When she heard Wendy hiss in pain, Chelia quickly pulled her hands away from her shoulder.
“I’m sorry,” she murmured.
“I’m fine, it just burns a little,” Wendy said and gave her a small smile, probably to calm her down.
A little hesitant Chelia took the disinfectant again, and as delicately as possible she began to pass the cotton on the wound again, cleaning it from the blood and dust. She couldn’t help but think that if she didn’t get in trouble this wouldn’t happen and Wendy wouldn’t got hurt. All because Chelia had wanted to take on a mission, despite the fact that she knew she hadn’t been able to, since she lost her magic. It had been fortunate that Wendy had secretly followed her, and she had protected her when Chelia was attacked.
She felt tears fill her eyes but refused to cry, took some clean bandages and began to cover the wound. When she finished, she moved on to the next wound and looked down at her friend’s knee, peeled and encrusted with blood. She began to clean it and she sadly thought that if she still had magic, she could heal Wendy much better than that.
“I’m sorry, it’s my fault that this happened to you,” Chelia murmured.
“No, it’s not your...”.
“I shouldn’t have taken that mission,” Chelia snapped irritably. “Lyon told me, but I didn’t want to hear him. I’m a fool and now you’re hurt.” She growled annoyed. And the worst part was that she couldn’t even help her. Not anymore. Chelia didn’t regret the decision she made when she chose to give up on magic, she would do it again, but that was still frustrating.
“It is not your fault,” Wendy snapped, and Chelia looked up in surprise. Wendy usually never raised her voice. At that moment, however, Wendy was looking at her with disarming sincerity and confidence. “I convinced Lyon to let you go when he found out you wanted to take a mission on the sly. I told him I would follow and protect you,” she revealed. Chelia let go of her friend’s wound.
“Why did you do that?” she asked confused. She imagined that Wendy had followed her, but she had no idea that she had talked about it with Lyon, nor that the boy had accepted that she would take a mission on her own. Since she could no longer use magic, Chelia took simple missions and she always had to be accompanied by someone.
Wendy nervously nibbled her lower lip and Chelia felt an irrepressible desire to lean forward and join her lips to her friend’s soft ones. She blushed slightly at the thought but she tried not to think about it, at the moment there were more important things to think about, like Wendy’s injuries and why she had convinced Lyon to let her go on a mission.
“Because you were sad and I thought a mission would cheer you up,” Wendy said. Chelia smiled slightly.
“So, we’re two fools,” she considered and she looked down again and began to treat Wendy’s wound again. The friend laughed softly but didn’t answer.
“In any case I convinced Lyon to let you go, I shouldn’t have done that. I thought I was able to protect you,” Wendy said a little bitterly.
“Well, you protected me. But I can’t even cure you,” Chelia said in frustration. She didn’t want to be envious of her friend, but seeing how much Wendy had improved in combat while she couldn’t even create a spark of magic was annoying.
“You’re doing a good job,” Wendy objected.
“You’ve been hissing in pain for at least twenty minutes,” Chelia grunted irritably.
“Trust me, compared to Erza you’re much more delicate,” Wendy retorted with a small chuckle. Chelia smiled. She didn’t think it took her long to be more delicate than Erza, but at least Wendy seemed fine if she had the strength to laugh. She finished bandaging Wendy’s knee and looked up, looking for more wounds on her body but it seemed they weren’t there. She had cured all the worst cuts.
“Thanks,” Wendy said. Chelia smiled and looked at her friend for a few more seconds. Even with a cut to the cheek and even with a dark smack to her forehead, Wendy was incredibly pretty. It was unfair that someone could be so beautiful even in those states. For a moment Chelia felt her breath catch in her throat and she couldn’t help but look at the girl with the heart that seemed to explode.
“What’s up? Do I have something on my face?” Wendy asked confused.
“No, no,” Chelia said quickly. Damn, she was feeling too flustered and it wasn’t okay.
She had known for a while that she had feelings for Wendy, but she had never done anything because she didn’t want to ruin their friendship. But now she wanted to tell her, she wanted to know if Wendy would like her too. Chelia had always thought that one had to take risks in love, her cousin always told her and she agreed. It was always worth it. So, she took a deep breath and took courage.
“Would you like to go out with me? On a date?” she asked before she could regret it. Wendy’s eyes widened and Chelia suddenly felt stupid. Was she asking it when Wendy was hurt because of her? What was going through her mind?
“You mean how... Cana and Mira do?” Wendy asked embarrassed. Chelia nodded slowly without being able to say a word, and the few seconds that passed seemed like an eternity. Then Wendy smiled shyly. “I’d like it very much.”
Relief flooded Chelia all at once and she smiled broadly. “Great!” she exclaimed and the two shared a sweet smile. Then she started to get up, but before she could, Wendy took her face in the hands and pressed her lips to hers. It was a sweet, short kiss, practically just a touch of lips, but it was enough to make Chelia feel a real tornado in her stomach. She stared dazedly at Wendy, who had cheeks on fire and was looking at her a little frightened.
“Sorry, I…” she stammered but Chelia laughed and took Wendy’s hand in hers.
“It was nice,” she said.
“Oh,” Wendy muttered and she relaxed her shoulders. “Yes, it was,” she admitted and wrapped her fingers around Chelia’s. They shared another smile and Chelia already knew that dating Wendy was the best decision in her life.
