The Wendigo of Fear

Summary:

The Wendigo. A legend from long ago. It was said to be created when a Native American group or a settler group got trapped somewhere in the winter and one of them became a cannibal to survive. It could go for months without eating. It's a great hunter in the day and a damn near-perfect one at night. Some variations of the legend say it's as tall as trees. Some say it only becomes a humanoid figure while others argue it loses all human traits. Others say with absolute confidence that it eats it's victims alive.
You might not believe this...And don't worry that's okay...a lot of people don't...because it's just a story to tell around a campfire or...to scare kids into going to bed early...
You don't have to believe this. After all...it's just a story...Right?

Chapter Text

~~~~~
     The grim atmosphere in the meeting room was suffocating. Hundreds of mangled bodies had been found scattered across the forest just outside the city of Musutafu, Japan. Behind Nedzu was a board showing images of people, if you could even call them that anymore, with missing limbs, heads torn off their body, bones splintered and worn, abnormally shaped bites of flesh torn away, blood everywhere. As well as research trying to find who or what did this and why.
     “I will be sending out four of you to find who is causing the deaths of these people and put them away,” Nedzu says, “I’ve put a lot of thought into who will be going, I’ve chosen Eraserhead so that you can erase the quirk of the one responsible for this, we are likely dealing with a person or animal with a quirk. Midnight, I’ve chosen you so that you can cause them to fall unconscious, and I’ve chosen All Might and Endeavor for their power.”
     He peered at the mentioned people, looking for objections or volunteers, but there were none. Nedzu nodded to the group and they were on their way to plan and prepare for the mission.
~~~~~

     It had been a few days since the meeting and the heroes walked through the forest. They all shared the feeling that they were being watched, it didn’t help that the forest was dead silent and nearly pitch black besides the light that came from Endeavor’s palm. It had been almost thirty minutes of walking endlessly before they heard something.

     “Mama?” A young girl called out, “Mama, is that you?” The heroes hurried to where the voice was coming from only to find... nothing. “Mama? Where are you? I don’t want to play anymore… it’s scary outside...” The calls kept coming but each time they followed the sound of the child’s voice, the group was met with nothing but more trees.

     “Who’s there,” Endeavor barked “Show yourself!”

     Hello! I’m over here mister!” the girl shouted, “Can you help me find my mommy?”

     “Can you tell us what happened?” Midnight called out, searching for where the voice came from.

     “Mommy said we could play hide and seek, but I can’t find her.”

     “Okay hun, we can help you find your mom,” Midnight assured, still struggling to see where the girl is, “But we have to find you first, Endeavor, why’d the fire go out, I can’t see.”

     All light that the man was providing had disappeared. “Yes Endeavor, please re-light the fire,” All Might added. There was no response from said man which caused the three heroes to look in the direction of where he had been, only to see that he wasn’t there or anywhere around them.

     “What the-” Eraserhead began, only to be cut off by a short scream. Midnight had disappeared as well. The heroes silently panicked, looking all around them but seeing nothing.

     “I don’t see anything,” All Might said in a panicked voice, the smile he was known for now gone, “There’s nothing there!” A low growl hit the two’s ears, feeling like it was coming from all directions, shaking them to the core, suffocating pressure in their necks stopping them from making even the smallest noise.

     “All Might,” Eraserhead whispered, “we never looked above us, did we.” The duo slowly looked up, dreading what they would see. A large… thing, was perched on the tree branches above them, large antlers protruding from grey skin pulled tightly over its bones. The only indication of eyes is the faint red glow. Lips pulled back into a vicious snarl, revealing many razor-sharp teeth.

     “Good night, heroes,” the creature spoke, it was the same voice of the little girl they had been looking for. Realization hit them like a train, this was the thing that had killed so many innocent people. Neither hero had time to react before darkness embraced them.
