Chapter Text

Morgan walked into the supervisor break room. Morgan was not a supervisor but the supervisors were basically never there so they felt comfortable sneaking in. They had just grabbed one of the donuts that were set out every morning, when a person walked into the room. Morgan tensed with nerves, but quickly relaxed when they realized that the person was in a blue button down and not a suit. So they were also not a supervisor. They gave Morgan a calculating glance and then walked over to the coffee pot and started making coffee.

“Nice day out, right?” Morgan spoke up.

After they finished starting the coffee maker, they looked Morgan in the eyes and said, “There is no way you are supposed to be here.”

Well that was rude, thought Morgan. You were at least supposed to grunt in agreement when someone mentioned the weather. And blue button down person wasn’t supposed to be here either, if they were anyone important, they would have to wear a suit. “I won’t tell if you won’t. I’m Morgan,” Morgan stuck out their hand.

The person stared at it and replied “I’m Alex.”

Morgan left their hand out, waiting. Suddenly Alex’s eyes widened in realization. “You have no idea who I am.”

“I know you are someone who still hasn’t shaken my hand.” Morgan replied, and Alex grabbed it and gave it a professional bounce. “Do you even work here? How did you get to this floor?” Alex questioned.

“Oh I work on the second floor, I got a cubicle a few months ago.” Morgan answered.

“That doesn’t explain. You need authorization to get to this floor.”

“No, you need authorization to get the elevator to this floor. You do not need authorization to get the elevator to the floor below this one. Then the same employee key card that lets you in the building works on the stairwell door for this floor.”

“Did you find a security breach?” Alex looked astonished.

“Not really,” Morgan replied, “you do need authorization to get to all the important rooms.”

“Then why did you go to all the trouble to figure that out?” Alex asked.

Morgan shrugged and lifted the half finished donut in their hand. “Donut.”

“… Right.” Alex said, pouring themself a cup of coffee. Alex watched as Morgan poured a cup as well.

“How did you get to this floor?” Morgan asked Alex. Alex said “Key card,” and then took a drink of coffee to avoid saying more.

“… Right.” Morgan replied, then took a sip of coffee as well. And then promptly spit it back out.

“What the Fuck? This is the worst coffee I have ever had. Is this the same instant used all over the building? How are you this bad at making coffee?” Morgan asked incredulously.

Alex looked at the coffee machine and back to Morgan. They shrugged, “It’s not a priority.”

“I think my blood is 90% coffee at this point.” Morgan offered. Then they grimaced and downed the shitty coffee in one gulp. “Look I need to get back to spreadsheets, but come back tomorrow, I’ll show you how to make coffee that tastes less like dirt mixed with river water.”
