Through The Darkness

Summary:

Yaz refuses to admit she is sick

Work Text:

Yaz had been home for a weekend with her family, but like she has said before she loves her family but they really do drive her nuts. She had been incredibly glad to see the old police box in front of her apartment again.

She knocked on the old blue door - which she had made a habit of doing as several times she had been almost accidentally murdered by the doctor, who was nearly always shocked by her return as she was often busying herself with some random task that was nearly never necessary. The door opened for her, most likely the tardis letting her in because the doctor was busy doing something else. She stepped in close to the door behind her, she whispered a small “thanks” to the machine around her.

To her surprise, the Doctor was in the console room just talking to Dan who was sitting on the stairs while the Doctor leaned on the console facing away from the doors. She watched Dan's face twist into a deep confusion, she couldn't help but smirk - she knew he had probs walked right into a really long and involved explanation about something he really didn't get. He looked instantly relieved when he saw Yaz standing there, he got up immediately to hug her because he missed her but mostly to get out of this lecture.

“What did you do, Scouse?” she asked when he hugged her

“I don't even know,” he whispered back

“Yaz,” a bright voice came from behind him, he moved out of the way as she saw a bright smile coming from the doctor. It made her giggle a little, she offered a small smile back and a little wave.

“Doctor, how many times do I have to tell you about boring our friends with unnecessary information?” she folds her arms in front of her chest and raises an eyebrow at her.

“He asked!” she says defensively

“I did not! I asked you when Yaz was coming back and you started raving about iconic stabilisers or something,” he informs

“Ionic stabilisers,” she corrects, Dan opens his mouth to say something else before Yazs cuts in.

“Ok, ok children stop fighting,” she laughed - they were both also ironically older than her.

“Got a destination planned?” Yaz asks the doctor moving closer to the console. The doctor's face lights up once more and she starts turning knobs and flipping switches. She felt the ship take off grabbing onto the side of the console. When she felt a piercing pain in her head begin to build into a continuous ache around her head, she hadn't felt ill, just more tired than usual but she thought nothing of it and assumed it would go away eventually.

Obviously, this trip they had gone on had almost automatically turned into an emergency, the ache in Yaz’s head had just gotten worse with the running and orders being thrust her way her body was becoming increasingly weak. But she refused to believe anything was wrong with her; she was just tired.

It got to the point where she was trying to help civilians to the safety of a cave mountain the doctor had found. But it was tedious to get there and there was a lot of running and hiding and before she knew it she was vomiting around this rock - but she had to carry on helping these people, she was just tired and overworked. She was fine.

Although her body was telling her something completely different she lost count of how many times she vomited coming back and forth collecting civilians. When they were finally finished and were walking back to the tardis, Yaz could hardly feel her legs. She was exhausted, the pressure in her head was still very much there, a lot worse than before - she just needed some rest she was telling herself. They got into the console room, the dim lighting was somewhat a comfort to her. The doctor was already moving back to the console, still eager for more adventure.

“So where to next?” she asked excitedly

Dan was next to her but Yaz was walking slowly trying to keep her balance. She placed her hand on the crystal pillar steadying herself. She had zoned out of the conversation in front of her until the doctor asked.

“Yaz are you ok?”

“Yeah fine,” she forced a smile through the fuzz, but the doctor and Dan only deepened their frowns.

“You look really pale, are you sure?” dan asks

“Yeah yeah I'm fi….” She feels her legs lose the battle of weight, beginning to buckle beneath her and her vision is static.

Dan rushes towards her, catching her before she hits the floor, lowering down slowly so she is sitting on the steps to the console.

“What's happening?” the doctor asks, moving in front of where Yaz is sitting.

“Nothing I'm fine,” Yaz tries again, attempting to get up but the weakness in her legs preventing her from standing.

“Like hell you are,” Dan says with a hand on her shoulder “you vomited nine times that I saw,”

“I was just tired and ran too hard, honestly I'm fine,” she gets up, but immediately falls forward, losing consciousness completely.

She then wakes up in her bed on the tardis, banging headache but significantly less dizzy. She tries to remember how she actually got there. She has a vague memory of being picked up by Dan and insisting she is fine. She also vaguely remembers Dan threatening to punch the person who came up with the word ‘fine’.

Then the doctor took off her shoes and tucked the duvet around her and now she is here. It isn't long before someone enters her room only standing by the door not coming further into the room she can tell who it is by the clothing, that long blue coat, dead give away.

“That was really stupid,” she says leaning against the wall her arms crossed

“Which bit?” Yaz knew she messed up, the doctor forms a small smile heading towards the bed sitting on the edge next to Yaz.

“All of it,” she says “why didn't you tell me?”

“I mean we were kind of preoccupied,” she answers “I didn't feel ill before we were just there for a long time and it just got worse, but there were other more important things going on,”

“Yes but you still insisted you were fine after,” she raises an eyebrow

“I don't like being sick,”

“No kidding,” she laughs slightly

“Shut up,” she mutters “I’ve never liked it, I hate missing out and I don't like being looked after,”

“Who doesn't like being looked after,” the doctor asks mockingly

“You,” Yaz quips back

“Touché,” the doctor looks away smiling, Yaz can't help the butterflies being produced by this conversation - the softness and delicate nature it has, the domesticity of her sitting on the edge of her bed, she hadn't even clocked this is the first time the doctor has been in her bedroom.

“Well you won't be left out of anything, I will make it my mission. Also, Dan will probably come here to escape from me anyway,” she smiles moving away from the bed again “but you are gonna have to get used to being looked after,” she winks leaving the room once more.

The next few days Yaz spent in bed, Dan and the doctor spent time tending to her and entertaining her with things like watching movies, playing card games - including ‘Bullshit’ which Yaz and Dan enjoyed playing because the doctor was notoriously bad at it, it took her two games to get the premise.

And the movie nights in her bed Dan would be sat in her chair and the doctor cross-legged on her bed next to her. More often than not she would fall asleep during the movies and more than once she found herself curled around the doctor which surprisingly the doctor didn't seem to mind. A couple of times Yaz had noticed the doctor stroking her hair with her hands or holding one of her hands while she was asleep.

And there was that one night, Dan had left for his room. The doctor was about to leave believing Yaz to be asleep when she caught her hand causing the doctor to turn back quickly.

“Stay,”

The whisper pierced through the darkness.
