A Data Driven Look at Arthur Pendragon's Experiences With and Attitude Towards Magic

Summary:

There has always been much discussion within the fandom concerning Arthur and Magic. Some interpretations lean towards Arthur taking up an antagonistic role with his distrust of magic, other interpretations paint him as a protagonist easily lead astray. This essay took data recorded over a ten month re-watch of Merlin and catalogued each interaction Arthur had with magic, and hopefully provided some nuance to the discussion.

Notes:

Comments are being left on for now because Authors are interested in the feedback, but we will not be responding to them. This was not written to start a war, it was written out of curiosity. If we find that the comment section has turned to that type of discussion, we will turn comments off.

Chapter 1: Introduction

Chapter Text

This was started as an intellectual exercise for anarchycox and thenerdyindividual. Initially, the plan was just to post the raw data and move on. However, enough people seemed interested in the project that a more in depth analysis was born. The question on the table was whether or not Arthur Pendragon had enough information on the positive aspects of magic to change his mind. The view of the authors is that Arthur was never given enough information to update his views.

This is not to say that Arthur did nothing wrong. As an audience, we are given an omniscient point of view and are given to understand that Arthur took actions that were harmful. The audience is also aware that some of the magical attacks were done with the belief they were fighting for their freedom, and that Uther lied about Camelot being in chaos before he banned magic, as evidenced by the conversation he had with Nimueh that revealed the true circumstances of Arthur’s birth. Arthur is not given the same context as the audience, and therefore is set at a disadvantage when it comes to learning and changing. Arthur can not change his views when he lacks information that challenges them.
