Work Text:

This wasn’t how it was supposed to end. Sara should’ve been leading the Shogun’s Army to victory, not bleeding out under the broken remains of a ship. She had failed; she had failed the Shogun, her clan, and herself. Sara silently thanked that none of her men were here to witness her final moments.

She only wished that she could see Kokomi one last time. Doubtful, she thought. Kokomi had more pressing matters to contend with, like not getting injured on the battlefield.

Stupid, stupid, stupid. Sara had gotten distracted by a stray arrow, allowing a Resistance soldier to stab her in the side. Of course, she had ended their life after that little stunt, but the wound was a lot more serious than she thought. She had hastily called for a retreat before stumbling out of sight.

By now, Sara’s vision had started fading in and out. She heard someone call her name, accompanied by a blur of pink and blue.

Kokomi.

Are you real? Sara felt her lips move, but no sound came out. There was a cool sensation placed on her side, presumably Kokomi trying to heal her wound. “Sara, stay awake,” Kokomi pleaded. Sara slowly shook her head; she had lost too much blood, and no amount of healing could save her.

Brief fragments of memories passed through her mind: bowing low before the throne, stolen kisses under the moonlight, the blinding light of Divine Punishment, a soft hand in hers.

“I’m sorry,” Sara rasped. She didn’t know who she was apologizing to, the Shogun or Kokomi. Maybe in her next life, she would be more deserving of either.

With that, Sara’s eyes finally slipped closed and her breathing petered out. Kokomi thought she looked so much at peace, like the weight of an entire nation no longer resided on her shoulders. Well, I guess it now no longer does, she thought bitterly. Kokomi reached out to cup Sara’s cheeks, placing one final kiss on her already cooling lips.

Notes:

I don't know why I keep writing angst 💀💀 I try to avoid it at all costs when reading (this takes place after the battle at Nazuchi Beach if you couldn't tell)
