She's just happy to be here.
She's home.
