Have you ever wanted to cry, but just...couldn't?
Yeah...
Um...
Animatronics couldn't cry.
But as Sun watched his home burst into roaring, glowing flames, he could nearly feel his throat clog with non-existent tears.
It hurt.
"Sun?" A gentle, raspy voice muttered from behind him. As soon as Moon placed a tender hand on his shoulder, Sun crumpled, sinking to the floor.
"I'm so sorry, I tried to keep it neat a–and clean and–" Sun panicked, artificial smile growing tighter and tighter by the second.
Moon kneeled next to the animatronic, taking one hand in his own. "It's alright," Moon assured, "I'll help fix it."
He knew that he couldn't fix it; no one could.
Trust me, if he could, he would.
"Close your eyes for me." Moon guided, running a finger down the cold metal of the bridge of Suns nose, coaxing him into closing his eyes. "There." Moon gave a sad smile.
"Why?" Sun finally asked, leaning into Moon for comfort, voice weak yet hopeful.
"Because, if we don't pay attention to..." He trailed off, voice awkwardly straining, "I can tell you a bedtime story... Don't think, Starlight. Just listen..."
Sun nodded, keeping his eyes closed obediently.
"There once was a young Sun," Moon improvised, "Who dreamed of making the best cookies in the whole wide world... He went to Freddy for advice, but little did he know, Freddy had no clue how to make cookies either!"
Sun let out a gasp, "Then who's gonna make cookies?"
Moon chuckled, unanswering, "They never really figured it out and ended up burning the cookies! But they had fun while doing so, so maybe, the real treat is just the memories you make on the way."
Moon couldn't resist the soft sob he let out, holding the other protectively close to his chest.
"I love you." Moon admitted, "Now sleep, Dear One. You'll wake up eventually. I promise. I'll keep you safe."
Moon still couldn't cry real tears, but maybe the melting of his plastic coverings could be a substitute.
"Promise?" Sun brought a hand to grip Moons collar, still keeping his eyes securely shut.
"Of course. Just don't look. We'll be okay."
And maybe, Sun would believe that if he couldn't feel the heat engulfing the two in flames.
