“Don’t,” Neil heard himself saying, barely a whisper. “Don’t go.”
Andrew took in his blank panic, trying to navigate it wordlessly. Neil looked at him in time to see it click into place. He knew what Neil did for a living. It was a simple equation when Neil asked him not to go for the first time since they met. Andrew would never ask him outright to confirm it, wouldn’t make him break his promise willingly. Neil loved him for his steady, calculative mind, for knowing Neil well enough to understand what he couldn’t say.
They sat like that, memorizing each other until the sun rose high enough to be interruptive. Andrew said, staring, and Neil replied, you too.
