Work Text:

Castiel pulled the blankets tighter around him, cold without Dean’s warm body (cat or human) pressed against him. He rubbed a hand across his eyes before opening them. There was some light filtering through the curtains of the bedroom, but it was still hard to see properly.

“Dean?” Castiel called, pushing himself a bit more upright.

“Stay right there, babe! Just wait a sec!”

Dean appeared a few seconds later, holding a tray which had a plate of pancakes and a mug which had I’m Yours written in big red letters on it. When Dean carefully placed the tray across Castiel’s lap, the witch saw that No Refunds was written under the bigger words on the mug in smaller letters. He turned to smile up at his husband, who gave him a quick kiss before slipping into bed beside him.

“Happy Valentine's Day, sweetheart,” Dean said, leaning his head against Castiel’s shoulder.

Castiel laughed as Dean pressed a kiss to his neck.

“Thank you, Dean.”

“I know, I’m the best husband ever,” Dean said, grinning at Castiel cheekily before he continued kissing his neck. “Now eat your breakfast,” he said, pausing briefly and lowering his voice seductively. “So I can have mine.”

Castiel turned to squint at Dean, who just grinned. The witch rolled his eyes at the antics of his familiar before digging into the pancakes and drinking from the mug, which contained tea. Dean occasionally stopped kissing Castiel’s skin to pick the food off his plate with his hands, much to Castiel’s disgust. Dean just laughed when his husband tried to bat his hands away.

“I thought this was my breakfast,” Castiel said with a raised eyebrow.

“Hey, you knew what you were getting when you signed up for me, honey,” Dean playfully reminded Castiel. “Read the mug. No refunds.”

“I wouldn’t dream of it. You’re the best thing that has ever happened to me,” Castiel said, a genuine smile spreading across his face.

Dean bit his lip before grabbing the tray and placing it down on the floor. He climbed into Castiel’s lap, grinning as Castiel tilted his head back so that Dean could continue to kiss up his neck.

“Same for me, Cass,” Dean said between kisses. “I love you so much.”

“And I you, Dean,” the witch replied as he pulled Dean up and pressed their lips together, his hands resting against the sides of the familiar’s face.

-

Dean spent most of the day in Portable Magic curling around Castiel’s legs or sitting in his lap, enjoying the feeling of the witch’s hands combing through his thick fur. Sam spent most of the day rolling his eyes and complaining about how gross a couple they were. Dean always replied to Sam’s complaints with a smug look or, once, by biting his hand.

After the biting incident, Sam had fixed Dean with a glare.

“Can you control your husband, Cass?”

“He’s uncontrollable,” Castiel said solemnly, making Dean meow out a laugh.

Sam threw his hands into the air and grabbed his jacket from behind the counter.

“I’m going to lunch, I’ll be back in an hour. Can you two… Just, please cool it a bit by the time I get back?”

If Dean had been able to speak, he would’ve said, no promises as he watched Sam stride out of the store. He was just about to walk back to Castiel and curl up on his lap again when the door opened, and a woman walked into the store. Dean hissed.

Women like Daphne Allen were bad enough, but Dean truly hated April Kelly. She never relented with her flirting, even when Castiel was clearly uncomfortable. And, once, she had tried to kick Dean but hadn’t counted on him being faster than he looked.

“Hey, Castiel,” April said, walking confidently into the store, completely ignoring Dean. “Happy Valentine's Day.”

“Er, yes. You as well,” Castiel said.

“Have you got any plans?” April leaned her elbows on the counter, fluttering her eyelashes.

“Yes, I have, actually, with my husband. What about you?” Castiel asked politely as he leaned backwards away from the women.

“I’m between boyfriends right now, so, sadly, I’ll be spending Valentine’s alone.” April pouted, doing her best to look woebegone for a second before she bit her lip, her predatory look returning as she looked Castiel up and down. “So, you know, if your ‘plans’ don’t work out, you can always call me. I’ll even give you my number.”

Dean jumped up onto the counter, hissing, his claws extending. April sprang back when confronted by the furious cat. Castiel didn’t even pretend to be sorry on behalf of Dean this time as the familiar continued to glare at April.

“Can I help you with something, April?” Castiel asked, his voice far more pointed than it had been when he had spoken to her before.

The woman seemed to shake herself, eyeing Dean warily before putting a smile back on her face as she looked back at Castiel.

“I’m here to pick up an order of books?”

Castiel ducked under the counter and passed over the bag of books.

“It was nice to see you. Goodbye.”

April seemed to be about to say something else, but another hiss from Dean made her think better of it. As she reached across to take the books from Castiel, Dean seriously considered biting her arm, before he decided against it.

Castiel put a hand on Dean’s back as the door shut behind April. Dean’s fur began to go down slowly, although his claws were still extended. He let Castiel pull him into his arms and stroke him again, purring as he nuzzled Castiel’s shoulder.

Dean left in the afternoon and walked home alone, leaving his witch and his brother at the store. After he and Castiel had moved into their apartment, Dean had spent some time mapping out the arena in his cat-form. He used that knowledge to get in through the bedroom window that he always made sure to leave open for himself.

He turned back into a man once he was in the bedroom and took a second to stretch, wincing at the feeling of his newly reformed muscles. The feeling that accompanied his change from cat to human or vice versa was never exactly painful, but it was always unnerving and a little bit uncomfortable.

He shook the feeling out of his body and walked through to the kitchen, getting used to being bipedal again. He drank some orange juice straight out of the carton to banish the cat fur taste from his mouth before he began pulling stuff out of the fridge and cupboard.

Dean had almost finished the burgers when he heard the door open.

“Dean?”

“Kitchen, hon!” Dean yelled without turning away from the stove.

Dean leaned back as he heard his husband approaching to press a brief kiss to his lips before turning to the stove again.

“I got you some chocolates,” Castiel said as he shrugged off his trenchcoat and threw it onto the couch before he settled himself at the dining table.

“Awesome, we can have those after dinner,” Dean said, grinning as he began putting the burgers together.

“Sam agreed to open the store by himself tomorrow so we can sleep in,” Castiel added as Dean balanced the two plates carefully, trying to avoid dropping them.

“Really?” Dean asked as he placed the plates on the table. “How’d you persuade him?”

“He offered, actually. He just told me to tell you that if you bit him again then he’s going to turn your fur pink.”

“I could pull off pink fur,” Dean said as he sat down across from Castiel.

Castiel just raised an eyebrow before he picked up his burger and took a bite. Dean grinned as his husband moaned around it, closing his eyes briefly.

“Good, then, babe?”

“Uh-huh,” Castiel said through his mouthful.

“You two want a room?” Dean’s grin widened as Castiel opened his eyes to glare at him.

Dean prided himself on his burgers, and he knew Castiel loved them as well. Before long, they had finished eating and were curled up on the couch together, Castiel’s head resting against Dean’s chest, tracing vague patterns over his heart, while Dean scrolled through Netflix while using his free hand to fish around in the box of chocolates Castiel had gotten him, unfoil the chocolates and see how many he could fit in his mouth at once.

Castiel already seemed half asleep, so Dean just put on some western movie that he and Castiel must have watched about a hundred times, and snuggled closer to the witch.

“Happy Valentine’s Day, sweetheart,” Dean whispered to his husband, who just sighed happily and tightened his arms around Dean.
