Chapter 1: A Whole New World (Without You In It).
Chapter Text
"We had no time to say goodbye... So let's not call it that."
The world was blurry landscapes, spinning stardust, and wind that blew storms. Night turned to day just as clear skies burned red with ashes. But in a blink, all of it was made clear skies once more as gentle spring birds sing and call upon those in deep slumber. It's time for a new age and gold is it's favorite color.
"Urgh..."
Aether groaned as he awoke; Eyes weary and throat parched. Trying to wipe away the remaining sleep from his eyes, he slowly and clumsily shifted himself to sit up and look at his surroundings. The sunken ground he's in the middle of was filled with dewy grass and spinning flowers(?) grew aplenty. Odd and curious little things they were.
"Lumine..."
The shade of the trees around him gave way to sunlight that felt warm on his skin. Much needed really, as for some reason his back felt awfully cold. Empty and vulnerable in a way that it had never been for in all of his time of existence. It was not a feeling he wished to dwell on at any case. There are more important things to focus on afterall.
"Wh-Where am I?"
A pause.
Bathed breath.
A painful gasp.
Realization struck.
"Wh... Where's Lumine..."
Awake like he hadn't been for who knows how long, Aether scrambled to stand up on numb legs and aching bones of a body stiff from sleep. Crawling out of the flowery crater, he tried to call upon the powers of the stars to aid him, but short of a few sparks and bursts of light fragments, it did nothing to replenish his energy nor did it show him the way... The way to his home... To his dearest sister... The way to Lumine. "Wha... W-Why?" Usually, doing so, it would be enough for his powers to immediately create glittering yellow stardust to mark his path to where he intend to go. Where he needs to be. What does this mean?
Why won't it lead him to her?
Is he unneeded?
No. No! NEVER! She would...
Lumine, s-she...
He inhaled sharply... Is Lumine... his dear sister... not here?
A world without his only kin. He can't even begin to imagine...
What would he do then? What WOULDN'T he do-
NO! He REFUSE to imagine!
She has to be okay! She HAS to be! In a fit of desperation and panic, Aether tried to push himself up to fly, only to come crashing down with the painful realization that his back was bare of his golden wings. Unbeknownst to him, he began to hyperventilate at the terrible thought of being bound alone in this world. What happened? H-How could this be-
"Lumi-"
"Outlanders, your journey ends HERE."
"Who are you?" Lumine?
"The Sustainer of Heavenly Principles. The arrogation of mankind ends NOW."
"LUMINE!!!"
A desperate cry and his little sister's familiar face looking at him with the ever dawning- terrifying- realization that she wouldn't be able to get away. Strong as she is, she didn't make it in time. Her hands are tied and it's too late. He was TOO LATE! Why wasn't he fast enough- STRONG enough to- At that moment, Aether can also recall the feeling of his precious wings breaking away into cubic pieces, but the pain of losing her was far greater than any other that he had ever felt before.
No greater loss, in battle or in life, would overshadow this from his memories. Too painful to remember, but too important to forget. Even if he can't recall all that he was before, there was no mistaking his sister... The one who he lost to that Unknown God- No. Due to his own weaknesses. It's because of him, she- Choking from the nightmare that is his current reality, the golden haired boy fell to his weary knees; Panting for air. He doesn't recognize the place he's in anymore, but then again he never expected to. The tears in his eyes blurred the scenery of green. Still he was able to note that it was far darker out than it had been when he arose. Seems time moves faster in this world. It's already nightfall.
Not knowing how far or how long he ran through the forest (nor caring at this point), he slowly went onwards until he reached a clearing. Heart heavy and mind a mess. All he really wants is his twin sister, but he couldn't sense her nearby either. Had the majority of his powers been sealed away so effectively? Just where could she be!? Wherever it is, just please be alright. Please be safe. He won't even think she's otherwise or else... Just... PLEASE... "Give my sister BACK!" A sob broke through his voice as he began repeating his pleas, incoherently. His form crumbling to the ground. Soft grass piercing through bare skin as the open sky above looked down on him. The stars felt like a thousand witness with no mouth to answer his queries. No words to comfort. Instead, their gaze felt like pity. They felt like judgement. He wants them gone, but Lumine had always been the one to stand up first and shoo away all that bothers them. He'd just been the one to defend...
Heh.
So much for that.
What good is my protection, when it hadn't been able to save her?
Unable to protect who was most important to him?
Aether gave a bitter laugh that felt mocking even to his ears as he turned to his back where he lay upon the grass. Facing the stars head on just like she would. For it dawned to him that he's on his own now... He hates it. Truly, he hates it SO, so much... He felt crippled without his wings nor his other half. He felt trapped. He felt abandoned... He had never been so lonely before. It's not fair! All they wanted was to explore! It was in their nature. Afterall, together, they were called-
"Viator... Where there is you, there is-"
"VIATRIX!"
Aether gasped as he immediately sat up to look at the night sky, properly this time. Remembering Lumine's vibrant voice as she called them fondly by name. Looking at the heavens above that he knew existed far beyond the clouds. Searching for a sign that she's alright. A proof that everything could still be okay if he could just FIND HER- There it is.
"Viatrix..." He breathed like it was his first. For reflected in his golden eyes were the just as mesmerizing twin stars that were told to have stayed together no matter which world they went. Their constellations. Similar in appearance. Both still side by side in the sky of an unfamiliar planet. Had their worlds been truly separated, her stars wouldn't be there now and yet, they shine so brightly still that Aether could almost collapse again in relief... For this could only mean... She's ALIVE.. and she's HERE!
And he WILL find her.
Even if he has to journey through the ends of this world, he would do it!
Afterall, there was a reason they were known best as... The Travelers.

The dandelion seeds blew all over the land. For despite thinking that no one heard his pleas, the winds of change brought whispers of a mysterious traveler who wept in woe by his lonesome for the Anemo Archon, Himself, to hear. Melodious is His voice, He spoke (Oh! How He spoke! Do well that you listen)...
"Windborne Outlander from Distant Lands,
Cry not for the Stars who won't show its hands.
For I know great loss and is bound to Thee.
Let not your Fate be like that of Me.
Take heart. I fear, this is only the Beginning;
For know that your Journey, Itself, has meaning.
Spread new wings and find new hope in Mine Kingdom.
May you make your way safely to the City of Freedom."
With the blessing-slash-invitation-to-a-haven sung and sent, the God-Bard hummed. Taking this as another hard day of work done. He knew not the full extent of His words, Himself, but- eh. He suppose when one gets inspiration, it must not be denied. But how curious this is, this new face... At such a time... and his aura...
Another batch of His winds roared pass His ears. A roar the Anemo Archon knew well once before. "Oh Dvalin..." He sighed as He moved away from the shade of a magnificent tree He took refuge under for a but a moment with His harp. Truly, His words spoke sincere. He knew loss and, ironically -for a God of Freedom no less- He knew how it is to feel bound... to responsibilities... to people... and unable to let go.
Now while this lonely traveler felt trapped in this... world? He, the Anemo Archon, felt trapped in His own skin for His own reasons. Still, He could only hope He helped in giving that poor soul peace and solace by deeming him welcome in Mondstat. A kind of peace He couldn't give Himself without a drink aplenty. But before He could check again, another roar reminded Him that there are bigger troubles ahead and dread as He does to do work of any kind, He knew that an old friend was in need and by the sound of it, He needs to hurry before He miss Dvalin again. For afterall, not just anyone could catch the songs of the breeze.

Unbeknownst to both God and Traveler, Destiny had bigger plans for Teyvat that no small blessing nor heavenly force could change. Now that every piece is in place, the story begins to unfold. A pixie would find herself in deep waters, the history of this world would be made anew, and it all begins with...
"The Outlander Who Caught The Wind."
Chapter 2: The Emergency Food Talks! (Pt.1)
Summary:
It's possible, bereft of his original powers as he is, that his vessel became that of a normal human's; with its mortal needs and cravings. With the energy within him sealed, he suppose all sorts of things could happen for him to experience on his own for the first time. Even with traveling for just a few days, he could already feel himself quick to tire. Though he never felt safe enough to stay and rest anywhere. Without his sister, he doesn't think he could EVER feel safe enough.

Chapter Text
Traveling through a new world had never been a problem for the twins. In fact, it's been more than a pleasure for them to do so. Discovering hidden places, meeting new people from all walks of life, and uncovering buried treasure are all things that they eagerly look forward to. They get to see all the beauty that these worlds have to offer as well as its darkness and its dangers. Surviving through their journey both raise their confidence in their strength, just as it humbles them to humanity's struggles.
The more they travel, the closer they become to these humans that endear them so. Though too close and the twins fear that they might never be able to leave. To this, they try their best to keep an open distance. Yet, still, they learned to care for them. To feel the need to protect the weak and defend what's right just as they get to acknowledge greed in all its forms. They get to experience what it's like to feel helpless, then empowered. Know how it is to be praised and scorned. Be entertained by material things like riches and property. All mere mortal pleasures, but their sway to the mind all the more powerful nonetheless... There even is, in fact, one such mortal-made concept they honed and enjoyed best called "cooking." Before, it had been nothing more than another learned skill. The taste is fleeting, but exciting. For all the combinations you could make with the same material could end up varying in results. It also helped that Aether and Lumine both have the knack for perfecting their first few tries at anything new. Though they never had the need for food, powerful as they were. To the twins, it was just a passing hobby.
Now though... Aether's stomach made a weird noise that he had never heard it make before. It was odd and uncomfortable, but he had seen something similar happen to a less than fortunate stranger once; he was sure. What was it called again? It's... "H-Hungry. I'm... hungry?" They described the feeling as something like that at the time, right? Is that what's going on? At a moment like this, he really do miss Lumine... Well, more so than usual. She might not know the answer as well, but then he'd still have someone to ask questions to. She woke up earlier before they were separated. Surely she'd know better than he does. Though, if she was here, maybe he wouldn't have felt this "hunger" at all.
They were supposed to watch each other's backs. Now, alone in this new world (he doesn't even know the name of), he's more vulnerable than ever. Who truly knows what unknown danger exist here? Just yesterday, he heard sounds of growling and chants like... "Mi muhe ye?" In any case, Aether made sure to steer clear of it as it's not a language he'd heard of before and it sounded quite hostile.
"Grrrrwwwllll."
Until... His stomach made itself known once more in loud protest.
How humiliating.
Maybe he should've approached them afterall? Who knows? It could simply be one of the locals here and they could be generous enough to share their camp food to a passing wanderer... Mmm. Maybe... But it's too late for that now. He already made a good distance away from those sounds and he's not going back when the goal to find his missing sister is in the forefront of his mind. It's his self-appointed mission and greatest motivation to go on. Still, he is feeling quite hungry and it's a bothersome distraction. Hmm. What were those survival tips he learned from a fellow nomad were again? At Rost's Hovel? The ones about hunting for food? Foraging? How to fetch a nice catch? They never quite stuck for more than an interesting story as he had no need for them then, but circumstances were different now...
Right! The sound of rushing water! They could lead to either a civilization or the ocean. But right now, what's most important is that it's a source of a proper meal. For where there's water, there MUST be fish! Easy prey when you know how to bait them right. Then again, there's the worry of the fishes being dangerous as well, but he figured he'd have a better chance at it than to go looking for a hunt on land. At least when they're on water, he could immediately run to safety whereas huge terrestrial creatures would give him no choice but to fight and he's nowhere near prepared. He goes forth without proper supplies or a suitable weapon other than a stick he picked up along the way to poke possibly dangerous flora. If the fishes do contain toxins of their own, Aether could still recall some ways to safely check and remove them. Hopefully, those culinary techniques could work in this new planet too. The water, itself, couldn't be poisonous if it contains living creatures, could it? At this point, anything is possible.
Augh! The paranoia is killing him! And there's the idea that this entire planet could just be made entirely of cliffs and forests as he'd seen so far, but surely Fate wouldn't be so cruel to him after everything he's been through? No-no! Aether slapped his cheeks with both hands. Shaking his head to be rid of the thought. He must stay optimistic! He'll see his sister soon and they'll find a way out of here for good! There's no use moping about his situation right now. There would be a time for that later. Lumine is counting on him and to get to her side again, he MUST survive. For that, he guess that food is now a necessity.
Either way, his mind was made up. He would move forward in one direction and hope for the best. He's gone to a clearing once. An open space vast enough to see the stars in its full glory. There's still hope for him yet that there's more to this world than meets the eye. Good things, if his fortune makes a turn for the better. Great things, if he imagines that his future is him by his sister. The only way to really know is to continue doing what they do best.
Aether travels onward.
_ _ _ _ _
It's been a few hours before true progress was seen from his journey. Well, by seen, he more or less meant 'heard'. Water... The sound of rushing water from a distance; Just as he had hoped for! Speeding up his pace, Aether couldn't help but feel excited like he hadn't been for a long while. Finally! He could get some food that isn't these strange and colorful berries he kept being tempted to pick, but fears they could be poisonous to the touch. (He have definitely seen some deadlier things in all his time of wandering and he has yet to determine the hostility of this place. Young Aloy's planet, in particular, had been memorably terrifying.) He was in such a rush to quench his thirst, that when he reached his destination, he didn't pause before cupping his hands to drink some of the water after seeing a frog leap into it unharmed. Even such small signs of success can lift spirits some, y'know? He definitely needed something to look forward to anyways and when he did look up to see the view, he had to take in a breath of awe at the sight before him.
Sunlight danced over the rippling water of the lake. The sky it reflect shines blue, though holds no candle to his hometown, still cheerful in its own way. The grass all around lush and healthy. A few flowers with the most alluring fragnance swayed at the side and birds flew swiftly overhead... Sigh. If only he had a bow. Maybe he could have had some roasted fowl instead? They look small and similar to some birds from another world he had been to. What a missed opportunity! Luckily, it seems his hunger isn't as persistent as he'd seen other humans' were when going without food for as long as he did. (Maybe due to his true nature?) Still, his stomach growled at the memory of a delicious poultry dish he made to please some royalty that one time. Oh, what he'd give to access a stove right about now.
Mmn. But if he's right, his stomach won't be growling for much longer; For peering pass the clear blue lake, he saw what appears to be brightly colored fishes. Small and unassuming. Swimming near the surface. Their vibrant tones intimidate him a bit as those are usually associated with nature's very own poisonous coating, but the water has yet to draw negative effects on his weakened vessel and the familiar appearance of the fishes were unmistakable. He's certain he knows a good way to cook some of those koi looking ones.
With the stick he carried along in one hand, he set about roaming the area for anything he could use as a makeshift rope for his fishing rod or else he would have to catch them by hand. Though he'd like to save that option for last. As Fate would have it, there was an abandoned white string nearby. It was long and sturdy too. What luck! It's as if it was just waiting for him to use it! Heh. A silly thought really. Maybe some poor fisherman just lost one of his strings? Well, now that he has it, might as well put it to good use.
Tying it securely on the wooden stick, Aether found a nice flat rock to sit on while he waits for his catch. Fishing is a game of patience afterall, but here's to hoping he won't be doing it for too long. Tossing the string expertly on the water with a bait on the end he made with smaller sticks and leaves, he made himself comfortable before stilling as to not startle his prey. The things one must do to eat, really. His respect for people who fish for a living grew while he occupied himself with remembering as much as he could of his past.
Of meeting fishermen and women, hunters of tribes, werewolf warriors, and sorcerers who studied their arts in solitude. Of worlds with technology so advanced as to be threatening, of glittering towers made out of glass, huge trees reaching wide enough to carry realms, and deities surrounded by warships. Of one deity in particular in all white. Evil and cruel in his mind. Of traveling with his sweet sister, only for her to be stripped away from him by that-
"UWAAAH!"
Lost as he was in his musings, Aether was harshly startled back into reality when something pulled at his fishing rod and went splashing about. Trying to keep his grip from slipping, he pulled with all his might. Reeling in his catch with the primitive tool was no easy task, but he felt motivated by its weight. A lucky first catch maybe? "This one feels too heavy. I didn't see anything that could have weighed like this in there? Was it deep underwater? Ah! If it's big enough, maybe I'd still have some leftovers after I cook it! Just have to put it in the bag as my emergency foo-" Thoughts of rations were interrupted by a squeal and tiny coughing.
Falling over from the struggle, Aether heard a snap and a wet thud hit the ground near him. Then high-pitched babbles spluttering words out that he couldn't even begin to decipher. He looked over to see this tiny white... thing speak so fast and so LOUD; He could barely get a word in! Though by the looks of it, he doubt he would be understood anyway. Does the thing even breathe? He hasn't seen it pause for a second! Despite the sheer amount of things the tiny being said, all he got was the word "Pie...mon(?)" on repeat. Still, he had to try. The thing was spinning itself into a starry white mess.
"P-Please? Slow... down? C-Can't- I can't understand! Sorry. What?"
Aether also moved his hands about to portray his confusion. Hoping that if words wouldn't get to it, then gestures could be universal. Surprisingly, this was enough to catch the kid-like being's attention. Finally, it paused for but a brief moment... before it slowly floated off the ground... and shook the water off itself! Aether ducked as the droplets sprayed the area. "Aw! Come ON!" And he was hoping to stay dry too! These clothes were all he had on him that's why he hadn't wanted to catch those fishes barehanded. If he knew this was gonna happen, he wouldn't have hesitated from the beginning-
"Hehe. Oops! Paimon hadn't meant to do that. Paimon just wanted to be dry!"
The Traveler paused as the words registered in his mind.
He... "He can understand it!"
"HEY! Paimon is NOT an IT! Paimon is a PAIMON! She. Not. It!"
Whoops. "Did he say that out loud?"
"Yes, you DID! And you're still doing it, you know!"
Aether winced. Making sure not to spill his thoughts this time, he watched the... the floating being move in the air as easy as breathing. The fact that it- uh, Paimon... The fact that this Paimon floats isn't all that surprising to him. What with this being a new world to him and all. (If Paimon was a talking animal, maybe. He can never quite get used to those.) Maybe people here are just tiny, thus, they developed the ability to float as they please in order to survive? Like monkeys with their tails? But she doesn't seem to have any wings like he did and there's also the fact that- "Y-You can... You can understand me too?"
Curiously, Paimon blinked at him as if he was being dumb on purpose. Her face appeared genuinely confused at the question. Tilting her head, she asked, "Was Paimon not supposed to?" In response, he shook his and tried to explain, "No. No! It's just... You were speaking in a completely different way earlier! I was just surprised. That's all... What language was that? And h-how do you know mine?" Aether watched Paimon brighten up with a smug grin as she placed her hands on her hips.
"Oh! Were you impressed with Paimon? Hehe. The first one Paimon spoke in just now was the common language of Teyvat! Though it's pretty weird for anyone to not know that! And the second one is..." At this, Paimon's smile slowly began to wilt as her eyes widened in surprised confusion. "Paimon... Paimon doesn't remember... Do... Do you know why Paimon can speak like you? Do you know where Paimon comes from?" Her voice started to sound frantic and her puppy eyes were becoming teary. Oh no! Not good! If Aether's experience with Lumine was anything to go by, he's absolutely terrible with little girls crying on him! (That is, he hates seeing it and would more than likely end up being putty in their hands just so he can get them to smile again.)
"P-Please don't be sad! I really don't know anything! I'm just a traveler, you see? I'm pretty new here, so I wouldn't know much either!" But this only made the floating girl pout more. He sighed, "Look... Do you know anyone? Even if you can't remember where you're from, having another name would give us something else to go by." To his dismay, she only shook her head and crossed her tiny arms all grumpily. "Oooh! Paimon doesn't get it! Paimon can't remember where she's from, but Paimon knows all SORTS of things about Teyvat! And yet Paimon doesn't feel like Paimon belongs with anyone here either!"
Somehow, he guessed that. Now that he's looking closely, the pattern on her clothes and the stardust around her all seem very familiar. Drawing up his fist between them, he let it open up with a burst of starlight. Making her glittering eyes shine even more from the display of what was only the small extent of his powers now. "Ah! Those look just like Paimon's!" So she got it too. "What does this mean? Does Paimon come from the same place as you? Will Paimon go with you now?" With that, he doesn't really know.
Things have just been unfolding too strangely. He woke up in this renewed world all alone. Then conveniently met this white haired being who reminds him of a certain deity that took his sister. His memories of some incidents were upturned like it was never supposed to be and this girl suffers a similar selective amnesia? Also, if Paimon can float, how did she nearly drown? Why was she even there in the first place? He asked the last bit out loud, but just as he had expected, she said that she couldn't remember how she got in the water. Only that she saw his bait and clung to safety.
So many questions and yet, so little answers. It's infuriating. Oh, why does he have the terrible feeling that this would be his norm now? Truly... "This world is full of unsolved mysteries." He pondered to himself. What else will he face on his own as he goes through his journey? And that's another thing that unsettled him still... HIS journey... It had always been theirs once... "What?" Paimon shot him a puzzled look and Aether had to get himself out of his stuppor. Not being able to immediately share his ideas with his sister must be getting to him more than he thought it would.
"It's... It's nothing. Never mind me." Back to the most important topic at hand. "In any case, I can't, in good conscience, leave a little girl with spotty memories out here on their own." At his words, Paimon's eyes began to sparkle as she floated higher in excitement. "Buuuut, I don't exactly know you... or anything from this place, really. See, how do I know you're not dangerous to me? For all we know, you could be a... a spy sent to check on unsuspecting travelers o-or... a pixie who pranks fishermen of being the Lady of the Lake!" He knows he's coming off too skeptical of everything, but with his separation from Lumine, he has no one else he could trust, thus the response to his situation felt called for.
"Wha! B-But! Paimon doesn't want to hurt anyone! Paimon's not a spy! And what the HECK even is a Prankster Lady doing in a Lake!? If anything, Paimon thinks YOU'RE the one who's weird here, mister."
"HEY! Come now. How can you be so sure? You can't remember much about yourself other than being Paimon, can you?" At this, Paimon's tiny air stomps faltered.
"Th-That's! That's true... But! But Paimon still remembers that she's a guide of some kind! That's why Paimon knows a whole lot about Teyvat! If you're really new, Paimon can help you find your way around. That way, Paimon can also repay you for saving Paimon!"
"You... do know how suspiciously convenient that all sounds like, right? Me being a traveler who has no idea where he is or where he's going and... a guide who just so HAPPENS to be drowning at the time that I was fishing."
"Ooh. When you put it like that..."
Aaaand we're back at a stalemate.
Still, it's not like he could think of a better option than this. He already knew what he was going to do the moment she stated that she couldn't remember much about herself. Afterall, what other way could get him some help that also allows him to keep an eye on this... Paimon without making him feel bad? Aether wouldn't exactly say he'd trust her completely now, but he could instead give her the benefit of the doubt at the very least. It's decided. The fact that he now knows she's a guide is just a bonus. Like he said, still super suspicious, but if his time of traveling taught him anything, is that in a new world, learning and adapting would be key to survival. There are strength in numbers. Taking risks could also lead to something truly exciting or dangerous. But in either case, it would be an adventure nonetheless. That and he might just go crazy with no one to talk to.
Though it doesn't mean he wouldn't keep her on her toes.
"Like I said, SUPER SUS... picious." He added.
"Hmm. But Paimon can't really think of anything to make you trust Paimon either. Can you?"
"Weeellll-" GRRRR~WWWLLLL!
Seriously? At a time like th- Another growl. Tinier this time, but somehow... longer? Wait. Was that...? Paimon bashfully scratched her head. Her tiny circlet bobbing about. "Ehe. Seems that hearing you be hungry makes Paimon's tummy hungry as well!"
"How does that even work?"
"Never mind that! All this who trust who and who's the weirdo talk is only making Paimon's stomach go all rumbly. We'll get back to that later. More importantly! Paimon heard you say something about fishing? Were you going to make a fish-based dish? Oooh! Paimon LOVES Fisherman's Toast! You should try making that! Though we don't have any toast or onions now that Paimon thinks about it... Hmm. And does Fisherman's Toast even have real fish?"
"What even is- Ugh. Whatever. I suppose I WOULD be roasting some fish right about now, y'know... If a certain little someone didn't snap the only rope I had with her weight."
"What? Oh..."
Looking dejectedly at the makeshift fishing rod on the ground, Aether sighed. There goes that idea. Feeling guilty, Paimon floated closer to- the guy whose name she doesn't even know. Huh... For someone who's so quick to distrust her, he hasn't really introduced himself in return. But then again, telling your name to someone you don't trust is probably not what she would go for in his position either. Oh well, his loss. She can just compromise! Hmm... Maybe a nickname? But it can't be ugly. She's actually trying to be nice here! Something straight forward. Easy to remember. Good and simple. Now, what was that he called himself earlier?... AHA!
"Paimon's really sorry about your rope. B-But don't worry! Paimon can just help you find another way to get food! Paimon would also do her best to be a great guide, just like we talked about earlier, and then you'll be able to trust Paimon for real! Just you wait, Traveler! We'll be the most bestiest friends in no time!"
"What was that?"
"Hm?"
"That... That name. What did you just call me?"
"Ah. You mean... Traveler? Hope you don't mind, but Paimon doesn't really know your name yet. Maybe if you tell Paimon?" To her surprise, this option only made the Traveler stammer out, "N-No! You can... You can keep calling me that... I don't mind. Just (he inhales)... Just call me Traveler."
Sheesh. She's met a strange one that's for sure. "Ooohkay then."
"... So... You were talking about helping me get food?"
"Uh, yup! You can trust, when it comes to cuisine, Paimon is the culinary connoisseur!"
Aether watched in amusement as the girl imitated what appears to be a stuck-up foreigner gourmet. Actually, despite his initial hesitation, he can't deny that Paimon's growing on him pretty quickly. It could also be because she's the only person he'd seen so far after being separated with his sister. Not like he had anything to compare this feeling of loneliness to when he never had to crave companionship around Lumine. Now this snarky little pixie is spinning about in the air as she continued her skit in front of him. Slowly, the hold of hopelessness began waning. No one would ever replace his twin sister, but it's a step at a purposeful direction... Yeah. He can just entertain this kid for now.
"Ok-ok! Somehow, even though we just met, I have the feeling that food really WOULD be your specialty... Well, food tasting in particular actually. Based on how you talk."
Paimon giggled, "See? Paimon KNEW you'd understand! Then, we can begin now?"
"Uh-huh. Though I don't really know how you'll help with fishing... As a floating... bait maybe? With that, I could just use a shorter rope and then say- Ploop! In you go, Paimon!"
"WHAT!? PAIMON'S NOT GOING TO BE BAIT! NO WAY! What Paimon meant was that she could just show you what plants we could eat instead and it'll be way easier than fishing! Plus, there's LOADS of delicious fruits and veggies in Teyvat's wilderness! Not that Paimon would be BAIT! How did you even get to that idea? Nevermind. Paimon doesn't wanna know."
"Right. Guide. You can actually tell me if something's poisonous... Or y'know. Poison me while you're at it... And now that I think about it, I suppose you would simply scare all the fish away rather than bait them anyway."
"Heeey! Paimon would NEVER! Traveler, stop being a big bully!"
"I'm kidding. I'm kidding! Sorry. You're just too fun to tease."
"Hmph!"
Notes:
Fun fact! The nomad Aether was talking about earlier was Aloy who lives with Rost at his Hovel from the game Horizon Zero Dawn. In this AU, you could say that he's been to their world before because I do what I want. =D
Note how obvious Fate makes it so these two meet, because when I saw the Travelers first meet Paimon, the coincidences weren't subtle at all. As we can see, they already knew how to fish before we met our favorite Emergency Food and even got a fishing rod from who knows where, so I hc that they also knew how to cook before then and were great at it. It's just that they need recipes for local specialties they've never heard of before! Making food from another planet are usually avoided because they would lack the necessary ingredients from said planet.
Also, there's a part 2 to this chapter cause it was getting kinda long. Mostly cause it deals with introduction while the next is more on world mechanics and how Aether reacts to them. As always, constructive critisism and requests are appreciated! No promises but I'll make thorough notes of them!
P.S. Notice that Aether actually said the word "SUS" cause we know his voice actor plays "Among Us?" That and I had the idea that the Travelers have been to worlds much like ours before so have known about otherwordly trends and slangs. Don't worry. I don't plan to nod to that idea again after this because Aether wouldn't want to isolate or accidentally offend his new friends who have their own culture and jokes, so wouldn't understand what's practically alien speak to them. He only subconciously did it with Paimon because she felt different the way he is. Lololol. My subtlety and humor is terrible. End me. XD
Chapter 3: The Emergency Food Talks! (Pt.2)
Summary:
Despite hearing Paimon fret, it was too late. Aether grabbed the sword by its hilt and expertly moved it about. Performing a twist with his wrist and throwing the blade high up into the air before catching it with his other hand... That felt good. Granted, he's not used to its weight and the balance wasn't as light and perfectly tailored to him as it did his original weapon, but for the time being... "I'll keep this close."

Chapter Text
It's been a few fast days since then and Paimon stayed true to her word about being the best guide she could be. With her help, he was able to get a more stable source of food with all the fruits and flora around them. In fact, Aether could say that the plants here were even better than he could hope for. Just one of those... S-Shoun... Soncitiyaz... Sunsiet...tias(?)... Those fruits on the trees over there, yeah, just one of those were enough to get him feeling energized even! It was great to have tasted them and having someone sate his curiosity was a blessing. He and his sister always have been the type to question anything and everything that piques their interest. Specially human affairs that they do not understand. Such complicated matters fascinate them. Though as Travelers, their curiosity were only natural.
Still, learning new words can be pretty difficult, but Paimon had also been helping him study the language of Tyieyvyatt... Theyvwat... Teeeyy... vhaaaat(?)... Teyvath(?)... TEYVAT(!) as he had requested; To prepare him in case they find a city and meet a local. He's been having some trouble with saying full sentences, but according to Paimon, he learns quicker than most. On the upside, he could now understand this world's common tongue in pieces. With a short stick, Paimon was even able to draw their numbers and alphabet on the ground for him to quickly memorize. At least that talent never left him even with the loss of his powers. It's just the speaking part that gets to him. That's why he agreed to let Paimon speak for him once they reach one of the Seven main kingdoms (which, according to his new guide, is ruled over by their respective deities); Making communication that much easier. So all in all, his new companion had been pretty useful so far.
"What a relief. I guess I won't have to cook Paimon afterall."
"HEY! Paimon thought we were over that!"
"Hm. Guess she'll just be emergency rations for now."
"Quit it! Listen to Paimon! Travellllleeerr!"
With a small laugh, Aether quickly ducked to avoid Paimon's midair kick. Other than the necessary stuff, he also learned that he quite enjoyed teasing his little companion. It's been a good distraction from his reality and a simple interaction he can pass the time with. In their inattention, while he was walking backwards, Aether bumped over something solid and large. His hands tried to balance him by flailing, but he still fell to his butt. "Oof!" Cutting their laughter short. "Traveler! Are you okay?" Paimon quickly flew over him to move his head from side to side with her tiny hands. Checking for injuries. "I-I'm fine." Honestly, what a worried little pixie. Though weakened, it's not like he would immediately sustain visible injuries from something like this. Usually, it would take a couple more throws and-
"What's that?"
"Huh?"
Paimon turned to where the Traveler pointed. While moving his head, behind Paimon, Aether was able to see what appears to be a random chest sitting innocently beneath his legs. Its wood damp and worn down by being exposed to the elements, but as it was left hidden inside a bush, the age was not as prominent as it probably should have been unprotected outdoors. A tiny gasp and a high pitched squeal suddenly rang by his ears. Then a fwhoosh before Paimon started hovering around the thing like an excitable child spotting a candy cart. "Is that? Is that really... OOH! Paimon's hooked like the fishies now! (Wait. No! No! Bad comparison.) It's... IT'S... TREASUUURE!" Treasure? He repeated his thoughts outloud.
"Yup! Though a common kind by the looks of it! They're found everywhere! But now we might even get some moraaa!" She answered with giddy reverence. The stars in her eyes twinkling with intensity. "Muwoh.. M-Moh... rah?" At his questioning tone, Paimon gave out the most exaggerated gasp he's ever heard in his lifetime. Suddenly, she flew close to his face and shook his head (cause she couldn't reach both his shoulders) back and forth with a frantic cry, "HOW CAN YOU NOT KNOW MORA!? Paimon can't BELIEVE you didn't know about it and yet here Paimon was! Teaching you all about letters when you don't even know MORA!? This won't do! Not at all! Not if Paimon has anything to say about it!" And so begins a long spiel about mora and minting that Aether fears listening to due to Paimon's sudden determination and insistance that he learn.
"And THAT'S why it cost that much mora to buy the sweetest and juiciest sunsetti- What the- HEY! Are you even listening?"
"Nope."
Paimon sputtered as she watched the Traveler open the chest without heed. Taking in his calculating gaze as he took a look at their find and mutter about added inventory. "So this mowwhraah... Simply put, it's a type of currency here, right? This one?" Bringing up a handful of gold coins certainly cooled Paimon's ire pretty quickly. It seems he now understand how she operates. Food and cash. "Ah, so you DID listen to some of it! Yes! Paimon can teach you more about how much it's worth later. What you have seems about 50. It's not much, but a bit more and it should get us a small snack at least! Also, like Paimon said, it's MORA! Not whatever it is you just called it! Don't disrespect mora like that! Ugh. We really have to practice more. You may have an accent."
Aether hummed as he scanned the rest of the loot. While Paimon was busy thinking up lesson plans, his eyes widened as something gleamed at the bottom of the container. On top of it was a map which he carefully moved aside to inspect later, but underneath... His breath caught as he pulled out a blade from the chest. It was dull, yet holding it feels like... like youthful dreams and the thrill of adventure were calling out to him. Finally! He found a weapon! Walking without one is yet another aspect that made him feel so exposed.
"What the- Wait! That looks sharp! Be careful!"
"I'll keep this close." He smiled to himself. Gathering the rest of the materials on the floor, he watched in amazement as the chest disappeared into thin air. But Paimon who had her sights on the chest like a hawk, didn't react to its disintegration. So Aether guessed that this is yet another normal eccentricity in this world that he'll just have to get used to. Though for some reason, Paimon looks peeved.
"Don't scare Paimon like that! Swords are veeery dangerous, y'know?"
"I know, but I also know how to properly wield one. See?"
"Well, Paimon saw that now! Still, warn Paimon next time!"
"Sorry! Sorry. I will. Don't worry."
She huffed at him and did her little stomps in the air before scratching her head. "Although, Paimon guess that you did look pretty cool earlier." She admits. "OOH! Paimon's got an idea! With your amazing sword skills and Paimon's brain juice, we could work together and find more ways to earn mora!" At the mention of more mora, Paimon began giggling to herself that it was actually kinda concerning, but he had to give credit where its due. "It's not a bad plan at all. Though we may have one problem."
"Problem? What is it?"
Aether pretended to sigh and be downridden. Putting his hand on his face, he said, "If we're going to depend on Paimon's... brain juice, we may not have a stable source of income afterall then." Just as he suspected, tiny fists began smacking his head. It didn't hurt much, but the humor lifted his heart a bit so he continued teasing her. It was only when he nearly dropped one of small pink ores that came with the loot in his arms did he stop to check their newly acquired supplies again... Good. All accounted for. Though he should really take a look at that map at some point.
Seeing him struggle with the stuff in his hands, Paimon took pity and stopped as well. "Those look a bit heavy. Do you need any help? Ooh! Paimon can hold the mora for you!" But Aether caught the greedy glint in her eyes as well as her twitching little grabby hands and thought better of it. "Mm. Probably not, but thanks for the offer. I think I have just the thing though." Laying the collected materials on the ground, Aether brought out one of the only proof of his old power that stayed with him. This time, the sudden appearance of the object startled Paimon enough to make her stumble in the air. "Wh-What is that!?"
Without turning from the task, Aether continued picking up the loot and placing them inside the bag in his hands. "Just my inventory. We- I... I travel quite often, so I keep it empty every time I go to a new... place... People often mistake it for a bag that can hold up to infinity, but there are limits to everything. This does too and in order to take more useful stuff in, I have to make some space. It just so happens that we- I... was in such a hurry to leave that I wasn't able to collect or prepare anything beforehand. Depending on how long this journey would last, my inventory's capacity might just be tested for the first time." He sighed as thoughts seem to filter through his mind. They have been to so many worlds and kept nothing but their memory as to not get too attached. Now here he was, indeed, keeping only painful memories of what he lost, yet even those were ripped to tiny shreds for him to slowly put together like a puzzle. While he would say that he had the skill for it, even experts would find puzzles to be frustrating at times and his situation is one such pain.
Paimon watched the Traveler separate his new things in a system that only he could understand and for once since meeting him, she was quiet. This was the most Paimon's ever gotten out of him about his past. Not that she pried. (Though not obvious, she can be considerate, y'know!) Paimon admits that it's truly idiotic to follow someone she just met as well. Specially one so secretive and adept with the sword. She's not blind. The way he confidently held the dull blade with such finesse could be seen by even those who know nothing of swordsmanship. But while all this makes him dangerous, his sudden silence, his stammer, and his walls speak of a history of abrupt and life-changing misfortune. His costume-like clothes, ignorance to the common language, and his ethereal features depict a stranger not from anywhere in Teyvat; But maybe because of this, to the Traveler, all around him is stranger still. He seems at a loss in every sense of the word and what is Paimon but a guide that wants to earn his trust?
"Okay. That should do it." Shaking herself out of her deep reverie, Paimon looked at the miraculous bag he held in his hands. Despite its new contents, the ba- the inventory didn't move out of its original shape nor did it trouble the Traveler with its combined weight unlike the materials he carried did earlier. "Wooow! They really went in there! As expected of a Traveler. You're really prepared!" She praised, aiming to lift the mood. Aether smiled. Her good intentions not lost to him.
"Why, thank you, Paimon. Though this is nothing, really."
"Still, it really is impressive how they all fit inside! Hmm. Paimon's curious..."
"Oh?"
Floating to hover in front of him again, Paimon opened the inventory and stuck her hand in it- only to be quickly sucked inside. "WOOOAH! It's waaay bigger in here than Paimon realized! And, huh, surprisingly cozy too!" There was a pause... before the small bag gave a shake and a white-haired head popped out of the opening. Somehow, Paimon was able to make herself look sly and bashful at the same time. "Say, Traveleeer, Paimon was getting kinda tired flying around. Can Paimon stay in here while you explore? When you need any help, just call and Paimon promises to come out!" The Traveler gave an amused grin at the adorable sight. The flap of the bag was resting on her crown and he had to wonder if she did it on purpose.
"Oh, I don't know. How can you be tired when you're just flying anyway?"
"Wha- You have no IDEA just how exhausting it is to float around and-"
"Aaaand are you sure you don't just find it comfortable because there's also those mowrah in there?" He is, as they say in another world, 'right on the money' for at his question, she swiftly backtracked. "Hehe. Mawraaah? Paimon doesn't know this mawrah you're talking about! Anyways, Paimon's just gonna stay in here for awhile with mora! See you later, Traveler!" And just like that, she was back in again. Only this time, he heard not her stardust, but the tell-tale clinking of coins go with her.
"Wait! Hey! Paimon, get back out here! PAIMON!"
But it was futile and in just a few seconds, he immediately realized how stupid he must look screaming inside his bag like that. (Yeah. He knows no one's watching, but it's still pretty embarrassing.) Huffing in defeat (and reluctant mild entertainment), he shuffled to close the bag and put it away, but... he was surprised to find it poof out of existence without his command. Only the newly familiar stardust stopped him from worrying. Somehow, he feels like this was Paimon's doing. Another anomaly to add to the list that is her existence. But checking in subconsciously, he found that she was already sound asleep while hugging a tiny pouch of mowrah to her person. Snoring away in slumber...
Wow. She really must be tired.
Not like he can disturb her about it now. It was a good thing he knew that living beings would be fine in there or else he may have to be more strict on her misbehavior and in keeping his things out of her eager reach. The inventory should immediately categorize her away from the sword so she shouldn't be in any danger any time soon. In the contrary, he may have just found the best shelter for her while he, on the other hand, will still have to brave out the weather of this world to protect them. That's one problem gone at least; Which will do him good for now. Every little progress is an additional experience afterall!
Speaking of moving forward, Aether rolled open the map that they found earlier. Learning the geology of this "Teyvat" is a certain must. It's a rule he, his sister, and any Traveler worth their name would follow in every planet they've ever ventured. Upon closer inspection, he was surprised to find that this world had waypoints planted practically everywhere! How convenient! Waypoints are like beacons to his teleportation power. In his current state, using those would grant him an easier time traveling to places he'd already been to before. He feared he'd have to go back and forth in his search by foot, but now it seems that fear is unfounded. Hmm. Counting him and Paimon, he should be able to carry along three or four others without exhausting himself. That's something to remember for later. It's a good thing that the map was so detailed. Once he reach one of said waypoints, he'll be able to gauge the accuracy of it too... As for the rest, just like what Paimon told him, there truly were seven main nations shown in the map, but he also discovered strange shapes drewn all over... Statues? Domains? Lines? Words he heard of before, but not used in such way... Is he perhaps not as fluent in this new alphabet as he thought he was? Strange...
Well, for now, the important thing is, he no longer have to wander without aim in this place. According to the map, the nearest settlement should be... M-Maundz... Mown... Eh. He'll get to know it later. Seeing that the sky is turning darker by the minute, he'll have to find a cave or a tree to sleep in for tonight. He's been at it nonstop for awhile, but Aether knows that he now has limitations that he didn't have before. Best to not test them so carelessly out in the wild. Then, he'll have to get some of those S-Sunsettyats too. Dinner should be soon.
_ _ _ _ _
The sun sets in the fiery horizon.
The pixie woke up to the smell of the campfire.
"Paimon slept like a baby boar!" She says.
All the while Aether served them their meal.
Paimon praised him excessively for it as he grew flattered. Granting her an extra serving.
Then with dinner done and leftovers preserved in the inventory, the two traveling companions spent the night to rest and ponder what they know as they now have the time. Aether had been specially surprised about Paimon's ability to get in and out of his bag on her own volition. Manifesting in front of him just as quickly as she can disappear in the air. Though while he knew of her having a power of her own right (what with her floating and all), it was still a curiosity to find out that she had the same teleportation magic as he does that allow him to travel to places they've already been to. Though hers are more leisurely used in a smaller scale. Apparently, she had no idea how she possessed or learned to utilize such ability (dissapointing, yet expected now at this point), but admit to using him as a type of anchor that could bring her back to wherever he is. Kind of like how waypoints work for him. Aether assumes that her powers would manifest more along their journey. Whether they work for his favor or not, well, all that is yet to be seen.
Speaking of getting to know each other, he suppose that he should've also returned the favor. Lying on the cave floor he chose to reside in for the night, Aether began to stew in his own thoughts. Paimon's been very good to him so far and he barely showed any of his cards! As much as he has his own reasons to be wary of her, he didn't really give her any reason to trust him either. Which, now that he think about it, is a pretty jerk move. Ugh... The guilt is eating him! Rolling to his side, Aether watched the fairy-like being sort their mowrah in to tiny towers whilst humming happily to herself. Despite his initial coldness towards her, she remained and he doesn't really know if he should feel relieved or worried about that. Once they get more comfortable as companions, maybe then he'll be able to teach her about 'stranger danger' and other-world survival tips in turn. Be her teacher just as she is his guide. An exchange of information in show of trust, if you will. Yes. He could recall some worlds who sought to use knowledge like currency or contracts of good faith. Right now, he still can't give out much but...
"Paimon..."
Noting the somber tone on the guy's voice, Paimon immediately paused. Her tiny hands kept still on the coins she was playing with like dolls. "Yes, Traveler?" She watched him exhale. Whatever he was about to say seems quite important for him to struggle with how to begin, so she turned her utmost attention towards him which he was grateful for as much as it wracked his nerves. This is it. This is going to be his first ever official introduction without the name 'Lumine' tacked next to his. It makes everything that happened feel all too real put out in the open like that. But he's not letting her go. No! This is just... Th-This is just a new challenge for him. Once he surpass this... he would then do his best to reel in his yearning and dedicate himself to his mission. After this... he would let himself be known, little by little. With the promise that when the time comes, his sister would be known along with him and later, he and she would be 'them' again. But first, he needed to start anew.
"Remember when you... when you first called me Traveler and I... I assume it's pretty obvious that it's... I have a different name." He began, lamely.
(Oh. So he wants to talk about that finally. He's opening up!) She nodded.
"I say, 'I', but what I really mean is... we." At the confusion on Paimon's face, the Traveler was quick to explain, "I had- I have a twin sister and... I-I lost her... I'm sorry I can't say how yet... The memory's too fresh of a wound, too painful, and the way it happened was... I can't. No. At least, not right now... But my name... Is... It's Aether. Just that... It's just... A-Aether." Despite all the stammering and the face he made that all but screams ready-to-cry, Travele- No- Aether also looked determined to see this through. Though in the end, the way he said his name somehow spoke of resigned loneliness. His sister was clearly very dear to him and Paimon felt a pang of sadness at the thought of losing anyone. What could she even say to that?
Sorry for his loss? Thank you for sharing? This whole situation is putting a pit in Paimon's tummy and she doesn't know what to do about it! In the end, she didn't have to say anything at all. All he wanted was someone there who could listen. At least she's still here... She's still here. "B-But!" Paimon looked up to where Tra- Aether spoke again. This time, he breathed in to regain his courage. Composing himself with the same determination that Paimon saw standing still and unwavering in his eyes. "I know she's still out there. O-Out here! In Teyvat! I just have to find her... S-So..." This time, he nearly slipped up again. The words on his tongue, but a humble request, yet to him, it weighs the world. "Please, if you don't mind, I-I want you to keep calling me Traveler."
"Eh?" At the surprise Paimon voiced, Aether sat up to run a hand through his hair. Feeling nervous when he really shouldn't be. It's just a name. That's true, but also... Also it's... It's not just any name. "Traveler... It's actually a title me and my sister shared for eons. Given to us by the stars. If I could have this... If I could have it with me wherever I go... Then I won't have to hear my name on its own and I could say that..." Ae- No. Traveler(?) placed a hand on his chest. Casting a longing gaze on said hand. He whispered to the night. The words heard only by two. So quiet that not even Celestia may listen in, but they were real and they were pure... "I'd say, that in my heart of hearts, even while we're apart and though in name alone, my sister still travels with me."
There is an unprecedented strength glowing and growing from within him as well as conviction in his mind.
Paimon could see it clear as day.
This Traveler could be something great... and she wants to see him reach it.
Now how can Paimon ever say no to that?
So she agreed.
With the dying embers of the campfire, sleep slowly called to the boy who's fears wouldn't lay to rest and made it so that he too would not. For the first time in likely a long, long while, Aether felt a semblance of peace derived from his honesty. Enough that his exhaustion finally caught up to him in the form of a defenseless yawn. Still, he had to say...
"I know it's kinda late, but... I'm glad to have met you, Paimon."
Both couldn't help but share wide smiles at that.
One that slowly, but surely lifted the veils of distrust between them.
As his eyes shut to slumber, Paimon extinguished the flames completely.
Finding herself self-appointed and duty bound to stand guard for the night.
But she's not complaining.
She had her rest and he, out of anyone, seem to need his.
For there are more ground to traverse come yonder.
So Paimon bid, "Good night... and it was nice to meet you too, dear Traveler."
Thus marked the symbolic birth of the Traveler and Paimon duo we know today.
In the months after, Aether would find the courage to tell her his story of loss in full at a beachside by the cliffs and they would venture out to a whole new world of secrets and dangers. Gods and mythical beings. Troubled knights and sly diplomats. Two months into the future he would create a new pseudonym for the locals he would meet and ask for a name. As none of those strangers would likely come as close to him as Paimon's bond did at that time. By then, he would often call her Emergency Food to her ire. (In his head, he would call her his best friend to which was mutual.) But for all the titles of honor and alias he gained as a result of his never ending helpful streak and bouts of bravery, some things about him remain constant to its core.
The winds scatter songs of a golden boy. The land tremble from each heroic deed. He comes and goes like lightning, as nature who witnessed tell tales for the future to read. His fate flows like water, matching his floating friend's words in speed. While news of his influence spread as wildfire. His burning ambition one you'd have to witness to believe. The Traveler's cool tenacity, sharper than ice, on his goal only lead. Not even the Tsaritsa would be able to make him heed. For in the deep Abyss of his heart he long freed, his sister to be found and Destiny be reweaved.
Notes:
I love Paimon. She's family! ^v^
And since no one was writing the tropes I like, seems I have to them myself.
Did anyone notice everyone but the twins and Dainsleif called the Traveler by their (Y/N) names in game? I just thought I could give some lore to that and Paimon didn't even look surprised by the name change. Just shocked on the "evil twin" trope revelation. I reminded you all that Aether and Lumine are also called Viator and Viatrix in the beginning, because I wanted to emphasize that "Traveler" canonically refers to the both of them and not one over the other. So it wouldn't be hard to believe that our chosen MC chose that title to honor the both of them as they share the name with their beloved sibling. It's sweet!
Also, Aether kept referencing other worlds because I wanted to introduce him as an outsider who hasn't integrated himself to his new environment yet. Soon enough, he'll be thinking of all the things he learned from the friends he met here in Teyvat along the way. I just wish you can all still watch it unfold with me!
This has been quite long and more on the Aether and Paimon-centric side, but I hope you had a good read nonetheless though I aimed to make you think. Hopefully, next time, my writing would be shorter. Sorry for the long wait. School is... schoolish. (TvT)
Chapter 4: Wangshu come Inn? (Pt.1)
Summary:
The Traveler was an oddity that doesn't even bother to conceal it. Now oddity alone wouldn't have garnered a pinch of his attention as Xiao, as stated, had seen his fair share of misfits. Yet, one had never excluded so much golden purity as this one. Not in terms of innocence. No. There is a familiar and undeniable scent of danger lurking behind this misleading young face and tortured old soul. But in terms of purification so powerful, it baffles him.

Chapter Text
Travelers... were nothing new to Alatus.
After living for as long as he did, with karmic debt weighing his shoulders, it's no surprise that in his avoidance of humans most vulnerable to malice, he would come across plenty souls of wander who thread where few dare to seek. He suppose he could even be akin to them once. Had the word "kin" not brought suffering to those he referred to as such. Well accustomed was he to their ways that it matters no longer to him, if it ever did, should they choose to stay shortly and leave him be just as quickly. In fact, Xiao preferred it that way as they seem to share this sentiment. In all his years at Wangshu Inn, the nomadic mortals that would inevitably find their way in the settlement between Mondstat and Liyue would often flee with just a hint of his presence. No doubt feeling the corruption that binds him.
Thus, in response- unless they prove themselves a threat- Xiao, too, would pay no notice to their little lives. Content as one can be in fulfilling his contractual duty within chaotic peace unique to him for as long as they stay out of his way. So truly, one could say that he had seen it all. Pretty faces, handsome faces, weary ones, and those dreary. No traveler could faze him anymore... No traveler yet, until... There was but the one.
One who, when he first saw- no- felt greatly the presence of instead of the other way around, had been an irresistable shinning beacon traversing the expanse of this Lord's blessed land. Walking amongst prowling monsters with confident ease. Daring them to see, to come near, and to speak. (Oh, why does it feel once you start with he, you would spill it all?) Not unlike his own aura, this eccentric stranger had, that attracts danger to his person. Yet still not like his own suffocating aura that oozes darkness from every pore. Once Xiao did come near the source, all there was to see was light... A blinding starry light.
Do note that Xiao means this in no poetic sense, for words elude him in his self-solitude. This man... The boy... Purification that could only be won from hundreds of years of reliving a horrid nightmare over and over. Still, to emerge remaining uncowed. Holy despite a fall. For the former, Xiao can still relate. For the latter, shamely, he can not. Silently inching close from the shadows where he lay, the Traveler's presence alone was enough to make notable lightness never before achieved against his karma. Even more, not so quickly!
It was as if the blonde wanderer was the wind that blew away bad omens. It was as if he was the holy water that cleanses this fertile land. It was as if he, the newly arrived Traveler currently gaping curious and awed at everything Liyue as the Boss of the Inn try and fail to place him, had no idea of the sheer magnitude of his pure energy. Neither Yin nor Yang, but a half of something nonetheless, it feels like. Now, what that is, Xiao hadn't bothered to care for. All that drew him in was the ray of light that allowed him to breathe for just a moment after eons of knowing nothing but suffering... Of course, before the Traveler moved on for the main city. Like most of those who would hail from the land of Mond, at this time, as a tourist. They would flock like puny moths to a candle flame at the grandest display known as the Rite of Descension. Eager to show their rightful reverence to the Prime of the Adepti in exchange for the abundance of equally revered economic wisdom He would bring.
Though with what meager pieces he knew of the Traveler, he seemed to care very little for worship. Rather for pure intent of meeting and questions for the sake of questioning. Coming and going as he pleased. Discovering every hidden nook and cranny to the point that even Xiao was running out of places to seclude himself. (Honestly, this outlander had to be the only one who could tresspass as he wish, like he owns the place, without at all hinting that he had just committed an invasion. His person was just that reassuring.)
All that for the sake of curiosity and an unspoken purpose. A self-appointed quest maybe. Had it been anything more than non-malicious ideals, this lowly adeptus would not have let him roam as he pleased so easily. The boy was a threatening, crouching beast. In this, he was sure. But not really a threat. Not yet. Thus, Xiao would be much the same in courtesy and good faith. One he was understandably not known for to have plenty of. (Yet as he watched the braided Traveler go off his merry way along with the white puffball thing that acts as his voice, Xiao reaffirms that him being "odd" remains true... This Traveler... went about squirreling away random unnoticable goods from the Inn when he thought no one was looking. Like a wee weasel thief, he quietly hoarded. Curious things. Small things. Utterly useless things that could be replaced come morrow. Therefore, Xiao never intervined. But still, it was a tad bit strange of the debatable human.)
And then, that was it.
Xiao believed that would be the last he'd see of the comforting stranger who unknowingly gave him a taste of true peace in their brief encounter. (If one could call it that.) Yet, he would not go searching for this short relief, as a Yaksha devoted to slaughter is unworthy of reprieve. He would not be so cruel as to force his tainted person in their life as life is cruel in and of its own. (Xiao would know.) Nor would he burden them with the responsibility of thawing his self-accumulated shell of corruption. It's but his own price to pay.
But Destiny is a certain word often likened to a female dog, for it's less than endearing antics... And Xiao was sorely tempted to agree. After all, when had anything gone the way he desired it to? For not even a few days after the most rumored Descension yet, the golden clad Traveler had returned to Bishui Plain seeking for his audience, specifically. Of course, the adeptus was less than courteous. Meaning to swiftly return to his life of obligations and isolation. But, he did not account for the absolute gall of these outlanders with their bribery and loud, sparkly floating companions. To ambush armed with nothing but an ancient sigil and a suspicious lead as they did. Daring to surprise him with one of the most scrumptuous meals of his life, only to surprise him as well with the sudden news of his Lord and Savior's passing. While he was in the middle of chewing, no less! (How degrading to nearly follow Rex Lapis to Celestia for choking on Almond tofu. He'd never be able to face Him.)
Why had they not started with that!?
Xiao then felt the sweetness on his tongue quickly rot bitter.
A suspect of the God of Geo's killer stood before him and he would have been furious, at these two and at himself, for letting the Traveler walk free earlier before, where he not certain of their innocence and lack of fault. He already concluded their pure intent.
Thinking back to the analogy of moths and flames, in which visitors of the annually hailed Rite were drawn in by horror when they slowly realized how quickly the candle of events tipped over to start an untamable wildfire that turned glaze lilies into the ashes in his mouth. The audacious words of treason can not be contained. Sullying his late Lord's abandoned name. Assassination, they say! The citizens of Liyue approached the light in hopeful glee, only to end up screaming out... burning. Mercilessly, this fire spreads in their hearts. Not to reveal a comforting warmth, but to be a wake-up call to this new godless version of hell they reside in. Wildfire that now rages fervently in the Conqueror of Demon's blackened soul.
"What chaos did this divine loss bring?"
A morbid side of his erosion, he refuses to acknowledge, wondered.
"What tragedy for his once glorious King?"
A bigger, vengeful, and sorrowful part of him pitifully woed.
"How could this be..." Denial won even swifter.
But, improbabilities still could be.
Oh, when will he learn?
He've done this for so long...
All for...
But He is...
A Liyue without...
But there is no denying DEATH.
Not for him.
Never for him.
When has he ever been lucky? This tentative, chaotic peace of his was a delusion that was never destined to last for as long as it surprisingly did. He should have known. He shouldn't have let his guard down. Worn by the repetitive routine of spilled blood, and now... Lost as he was to his thoughts, Xiao's feet fled by wild winds soon after the Traveler concluded their message. Then, once more, he who goes by that strange alias, not local bred, slipped out of Xiao's mind. What with the pressing matters of convening with the other (stuck-up and) secluded adepti. What with the posturing and useless arguments against the mortal (arrogant) Qixing. What with the looming dangers behind the depths of curtain calls.
There was much to do and the tides were changing.
No...
They were raging back.
Honestly, Xiao didn't know if he had it in him to be surprised yet again- for such a short amount of time in between -to meet the Traveler (oddly emitting a strong trace of hydro and electro from his person where there were once only anemo and a faint wisp of geo) and his little guide while facing Osial of all things (who suspiciously woke up at the worst of times, mind you). Clearly, well aquainted with those powerful figures around him. Unbothered by the fact, Xiao was somehow certain, of how minimal of a time he had in getting to know them. Yet, there they were, standing side by side, to face a fight long buried under the ocean of rocks where it should have stayed in eternal slumber. Faith in each other's blade and eyes on each other's backs as if they had done this dance for centuries. For there was no mistaking; This one is skilled.
Xiao was not eager to thrust upon a fleeting stranger to the midst of battle, but it seems he was not the only one who felt inclined to trust the Traveler so readily. Not the only one to feel that passive purifying energy. That magnetic essence of something lurking within its core. Much bigger than what the Fates have inclined for you... Pulling you in to just believe... Then, things would come to play as they should be on the board... A board connected by strings and called to by murder... Enticing is the feeling to submit to higher powers like he of Gold- Xiao frowned at these intrusive ideas. Like that of an Omniscience derailing the mind that struggles to defy. As they, themselves, know of the golden one's ability to bend the world around him by his will. Somehow, Xiao feels like he's drowning. Everything muffled. Dulled. Pondering why, so suddenly, thinking of others getting a whiff of the Traveler's oddity irked him a bit. A protective streak in him urging to offer. (To kill by a summon of his name.) Loyalty once only given to his late Lord. To pledge to a stranger he knew no more than a day. Question what keeps him from questioning when the other always go asking. Why thoughts just come spilling as answers do in this guy's presence.
Why he wish to join the party...
Give him fragments of my memory as he go...
To fill up constellations-
Xiao shook his head in alarm. A ridiculous notion. An otherwordly desire. All not his own... Quietly, he glanced across the platform to the Traveler, who he was surprised to find already looking his way despite the onslaught of those dishonorable Fatuus. He watched him tilt his head in question. Briefly inquiring about Xiao's troubled look, but he dare not speak lest he be willed to lose composure and ask, in the middle of a fight, why it is those golden eyes seem to be studying him so intensely. Just as it did to a certain few around them.
Now that he noticed, earlier, the Traveler seemed to be more inclined to listen to all those who had visions. Eyes unconsciously glittering with whatever words he would be given and soaking it up as if they were fruits of knowledge, a particularly entertaining debate, and not simple dialogues. Xiao thought he might just be interested in the workings of the glass orbs provided by the archons as he, despite elemental power, had none of his own or he was just being observant as the Traveler doesn't seem to talk as much. (Even less than Xiao does.) But- A moment of distraction. A hammer swung down to almost hit him. Focus. Focus!
He can not afford to be this distracted! To let his guard down. Not again. And just like that, Xiao's mind immediately returned to the heat of the battle. Slamming his spear and leaving corpses on his wake. The wind and rain a cold reminder of the wicked god before them. A distraction still, woven by the hands of Fate against all those who come close to the Truth before the Time was right. Not yet... Not yet...
And just like that, it resets. Now, all Xiao would recall to wonder about the all-unknowing Traveler at that time is of his endurance and promising marvel. Wherein at the height of their desperation, a noble sacrifice was made from where it was least expected to come from. Most unbelievable still is while in the throes of battle, Madam Ping, Ganyu, and Xiao (who had each been protecting one of the three ballistas), saw the Traveler weave between them and take in each of their powers, benevolent or miasma-borne, without a hint of exertion or strain. Taking to it like a fish to water. Absorbing more and more like an endless void. Had it been anyone else, with one adepti gift alone at that magnitude, would have gained nothing but irreversable effects on their body. The speed and intensity too much for any mortal to handle. The promise of blood, regardless of its source, too tempting. Even for those chosen to bask beneath Celestia's gaze. It's highly fatal and possibly life changing... for the worst.
Yet, he breathed it all in like air.
Combining each blessing to cut down all those who stood in his way. Carving a war path unlike anything Xiao has ever seen since the fall of the other Yakshas that led to the same savagery. Finishing off with a devastating blow to the Jade Chamber... And after all that, still, he didn't seem like he was even a bit out of breath. The only time he showed weakness during the whole ordeal was when he lost his footing and the platform broke. Xiao didn't even think twice before rushing to catch the Traveler in his arms. Warm skin, yet cold from the harsh weather. Shivering, but not freezing. Shock evident from his wide eyes and weak knees. As if something happened that he hadn't expected. As if he didn't think he could fall.
Xiao was used to watching. He saw how the Traveler reached for the sky. He saw the flash of disappointment. Like he thought he would fly. Though, that revelation, too, was quickly pushed back to the farthest reaches of Xiao's mind. In the end, the sword that had been anything but dull, that then pulsed gold with immense power, still clutched tightly in the Traveler's hands, revealed nothing. As they watched the sun rise and Osial sink deep along with the life's work of a solemn Qixing. It was a new day...
A new perspective to consider...
A new beginning for Liyue...
The end of a Contract...
An end to an Era...
An End to He...
And to His place amongst The Seven...
But He... "This Humbled One's Loyal General... Alatus..."
Later spoke a mighty Dragon in his nightmare turned dreams and Xiao, insignificant pheasant that he was in comparison to the presence that then pleasantly greeted him, couldn't help the rare rise to the corner of his lips as he thought, "Drastic changes were nothing new to me... But maybe not everything new that goes my way hails to be a bad thing, not every end means loss, and maybe- just maybe- this time... fortune smiles at me like prized jade as it does to all the learned subjects of Commerce... Knowing now that despite absence, true to an oath carved in stone, His Greatness had not abandoned us."
He has not abandoned me.
Notes:
HEEEEYYYY! So I updated! =D ACK! Wait! No! Put down those tomatoes and stop throwing them at me for just one second! AH! I know it's been awhile, but I honestly struggled really badly with this one. (TvT) Can you believe I'm not actually a major Xiao fan? I mean I've done all his quests and events and I like him enough, but not to the point of "staring at his pictures all day and imagine different AUs for him with every song I hear" kind of fan, so I found it real difficult to get into his mindset while writing this. Still, I persevered because I decided it must absolutely be this resident edgelord for this part of the fanfic! I've tried my best, so I hope you all still enjoy this! The one after is actually the part two of this, but it got too long, so whoops. Bonus chapter for you guys then! LMAO.
Chapter 5: Komore'n my Teahouse! (Pt.2)
Summary:
The only excitement still in circulation were news of the outside world. So far and so fantastical to Inazuman ears, it may as well be myth and so Thoma had dismissed it as such. Until, of course, his Lady had shaken him by the shoulders with barely suppressed glee in her eyes and renewed hope in her words of treason.

Chapter Text
Thoma is a very friendly guy.
Friendly in a way that's completely right at home in Mondstat. Where it's citizens were so tight-knit as to know each other by name. But such a cheerful and carefree attitude doesn't fly as well in Inazuma. With their propriety and their heirarchy that's never been as strictly imployed in the Land of Freedom. So friendly was he, in fact, that Inazumans can't help but be wary of him. Well, with the war afoot, Thoma honestly couldn't blame them.
Afterall, like the true Mondstater he still is deep inside, he tends to keep his darkest secrets in the brightest of smiles and the most flattering songs of praise. Nothing comes for free outside of the nation that claims it and kindness right here, nowadays, usually mean later debt. Err, does that make me a debt collector? What an awful thought. Thoma hummed to himself as he placed the last box of "goods" on the small boat. Though calling it that was just him being generous. It's more like a raft, really.
Still, with the Tenryou Commission's vigilance in full alert, they can't afford any more suspicion. Specially with their household already under fire as it is, from the other two Commissions. Thus, dignity for unhindered passage seemed like a pretty fair exchange to Thoma. He just hopes that the boat floats long enough to safely reach the small island behind the Kamisato Estate. In order to fulfill their bargain, the young fugitive silently hidden beneath the pile of "supplies" must make it to where the Alcor was anchored. Not that he doubts Captain Beidou, of course! I mean, if someone like me could survive being thrown overboard, surely... Ah, best not to jinx it, Thoma. Turning to approach the lone figure overviewing the stacking of boxes under the cover of the Inazuman night, Thoma greets the formidable woman with practiced warmth. "All the goods are ready to go and in shipshape condition as promised, Cap'n!" He beamed. Seemingly at ease while at the presence of said pirate and two of her trusty -no doubt also deadly- mercenaries.
With a nod as to permit her men to start working on securing the boxes with ropes, Beidou moved over to talk to their "supplier" before departure. Afterall, with the tall order that was given by that Clan head, who knows when they'll see each other again? "Ah, Thoma, indeed! Give your masters many thanks again for all the help with the, uh, goods... With the wild tempest spreading throughout all of Inazuma, the Crew and I would've been in deep waters long before we reached the next shore to restock. Tsk. Between you and me, any more black-back bass for dinner and I might just grow fish scales myself."
Quick to give a good natured laugh, Thoma easily slipped to vague and heavily editted responses befitting of the Shuumatsuban. (Maybe even the Resistance. Though any more similarities and he'll be condemned-) Understading that speaking of some matters out in the open can be damning, yet also aware of how speaking too little can give away just as much. There is guilty conscience in silence and all. No matter how secluded, it never hurts to be extra cautious in case any ears were pressed to the ground. Which there almost always were when outsiders are concerned. Well, he suppose, if there was anything at all he'd be called remotely good at, it's small talk and shmoozery.
"Of course! Of course! It was our pleasure, really. It's been quite awhile since we've received any visitors of esteem such as yourself. Ah! Though it's always an honor to host humble ceremonies and welcome guests, we only wish good meetings and safe partings in the end."
"Pah! Then you can consider us well met! I've known few greater hospitality than yours and with these provisions, you can be at ease knowing me lads will reach the land of Jade in good time. So chin up! Who knows? Maybe the sky will be clear tomorrow for Inazuma."
"Sigh. That is the dream, Captain. I do miss serving guests."
Looking forlorn as a lowly servant of his station should after that statement, Thoma hides the hope burning brightly in his heart. To anyone else listening in on this conversation, this is no more than a troubled young man worn by the war that hangs over their country. Serving a high and near untouchable family who miss the entertainment of entertaining foreigners in return. Same old, same old. It's a feeling that everyone who resides beneath the flash of lightning has grown accustomed to. Though they would remain alert against the sailors, if they were to leave before the light can return to get a glimpse of their faces and leave not as well a single trace on the undisturbed sand, were they ever truly there? If a tree falls in the middle of Sumeru with no one around to hear it, did it ever truly exist? After serving the Kamisatos for as long as he did, Thoma learned how to be discreet. Power belongs to those who have the evidence to back it up and his Lord made it so that proof would long be gone with the wind. Wind that not even the "Cyclone" could grasp.
Yet to the pyro vision bearer, all remains clear. Beidou had just affirmed her intentions as promised to the Clan. They'll take on the seas and reach Liyue with Mr. Kaedehara in tow. Bounty be damned. After that, the trade... Now, Thoma had to steady himself for a second with this one... Amidst the casual formalities, a promise was made of clear skies in the horizon. A promise of an end to what once was an eternal stagnation. A promise of a golden star yet to rise to bring about a new dawn. For a tomorrow free from war. For a tomorrow free to dream. For ambitions. Thoma couldn't believe it.
Afraid... Still so very afraid to believe it.
But the Lady had urged him to believe. Demanded he dare to dream and how could he refuse? Not when even the storms couldn't drown out the songs of a gallant knight. One who saved his old homeland from a woeful dragon. Not when, not long after that, rumors grew and spread of a wandering hero who performed small deeds for any in need. For any at all, he would encounter in his journey. When stories of the Rite's tragedy were overwritten by a champion who laid an ancient god to slumber beneath stone spears once more. The same stone spears the Kamisatos quickly hired the Crux Fleet to search for this supposed hero as soon as Thoma, himself, first brought up these market rumors to the household.
Whispers of passerbys who were forced to remain in this unchanging nation. So much vigor it worries him of disappointment. That light she only shows to trusted friends was proof as well of how long she've waited for a reason to hope. After holding on for so long and watching her people wilt. Gesturing with her fan, she made her brother bow to her eager plans. Confirming these gossip as gospel and summoning Captain Beidou soon after she smuggled the wandering samurai from the hands of the law. Adding new conditions to their later burned contract and brainstorming how to beg- er, persuade the hero to take on their "commission." The Impossible Task.
Though they say he faced Osial all on his own. It's already plenty impossible enough just hearing about it, but the Tianquan swore by this. So, is another Archon really so impossible? What am I thinking? To even imagine upsurping a GOD. This war is really testing my faith.
Thoma instead tries to imagine the "hero" of these tall tales as the safer alternative. They say he's blond and wore strange clothing. With that, everyone's sure. Thoma imagines it must be very strange than even those of Mondstat, if the people who were free to dress as they wish claim him to be so. Imagines he's an old and battle-worn adventurer. Probably tall and muscly. If stories of the monsters he had defeated on his own were also to be believed. Scarred by trials and gruff in speech. High in both status and stature. A face wrinkled and old with age. A straight-shooting knight-errant who prefers to let their blade do the talking than their mind. Only a man of true strength could take on such straining chores, surely. But not smartly, is he? That's fine. His masters have enough wit and poise to plan a background rebellion. It balances out. Though, they also say he's kind as well as humble. Children would flock him as he is generous with offerings. Gifts and treats from a bag with no bottom.
So, kind eyes and maybe even a beard like that of a caring grandfather. Hair light with age and the knowledge of all those he had seen while facing death. Told to be devoutly followed by a tiny person clad in white. He imagines they have pointy ears and are loud as they are cheerful. Maybe the hero even wears thick covers all over for clothing and armor. In order to keep warm and be protected from the elements; Both natural and enemy borne. Maybe he even wears a vibrant red for the heck of it. Why not? Thoma likes red. Red and white work well together, he thinks. This way, they sound like a real jolly duo. Able to walk around like a bright red target, challenging those in his way without doubt of victory. Picking fights and taking names. Boisterous and prideful. Though possibly exaggerated in some aspects. As most "experienced" heroes tend to be. You see, the retainer still has his doubts.
Either way, he'll see them when he sees them. At least, that's what the rumor mill said. It's apparently hard to mistake the one they call "Traveler" (with reverence), even if it's only the first time you've met him. Thus, that was the very description they gave a just-as-skeptical Beidou. Thankfully, Kazuha offered his special service, which entails insight on the world around him, to repay for his voyage. Vowing to stay with the Fleet until he has compensated his dues to which the good Captain slapped his back with a hearty laugh and a welcome. It was simply a delightful coincidence that Beidou was planning to set up her annual martial arts competition, The Crux Clash, on Guyun Stone Forest in any case. If her network couldn't find the hero themselves, which she doubts, the hero would have to come for them himself.
Afterall, how would any man of many acclaims resist a competition practically made for a person like him? She chuckles, thinking of those who might resign were they to hear of the mighty Traveler's name in attendance on her arena. Why, it would surely be the talk of the seas! Maybe even a storyteller's favorite tale for weeks! She can hardly wait!
But a flash of lightning equally worshiped and feared was enough to remind them of how their journey has yet to begin. Of where they were and what thankless purpose they've taken on despite many offers of exit. Thoma sighs. Genuine disappointment now mars his youthful face. Watching the waves lap upon the beach and moving his gaze over to the Shogun's rage, sealing off Inazuma from the rest of the world that he knows exist outside of it. It is a wonder if anyone beyond would believe in the nation of perpetual thunderstorms or dismiss them, too, as myth. Ignorance is bliss and arrogance is blasphemy, as they say in Teyvat. Who in their right mind would want to cross danger to face even more dangers for mere strangers? Since it's much easier to say that it's not happening to me, therefore, it's a problem that never happened. Thoma knows this. He knows, for he came from a country wherein people would drink themselves to stupor in order to ignore what they find so hard to change. Thus, it's difficult to imagine a savior willing enough to come for them now. He wonders how much it would cost them to bribe the Traveler to stay. Wonders if it's worth it.
Beidou watched the young man be all in a stew and found herself putting a firm hand on his shoulder. "How about this?" She offered. "If you'd like, I could promise to take you out on the open ocean. See for yourself your Almighty Archon's light. I bet you miss it out there. Where the wind breathes and the land thrives. Either way, there would always be room for you on our main deck." Ah. Another exit. Thoma's lips couldn't help but quirk at the kind attempt. But he knows where his loyalties lie. "That's very thoughtful of you, Cap'n. Sadly though, I'd have to decline this time. I have my duties to the Kamisato Clan and, while it may sound quite bold of me to say, I believe they still need me here." He replied, sheepishly.
"I understand." Beidou backed off with a nod. Not at all disappointed in the slightest. The offer only made with the intent to raise his head and successfully remind the guy of his resolve... But that doesn't mean she couldn't tease. She smirked. "Besides, landlubber like you? Best you do stay with your foot on the ground. You do more here. Collecting dues from unsuspecting merchants and mercs. One should wonder how you became so silver tongued and sly." Thoma coughed awkwardly at the jab. Thrown off for maybe the first time since they began this charade. The comparison between him and debt collectors not lost to him. That again? He shook his head. His grin playfully resigned.
"Aw, c'mon! I thought that with all that we've been through together, you'd at least see me as a... an honest friend?" Captain Beidou laughed sharply then. "HAH! Good one! Now, a friend, sure! But honest? I may just have to re-evaluate that one. Thoma, I've had friends pull strings and friends I work with as my employer, then there's both. Hardly any honesty there, though. But you... You are not a gullible guppy. So there's no point pretending to be one in front of me. We're both hires with our own agendas. Let's own up to it as true sailors do."
"Now-now, that's a bit too harsh of a word, don't you think? You make us sound like we have ulterior motives with- Oh, don't give me that look!" He huffed. Both looked at each other all the more amused. Recognizing the other's fondness for those that commands them, but neither admitting it. Neither pushing, too. "Still, it's been a long time ago, but I'm sure there was a better word for it in Liyue... H-How about this? You could just call us recent, hmm... partners of trade!" A trade of mora and supplies for a safe voyage. A trade of sacred silence, secrets, and mutiny of the highest degree. A trade of a wanted man's freedom for a hero of nations' compliance. They're friends. Dangerous friends existing only for convenience.
But friends, nonetheless.
And as Thoma watched the silhouette of the famed pirate ship be swallowed by the mercy of the merciless storm, he breathed in the crisp winds and slowly returned to himself, a caretaker with great affections only to those whom he swore allegiance to. Righting his composure and dusting his pants of sand. He sang his Lady's favorite lullaby beneath his breath in a convincing display of nonchalance as his feet carried him over the hill in which the family household reside. Mind made to report to his Lord about the peaceful shipment of goods, the sweep for unwanted ears, departure of guests, and today's laundry all at once. The clueless sun now rising on the horizon, laying warmth on his shoulders and giving a skip to his step. Pushing him forward. Watching his back.
All these, a looming premonition of an Oath to be given. Humbly kneeling with a golden hand between his, this new believer would one day yield in front of wide and public eyes. Who knew that the seas have yet to bring... A guy worthy of Thoma's friendliness then.
Notes:
Watch me not-so subtly make fun of Thoma looking like Childe for the 100th time and him getting offended about it. Lol. In all seriousness though, ever wondered why Beidou changed her prize plans so easily to convince the Traveler to join no matter what? Making it look like his idea? Of what exactly Thoma and Beidou exchanged to become trade partners? Yeah. This is just to answer that question. Traveler is basically fresh goods and- LMAO. Thoma just described Santa Claus. My boy's so wholesome, he invented Christmas! XD Speaking of, it's September so YAY! If ya know, ya know. (^v^)
Now, QUESTION: "Who do you guys think I'll focus on next? (Other than Aether ofc.)" I wanna see what you guys have in mind. Maybe it'll even inspire me. If it does, I'll give credit where credit is due, so no worries. Til' the next one!
