Work Text:
Varg have been tailing her since he noticed her, carefully, walking close to the walls, he made sure to stick to the shadows, finding it amusing that she was careful. ‘’Where are you going, little princess?’’ he whispered to himself, smiling.
Varg frowns when he notices she’s going in the opposite direction than where the gates are, curiously walking slowly behind her, but not slow enough for her to be out of sight.
She does a small run from the halls to the garden, sticking to the shadows, Varg does the same.
He smirks as he sees her lean against a tree and sits down, ‘’you left the comfort of your room, for what? A tree?’’ He scoffs, he sits in wait for someone.
He expected her to meet someone here, at least that would’ve made sense for her leaving her room in the middle of the night.
It’s been about two mins, he grows tired of waiting, he strolls over to her, ever so calming.
She’s in view, and he notices that her face is buried into her knees, he opens his mouth to speak, but stops as he suddenly hears Lucette sob, it was just a soft one, but even muffled it was clear she had a breakdown.
He stands frozen in time, not sure what to do, he turns around and notice that nobody would see them, but with her crying, they would easily be found by a guard or worse… The queen.
‘’Tch’’ he clicks his tongue, taking a deep breath, putting on his mischievous smirk, he walks calmly over to her, ‘’well, well, well, if it isn’t our own little princess-‘’ he walks closer to her, making sure she’d be able to see him.
She doesn’t look up however, he finds this frustrating, clearing his throat to speak again, but Lucette’s sob cuts him off, ‘’stop…’’ He can barely hear her whisper.
He looks at her, unsure what to say, or do, no matter what sarcastic thing he’d say, it would probably be ignored.
He squats in front of her, he moves his hand closer to her, Lucette’s face is warm, he wipes away tears with his thumb.
She exhales, and looks up at him, she looks so sad, even though she’s trying to give him an angry glare.
‘’What should I do with you, hm?’’ He smirks, she puts her head down against her knees again, Varg’s hand still on her cheek, he sighs.
They couldn’t stay here, despite what he knew he should do, he put his right arm under her legs, and left to hold her back.
‘’!!!’’ Lucette gasps in surprise, she doesn’t say anything, just looks at him in shock. Her face is warm, she’s not sure if it’s from the crying, or from the fact that Varg is holding her bridal style.
‘’Put me down, Varg.’’ Lucette tries to sound as commanding as possible, he chuckles, ‘’cute.’’
He brings her to a part of the garden she couldn’t remember ever exploring, she looks around in confusion, Varg smirks, ‘’what? Never been here?’’
Lucette shakes her head, ‘’how did you know about this place?’’
‘’Fritz.’’ Is all he says.
She doesn’t press him, which he found odd, ‘’oh? No comment?’’
‘’Why does-‘’ she stops, feeling sad, remembering that Fritz would likely not come back, ‘’he… know about this place? The knights don’t train over here, and there’s—‘’
She’s cut off by Varg’s chuckle, she couldn’t get used to his dark voice, it was similar, but also absolutely not at all, like Fritz’s voice.
‘’You didn’t even know this place existed, princess. For all you know-‘’ He looks down at her, with a smirk that turns her face into the same shade as a tomato, she knew well what that smirk meant, ‘’this is where the maids and knights have their…’’ He moves his head to the sides, ‘’fun after work activities.’’
‘’D-Don’t say things like that!’’ Lucette turn her face away from him, he laughs, she can feel her body shake when he does.
‘’Put me down.’’ She totally forgot he was carrying her, he held her so carefully, and she oddly felt safe…
‘’No can do, princess.’’
‘’Varg.’’ Warning in her voice.
‘’Soon there-‘’
‘’Put. Me. Down.’’ She tried again, he held her tighter, she groans in frustration.
She looks at him, ‘’where’s your cane?’’
‘’Not here, don’t need it.’’
She rose an eyebrow, ‘’what if I suddenly fight you?’’
‘’I don’t need a cane to take you down.’’ He snorts, ‘’you’re light weighted, no strength in your punches, oh and, I’m taller than you.’’
‘’…Not that much taller…’’
‘’Tall enough- ah, here we are.’’ He puts her down, there’s a fountain, bushes with flowers, hedges too high for her to climb.
She walk over to the fountain, he watches her.
‘’I'm surprised you didn’t know about this place, princess’’
‘’It’s beautiful’’ she looks around her, this could almost be the perfect date spot. She shakes her head, trying to get the thought to leave her.
‘’yeah…’’ He looks at her, but quickly looks away as she turns to him.
‘’So…’’ She sheepishly looks down at the ground, then at him, ‘’why did you bring me here?’’
He didn’t really have an answer, he honestly just acted on impulse.
Maybe this was something Fritz wanted… He frowned, looking kinda defeated, wasn’t he allowed to have any thoughts himself?
Why did he bring her? What could he possibly obtain?
‘’You were too much in the open.’’ He finally says, ‘’if a guard walked past-‘’
‘’I’ve seen no guards-‘’
‘’Or the queen.’’
Lucette froze, she wouldn’t even know how to explain to her mother why she was crying alone or crying at all.
‘’Thank you…’’
Varg looks at her, ‘’for what?’’
She shrugs, looking away from him, she couldn’t believe she just thanked Varg. But there was one thing that bugged her, ‘’why though?’’
‘’Why I didn’t just bring you back to your room?’’
Lucette nodded, she hoped this wasn’t anything… Predatory.
‘’It looked like you needed air… And’’ he stepped backwards, ‘’time alone.’’ He did a half-hearted curtsey and turned around to leave.
She stood there, watching him, for some reason she didn’t him to, but she wasn’t sure why.
‘’Varg-‘’ Lucette reached out, barely touching his jacket, he stopped but didn’t turn around.
‘’Um…’’ She swallowed, suddenly very shy, what was she doing? She hated Varg, and yet she didn’t want him to leave.
‘’I don’t mind… the company.’’ She tried to sound as confident as possible, as if Varg should be grateful she even suggested him to stay.
He replied with a scoff, ‘’what, growing fond of me already?’’ He didn’t turn around, but she could see his grin.
‘’Fine, leave.’’ She turned around and sat down at the stone edge of the fountain, looking at the bottom, some coins laid there, she wondered what the wishes were… And if they were fulfilled.
Varg sat down next to her, presented her with a coin, ‘’make a wish, princess. Maybe it’ll come true.’’ He scoffed.
She took it, held it close to her heart, closed her eyes.
What did she want?
Her mother to return to the light side?
For more bravery?
or…
She felt her body go heavy, guilt swept over her, it wasn’t her fault and technically nothing she could do to fix it.
Lucette felt Varg’s hand over hers, she opened her eyes, looking softly at him.
He used her hand to hold up the coin, ready to use it to throw the coin, so it would still count as her wish.
‘’May Fritz come back, and make Varg disappear.’’ He whispered, he swallowed and pulled her wrist, ready to throw the coin.
She held her arm still, resisting his attempt, he didn’t look at her, he knew this is what she wanted… Truly.
She didn’t want him to disappear, maybe just… Separate them, different body?
‘’No… that’s not what I want’’ she thought a bit, smiled softly and threw the coin, it made a tiny splash.
Varg narrowed his eyes at her, chuckling, ‘’what did you wish for?’’
‘’If I tell, it won’t come true.’’ She rolled her eyes.
They sat for a while, comfortable silence, the sun rising, Lucette exhaled, ‘’I better get back to my room…’’ She got up and started to walk, she stopped when she realised he didn’t follow her.
‘’Varg?’’
He looked almost sad, like a cloud hung over him, she approached him ‘’Varg?’’ she tried again.
He got up quickly and walked past her, ‘’come along, Princess.’’
She jogged after him, to catch up.
They saw a guard come around the corner, he hadn’t seen them yet.
Varg grabbed her arm, ‘’h-hey!’’ She protested, he pulled her quickly towards her room, the guard stepped to the side, letting them pass.
He gently pushed her into her room, she turned around, ‘’what was that all about?’’ She didn’t know what she expected, but the sudden aggression made it seem like they didn’t just exist around each other in a hidden garden, totally calm and comforting… But maybe that was just what she felt.
He leaned closer to her, ‘’if we seem too friendly, they might pass it to the queen…’’ He didn’t look into her eyes, avoiding them more like.
Lucette nodded carefully, it made sense…
Varg pulled away, still not looking at her.
Lucette grabbed the sleeve of his jacket, ‘’Varg-‘’ she said softly, ‘’thank you.’’ She let go, and watched as he turned a corner, a clear smile on his face.
She closed the door.
