Chapter 1: Princess Yashiro Nene

Chapter Text

Once upon a time, there was a kingdom in a world filled with magic. The king, to protect the queen and the princesses of the kingdom, issued a law that exiled all the magic users from their territory.

The people thrived without the threats of magic on the street, and life in the kingdom was very peaceful. Despite that, the eldest princess, Yashiro Nene, always felt bored. She was the only princess who remembers the days when magic was still allowed inside the kingdoms. She missed the candle flames that would sparkle in different colours. She missed the travelling vendors and the stalls that float from market to market. Most of all, she missed the feeling of surprise when she saw all those magical things.

When the king announced that Nene will marry the prince from another kingdom that also prohibits magic, she was devastated and cried in her room for nights.

Well, the other people thought she was crying.

On a dark night, she boarded the carriage bound for the other kingdom, her luggages in one hand and her other hand resting on the frilly dress she wore. The coachman was astonished by the sight of the princess. He praised the gods that their kingdom was so fortunate to have a damsel this beautiful as their future queen.

She looked collected, her red eyes focused and betraying none of her emotions, gleaming like rubies under the moonlight. How befitting of a sovereign, he thought.

The horses picked up their pace, racing across the muddy road. She sat rigidly in the backseat of the carriage, not saying a single word.

The princess must be tired from the celebrations in her kingdom, thought the coachman with a chuckle. Our prince was like that as well. He was dead beat when I checked on him before leaving the kingdom! I’ll let her sleep, then.

As the coachman thought this, a huge explosion knocked the carriage off-balance, and nearly sent him flying. And he would have, if not for his tight grip on the reins.

One side of the carriage was entirely charred, and the smoking remains of the door laid scattered on the path behind him.

Only the dress that the princess wore was left in the carriage. It was as if Yashiro Nene had never been there.
