Work Text:
The chill from the rain had never bothered silco due to the loss of feeling, the toxins hadn't burned but instead froze his nerves that had later pooled to his core. The doctor's intervention of Shimmer, a stimulant that strengthened Silcos tolerance of the harsh treatment of the Lanes. While the rest of the men dragged themselves out of the burning rubble. his mind finally caught up to him. His voice is muffled over the rush of blood and the leftover ringing in his ears. Scanning over the fire and the destruction slowly his breathing calms.
"grab survivors and the wounded...find the doctor, now"
The flames had begun to smell of the old wood and metal. Without noticing Silco had gripped the knife hard in the mad dash through the flames, releasing his fingers was stiff and painful as the pressure on his palm showed indents. Standing and looking around at his small group of allies that made it out of the building. thinking to himself the last view of his brother was that form that yelled his name. Remembering which side of the building Vanders form disappeared on, Silco started stepping without thinking. Silco furthering his stride started to bring back his thinking in finding that girl. She would fight in memory of Vander and if her voice rang out, Silco's dream for Zaun would be over before he got the chance to start the industrialization. Everything Started to fly from his mind as he turned the corner to the sounds of the rain and an echo of crying. Expecting to see Vander's girl bawling, the closer to the illuminated alley he found that with each step he realized how tired his mind felt. The light shimmer doses to keep the toxins from killing him, never could fix the feeling of mental anguish of his everlasting wish.
As he started to saunter with each step his back straightened. The fire flickered around the engorged body of Vander that Silco could ignore being the only breathing body was the sobbing little girl. His stare never broke from the little lump of wet blue hair that was shoved into the pavement. As he slowly walked up he heard the silence of the alley get drowned out as he squeezed the knife in a decision. As he bent down he hid the knife but had it close enough that if she shifted wrong then it would be easy.
"Hello little girl"
"Where is your sister?"
Meeting her eyes as she looked up he saw the filth and tears on her cheeks and as a sob escaped from her, made him realize how tedious it was to converse with children. Staring down at her with his closest supporters at his back made him a little over confident. Then as the shift in her eyes flew across her face Silco loosened his grip on the knife in thinking she would respond differently than her sudden small frame slamming into him. Knocking him back with her grasp and pressure around his waist, sudden warmth that came from this small thing. The surprised dart of his eyes and rush of uncertainty that came with his empty hand. Silco's shock was restrained but still ever present looking down at her drenched blue hair, calculating his next move.
"She left me"
Three words that stopped all the thinking and made Silco finally look out at the still body, illuminated by the flames over the engorged chest of what was Vander. Reacting finally to seeing his brother dead made him feel like he broke the water's surface, breathed out finally. Then as his soul gasped for air, he was breathing in the present warmth and feeling the pressure of the little thin frame.
"she is NOT my sister anymore"
Feeling her face and body burrow and shake, he could feel her wish to be held...Silco lifting his arm, feeling the eyes. Silco steaded breathing with his decision uncertain of what his next move would mean to this child. Shifting from his stunned fallen position. Sitting while enveloping her in his arms that pushed her closer into him.
"It's ok"
Softening his voice as the rain dripped from his face onto her already soaked hair. As he felt her sobbing shaking frame settle and still in his embrace. Knowing the betrayal was still stinging her eyes. Much like his scar this girl was hurting now more than ever and like the river toxins his voice seeped into her wounded heart.
"We will show them, we will show them all."
Feeling her steady from her sobbs he felt his words take effect in her small hands, balling up into a fist on his back and then almost as if there were no words to describe how he felt in being the voice she needed. The squeeze of her little embrace made Silco's goal to better Zaun burn more, warming the both of these two lonely hearts.
