Chapter Text

“Guqqie,”

“Guqqie!”

“GUQQIE!”

Guqqie sat up straight in a flash, wide eyes darting around in panic. She heard a soft giggle from behind her and two soft hands set their place on her shoulders.

“You fell asleep already Guq? It’s only seven. The stars haven’t even come out yet.” Aimsey spoke teasingly, having now moved from behind Guqqie to sit beside them. Guqqie whipped their head to look at Aimsey. They could have sworn a second ago they were a bit cold but when they looked at Aimsey now smiling so brightly, they felt warm.

“You okay there? You look a bit startled.” Aimsey’s smile slipped from their face as they looked at Guqqie with concern. Guqqie started to feel a bit cold again when Aimsey looked at them like that. They missed the radiant smile that had just been.

“Yeah! Yeah, I’m alright Aims. I guess I was pretty deep asleep. You scared me a bit.” Guqqie rushed out, giggling softly.

Aimsey’s smile returned and Guqqie smiled back.

“Awww is little Guqqie a scaredy cat? Are they jumpy?” Aimsey reached down to ruffle a teasing hand through Guqqie’s hair. They giggled and swatted at him.

“I’m not a scaredy cat! I was just having a lovely dream that you ripped me away from!” Guqqie laughed as she spoke, still pushing away Aimsey’s hand.

“Oh? And what was this ‘lovely dream’ you were having about?” Aimsey still had a teasing tone in his voice. His eyes sparkled a bit, at least to Guqqie they did, as he looked at them with genuine curiosity shining through his sarcastic facade.

Guqqie stuttered.

They could have sworn before Aimsey had shook them awake that they were having a dream. But now they couldn’t remember it at all. Was the dream even that nice in the first place? Well they couldn’t remember that either. They had honestly just used that to rebuttal Aimsey.

“...I, I don’t remember.”

Aimsey stared at them curiously. Telling each other about dreams was something the two had become used to, it wasn’t often Guqqie didn’t remember a dream. Good or bad. Aimsey looked as if they were trying to study their judgment for a moment before slowly nodding.

“Well, when you do remember you can come tell me all about it!” Aimsey paused. “If you want to.”

“Of course I do! As soon as I remember it I’ll come tell you, I’m pretty sure it was a good one anyway.” Guqqie told them.

Aimsey looked a bit relieved. He smiled kindly at Guqqie.

Guqqie shared the same smile back.

Aimsey then tackled Guqqie over in a hug while laughing loudly. Guqqie yelped in surprise. It was only then that she remembered they were outside on a blanket. Their spot. The top of this big hill in the mushroom biome they found ages ago now. The first time they found it Guqqie insisted that the climb was too much, that there was a better smaller hill over to their right. That they could see the stars just fine closer to the ground. While they knew that wasn’t entirely true Guqqie really didn’t want to climb. But Aimsey was bouncing on their heels in excitement, taking Guqqie’s hands in theirs and begging for them to follow him up the hill.

Guqqie had spared one glance at the look in Aimsey’s eye and caved.

That hill had become their spot. Whenever they could they would take out a checkered blanket, some snacks, and climb up the big hill to gaze at the stars. Sometimes they would stay out late enough to watch the sunrise too before crashing.

“Helloooo?? Earth to Guqqie??” Aimsey was waving a hand in front of their face, both of them still laying on the blanket.

“Earth to Guqqie??” Guqqie didn’t really get what that meant. Aimsey‘s face flashed with realization, then she snorted to herself quietly.

“It’s an expression, I’ll explain it later. Basically just a way to get someone out of their head, to stop thinking so much. What’s going on in there?” Aimsey looked concerned again. Guqqie wasn’t sure why but that look felt a bit unsettling each time it showed up.

So Guqqie smiled at him kindly again, attempting to coax the regular look of excitement back.

“Nothing much honestly. Just happy. I love the stars.” Guqqie spoke fondly.

“Well then I’m happy too. I love the stars.” Aimsey spoke back in the same tone.

There was an unspoken between the two.

I love the stars because I’m looking at them with you.

Guqqie and Aimsey stayed out late that night. Not late enough to see the sunrise but late enough to where the stars were the only light left around them.

They laid on their backs side by side, their pinkies locked together. It was a small gesture but one that they both adored more than anything. It reminded them of when they first met.

Guqqie’s love language had always been physical touch. When they became close with Aimsey they were a bit nervous to initiate that. Aimsey was their first true friend in the BearSMP, they didn’t want to scare them away. It started with little pats on the shoulder and head, becoming more frequent as time went on. Aimsey could tell Guqqie liked physical affection. They were always lingering close to him but never dared to reach out. So one day Aimsey did it first. It was a small gesture but a kind one nonetheless. Aimsey had reached out while they were sitting together and wrapped his pinky finger around theirs, holding it there the entire time they talked. Guqqie had looked so flustered and content at the same time. Aimsey had difficulty suppressing his laughter but did so anyway, a bit nervous they would pull away if he did laugh.

Since then their physical touch had evolved the more they became comfortable with each other but it was always nice to go back to something simple. It was sweet.

“You’re looking at the stars like that again? ” Aimsey spat, shattering the sweet silence between them. They sounded annoyed. Their voice was cold and sharp.

Guqqie’s heart sunk as she slowly turned her head to look at Aimsey, almost afraid of what would happen if she did.

But Aimsey’s gaze was fond, looking back at her kindly.

“...what?” Guqqie swallowed harshly before speaking.

“You’re looking at the stars like that again.” Aimsey repeated himself. This time it sounded like he was stating a fact, not insulting her. His voice was warm and fond, though Guqqie could hear the small ounce of pity he was trying to hide.

Guqqie shuddered. That was strange.

“...yeah, I. I miss home.” Guqqie muttered, still thrown off by what she had (thought?) she heard.

Aimsey’s look twinged into something Guqqie couldn’t quite understand before settling back, a bit tenser than before. He hummed before turning back to the sky.

Guqqie looked back as well but their mind was racing. The tone in Aimsey’s voice that first time. It sounded so harsh. So fed up. So frustrated.

Guqqie spared a last glance back at Aimsey before shaking their head softly.

Must have been something of their imagination.

It seems to do that a lot recently anyway.
