The Game

Players ask each other a set of random questions. They can either answer the question or take a shot.

“Please introduce yourselves.”

Jungkook and Yoongi sit across from each other at a small, white table. A stack of question cards placed between them with two shot glasses and bottles of alcohol on the side. Jungkook introduces himself first.

“I’m Jeon Jungkook,” he says softly, grinning cutely at the camera.

Yoongi merely nods. “Suga.”

“Why did you both agree to do this?”

“I thought this was supposed to be an interview for my album,” Yoongi remarks, shooting a glare at something behind the camera.

Jungkook shrugs. “I wanted closure.”

Yoongi glimpses over at Jungkook then, a pained expression adorning his usually stoic face.

“How did you start dating?”

Jungkook and Yoongi both glance at each other awkwardly, seeming to have a silent conversation of who should answer. Yoongi coughs and looks away as Jungkook speaks up.

“Uh, we first met when Suga-hyung invited me to feature on ‘So Far Away.’ That was… around five years ago, I think? We were still only coworkers then, but when we worked on ‘Stay Alive’ together, we uh—” Jungkook starts scratching his neck as he stares down at the table. “We developed feelings while working with each other and then afterwards, you know, we… um yeah—”

Yoongi nods, agreeing with Jungkook's answer.

“And how long did you date?”

This time, Yoongi speaks up. “Two years.”

Jungkook adds in, “We confessed and started seeing each other shortly after ‘Stay Alive’ was released. As for our break up… as you know, that was made public a year ago.”

“Would you both say ‘Stay Alive’ is a song that is meaningful to you?”

“Of course,” Jungkook responds quickly. “I um, I realized I liked Yoongi-hyung while we recorded it together. It meant a lot to me. It still does.”

“It’s a song of many meanings,” Yoongi comments, glancing at Jungkook as he does.

“Okay, let’s begin! Please take turns asking each other the questions.”

Yoongi gestures to Jungkook to go first. Jungkook gingerly picks up a card, reading off its contents, “What’s the most annoying thing about me?”

Yoongi contemplates before answering.

“Your self-doubt,” he says. “It wasn’t annoying, but it hurt to see you put yourself down. I hated seeing you like that.”

“Ah… it’s something I’m still working on.”

“That’s good. I always thought you were too hard on yourself.”

“You reassured me a lot, though.”

“Somebody had to keep you in check,” Yoongi replies, making Jungkook giggle lightly.

“You were always good at that.”

Yoongi leans forward to pick up a card, then asks, “What do your friends and parents think of me?”

Jungkook taps his chin. “Eomma and Appa still ask about you. They miss you a lot, even after everything. Tae does too, kind of. Um… Jimin-hyung despises your guts.”

Yoongi lets out a raspy chuckle. “I’m not surprised—Jimin’s very protective of you. It’s good that you have a friend like him. He cares about you a lot.”

“You cared about me too, hyung.”

Yoongi looks away. “Not in the way you deserved.”

“Am I a better lover than who you’re currently with?” Jungkook asks.

“I’m not currently with anyone,” Yoongi says. “But if I was, I’d doubt it.” Then adds in: “Nobody compares to you.”

“…”

“Was that the answer you were hoping?”

“Yes. I mean— no..? Maybe?”

“If you could erase every memory of me, would you?” Yoongi frowns as he reads the question.

“Of course not,” Jungkook replies immediately. “You made me really happy. I never want to lose those memories.”

“…”

“Would you?”

“Sometimes I want to. But, no, I wouldn’t.”

Jungkook reads, “What’s my contact name in your phone?”

Yoongi takes his first glimpse at the alcohol on the side.

“Uh, it’s…” He begins rubbing the back of his neck, avoiding eye contact.

“Is it still..?” Jungkook asks innocently.

“...Yeah.”

“What is it?”

Yoongi begins carefully inspecting a loose thread on his pants, then murmurs softly.

“Little prince.”

Yoongi picks up the card before tsking. “Ah, this is…”

“What?” Jungkook asks, trying to sneak a glance at the card.

“It says, ‘I dare you to tell your best friend we got back together.’”

Jungkook looks taken aback, then: “I’ll do it.”

“Jungkook…”

The boy in question takes out his phone and types out a quick text. “It’ll be fine.”

“Uh-huh…”

Already, Jungkook phone begins ringing and he picks up promptly, voice timid, “H-hi, Jimin-hyung.”

Yoongi puts his head in his hands.

“Jeon Jungkook! What the hell?! You’re kidding right?” A furious Jimin’s voice explodes through the speaker.

Jungkook hesitantly looks up at the director, who urges him to continue. “Um… no?”

“You can’t be serious! When did this happen? That asshat literally broke your heart and you’re just—”

“Hey Jimin-ah,” Yoongi interrupts his tirade.

“You!” Jimin screeches, voice turning even more heated. “What the hell did you say to him? He hates you! I hate you!”

“Actually I don’t—”

Jesus Christ, Jimin, chill out. It’s just a dare for a game,” Yoongi calmly explains. “No need to worry about me stealing your boy away.”

“What do you mean ‘dare’? Kook said he was heading to an interview? What’s going on—”

“Okay, that’s enough! Bye hyung I love you I’ll explain later—”

“Jungkook, I swear to—”

The line cuts off. The studio fills with awkward silence.

Yoongi coughs. “Well he’s still as lovely as ever.”

Jungkook looks uneasy as he puts the card down. “Um, why did we break up?”

Yoongi mulls over the question, then reaches for a bottle of whiskey.

“Hyung…” Jungkook whines sadly.

“I told you why. The answer’s still the same.”

“I don’t believe that.”

“I think this isn’t a conversation to be continued on camera,” Yoongi replies sternly, then turns his head up and drowns the shot.

Jungkook drops and sags in his seat afterwards, looking dejected.

“When did you realize it was over?” Yoongi reads solemnly.

Jungkook plays with his fingers for a bit, and then answers. “When you left after breaking up with me.”

A whisper, “I’m sorry…”

Jungkook furrows his eyebrows. “You can’t— you can’t say that. Not now. That’s not fair.”

Yoongi’s voice turns soft then. “I know, Kook-ah. I know.”

Jungkook is quiet after picking up the card, as if he’s afraid to read it aloud. “What do you regret the most?” he whispers.

Yoongi ponders the question, playing with the loose thread on his pants. “Hurting you the way I did. I could’ve handled it a lot better.”

“I hated you for a long time after, you know.”

“I know,” Yoongi hums. “Do you still hate me now?”

Jungkook shakes his head. “Hating you hurt a lot more than I realized. Besides, even if I wanted to hate you, I can't bring myself to.”

Yoongi’s frown deepens at the confession.

“If you could do it over again, what would you do differently?”

A minute passes before Jungkook responds, “I should’ve noticed when things were getting hard for you. You always tried to bear everything on your own. I wish you had let me help you, even if I didn’t know how to.”

Yoongi leans forward in his chair. “I didn’t— I didn’t want you to worry about me.”

Jungkook looks at Yoongi with a stubborn expression. “And I didn’t want you to stress yourself to death. I let you take care of me, hyung. Is it so bad that I wanted to do the same?”

Yoongi looks down. “No. It’s not.”

“What do you think I should change about myself for my next relationship?”

“Nothing.” Yoongi’s answer is immediate.

“What?” Jungkook looks up, genuinely surprised.

“You’re perfect.”

“You don’t have to lie…”

“I’m not.”

“Then… then why wasn’t I good enough for you to stay?” Jungkook's eyes turn glassy.

Yoongi looks at Jungkook deeply. “It was never about you, Jungkook-ah. I promise.”

Jungkook sniffs. “That’s so fucking cliche.”

Yoongi reads, “How long did it take you to get over us and what did you do to help yourself get over it?”

Jungkook is silent for a while, then grabs a shot glass.

His face scrunches when he downs the bitter alcohol.

“Where do you see us in ten years?” Jungkook asks.

Yoongi traces his finger around the rim of the shot glass. He answers, then, voice quiet.

“I hope you’ve adopted the puppies you always wanted. I hope you finally have as many tattoos and piercings as you wish for. I hope you continue to make the art you love. I hope you’re happy and healthy and surrounded by those who love you.”

“And… what about you, hyung?”

“If I’m still in your life in ten years, I hope you’ve forgiven me by then.”

“What would it take for us to get back together?” Yoongi scowls at the card.

“I—”

“You can take a shot.”

“It’s fine—”

“I don’t want to hear the answer.”

“Okay…”

“Do you think I’ll be a good husband?”

“Without a doubt.”

“Really?”

“I wanted to— nevermind.”

“Hyung?”

“It doesn’t matter.”

They’re both slightly buzzed now, having drunk a couple sips between questions.

“Would you go out with me again?” Yoongi drawls.

Jungkook takes time to consider it. “After we both heal… I think I could.”

Yoongi drops his glass to look up, eyes wide in shock. “What? Are you serious?”

Jungkook nods once, resolutely. “You’re my soulmate.”

“Even after—”

“Yes, hyung. There’s no one else but you.”

“But—”

“I still don’t understand why you left. I keep running in circles blaming myself and blaming you. But I can’t deny that we were good together. When I lost you, I lost my best friend. You meant— you mean everything to me.”

Yoongi’s eyes begin to water. He covers his face with his hand before the camera cuts off.

Jungkook and Yoongi sit across from each other at a small, white table. A stack of question cards scattered between them with two shot glasses and bottles of alcohol littered atop. Their eyes are both rimmed red and their hands clasp together tenderly on the tabletop.

Jungkook picks up the last card. He scans it, swallows, then reads it aloud.

“Do you still love me?”

Yoongi answers with complete honesty.

“More than anything.”
