Two sets of blue eyes quietly met each other as sobering reality set it.
"If there's an after, you know it'll be me picking you up," Steve said.
Shepard smiled softly, if a bit sadly. They hadn't uttered any empty promises even in the afterglow of their night together. He was a realist, and Dominic wasn't about to change now, not when they both knew what it might take to end this war– what it would cost.
"You don't have to." Shepard straightened his lover's collar. "I don't want you seeing what's left of me when it's all over, Steve."
