Summary
“Rehearsal went well,” Gabin began, trying to bring a lightness to his tone, wanting to keep filling the silence with anything until the strange, tense air of the apartment faded around them. He moved to one of the cupboards, reaching to pull down two of the ceramic dinner bowls for once the pasta was finally finished. “Alain gave Chloé the solo, however, so she is already being insufferable. It’s good that Mishi won’t be here when-”
“Can we talk?" Tobias cut him off in a whisper. His eyebrows were pinched together, and he looked nervous, his fingers drumming against the counter top.
There was a heavy thump in Gabin's heart. He finished setting the second bowl down on the counter with a jolting movement, almost dropping it, the sound of ceramic hitting granite loud and harsh in the now otherwise silent apartment.
None of this was how Gabin had imagined his evening going.
“Oh.”
Tobias still wasn’t looking at him.
“Uh. Of course.”

“You do not need to worry about me,” Gabin shook his head, deflecting once more. His heartbeat was picking up once more because Gabin could feel the way that his resolve was breaking a little more with each second he stood here with Tobias. Gabin hadn’t known how easily he could break when faced with someone who really cared for him - he couldn’t remember the last time he had been.
“I always worry about you,” Tobias mumbled in return, eyes flickering over his face. “Especially when you show up three hours early and start crying in my arms.”
“I’m sorry,” Gabin said, voice barely above a whisper. If his fists clenched any tighter onto his boyfriend’s shirt, he might leave behind permanent imprints of his hands.

Tobias squinted down at the picture on Gabin’s phone, then let out a high pitched noise from the back of his throat.
“Where the hell did you get that?”
“Cheyenne sent it to me,” Gabin frowned.
Tobias rolled his eyes with a sigh, “Of course. I keep telling Nicholas to take that off his office wall. I think Jack puts it back up when I’m not there.”
“You do not like it?”
Tobias made a scrunched face at him, “Does anyone like looking at pictures of themself at 22?”
“Oh. So it is not because. . .” Gabin waved his hand a little, as if it would finish his sentence for him.
“Because what?” Tobias tilted his head.
Gabin faltered for a moment, glancing back down at the photo. Now that he was looking for it, he could see the second crutch leaned against the risers, mostly blocked by the man with curly hair - Jack.

“Tobias,” Gabin began, hesitant. “May I ask. . . Other than when we met, you have never. . .”
Gabin bit his lip, trying to find the right words for what he wanted to say. Tobias didn’t react to him trailing off however, still staring at the tile floor of the hallway, moving the toe of his shoe back and forth over a black scuff mark.
“You always let me touch you,” Gabin eventually landed on, nowhere near an actual question, but the crux of it all nonetheless.
Tobias’ sneaker stilled, a quiet squeak ringing through the hallway as a result. Gabin swallowed down the thick feeling in his throat, watching as a few strands of Tobias’ soft hair separated from the others, falling in front of the choreographer’s face. Gabin’s hand twitched to reach out and brush them away.
