Work Text:

"Thank you for coming with me to this," Leia muttered in Amilyn's ear before taking a swig of her drink. It was some pink, fruity concoction that didn't have nearly enough alcohol in it and she wrinkled her nose as she swallowed. "If you weren't here to run interference I think I might've punched someone by now."

"That bitch Tarkin deserved it," Amilyn grunted quietly. "I half wish you did hit him. He's sleazier than a Corellian slimeball."

The two shared a conspiratorial look.

Suddenly Leia stiffened, softly elbowing Amilyn in the side.

Amilyn just had time to straighten her back and glance around before they were face to face with Breha Organa, dressed in a spectacularly understated blue gown.

"Leia, Amilyn, are you enjoying yourselves?" Breha smiled at them, but her lips were tight.

Leia had always endlessly frustrated her mother with her lack of interest in taking over the running of the family charity. She grew easily annoyed with the lavish parties of nothing but small talk held for their benefactors. She'd much rather follow in her father's footsteps and run for senator - at least in the senate there was some power behind the cutthroat dinner parties, feeding into the balance of what legislation would and wouldn't be allowed to pass. Still, until that day came, she was resigned to continue to show up to her mother's parties and act the part of the 'young figurehead' of the family. It put a bad taste in her mouth just thinking about it.

Leia smiled indulgently at her mother. At some point Amilyn's hand had made its way into hers and her thumb was now tracing lazy patterns on the back of Leia's hand.

"You've outdone yourself Breha," Amilyn nodded to her. She didn't mention the sickly sweet punch. Or the unsavory men they'd spent the evening painstakingly trying to avoid.

"Yes, well," Breha blushed indulgently. Regardless of Leia's opinions about following in her mother's footsteps, the woman worked incredibly hard to achieve what she did and was rightly proud of it. "I need you two to stop hiding in the corner back here. This is supposed to be a Valentine's Day party - love and joy and sweetness. The mood isn't right and as the young, idealist of the family I need you to set an example."

"Wha-" Leia began, eyebrows rising.

Her mother continued, "They're about to play a nice, slow song. I need you two to go out there and dance and make it clear you're a couple - kiss or something, I don't know. Everyone will see you and think about how sweet it is that the gay daughter of a prominent family can be openly and happily dancing with her same-sex partner and they'll suddenly start feeling generous with their pocketbooks."

Leia's body was tense and Amilyn's thumb on her hand had stopped moving. "We're not -"

Breha didn't give Leia a chance to finish her protest, grabbing the two women by the elbows and pushing them towards the center of the room. "That's the music! Now go!"

"Maker, I'm sorry about this," Leia's cheeks were tinged with pink as she and Amilyn awkwardly arranged themselves into a very close slow dance, the entirety of their bodies practically pressed against each other. "She shouldn't have dragged you into this."

"I don't mind," Amilyn's breath tickled Leia's ear as she spoke. "Do you? Mind people thinking we're together, I mean?"

"I -"

"I mean, I don't want to make you uncomfortable and I -"

"Amilyn," Leia pulled back just enough to look the taller woman in the eyes. "I don't mind."

Something flickered in Amilyn's eyes for just a moment before they returned to their usual wide, dreamy state. "Your mother said we should kiss," she said after a moment.

"Do you think we should?" Leia felt her eyes involuntarily drawn towards Amilyn's soft, pink lips and she blinked.

"It would help the illusion."

"Okay." Leia placed one hand on Amilyn's shoulder and used the other to pull the woman down to her height, gently meeting Amilyn's lips with her own.

Both women blinked as they pulled back from the kiss, only vaguely aware of nearly every eye in the room watching them.

"I'm sure your mother would appreciate it if we agreed to continue doing this - you know, for her future events," Amilyn was the first to regain the power of speech.

"We do seem to be very good at it."

Amilyn's eyes sparkled, "Maybe we should keep practicing, just in case she asks."

"I concur," Leia was already using her handhold in Amilyn's purple curls to pull the woman back down for another kiss.

From the edge of the room, Breha Organa watched her daughter and her closest friend with satisfaction. Bail owed her $10 for this.
