His Help

Summary:

“It felt like a bad nightmare.” Ezra cautiously spoke up as they moved through the corridors, “Like, a really bad one.”

“It was.”

“… And you don’t want to talk about it, right?”

“Got it in one.”

Work Text:

His first clue should have been that he was actually in a comfy bed, rather than lying on the ground. His head felt like it was wrapped in cotton, senses dull as he tried to calm his breathing.

He could still hear her screams.

Knowing that Hera was still piloting the ship, he allowed himself a moment to bury his face into his hands, desperately trying to expel the feelings into the Force.

KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK.

“Kanan?” Ezra cautiously called out, “Are you- are you okay?”

“Y-Yeah kid… go back to bed.”

“…. The Force says you’re not okay.”

Oh, now he listens to the Force!

The door whooshed open as Ezra poked his head inside, making Kanan sigh wearily, “What time is it?”

Ezra shrugged, “Do you… do you want me to get you a cup of tea?” He cautiously asked, making Kanan smile softy.

“A cup of tea?”

“Well… I heard they’re good for nightmares. Things like that.”

So, they were getting right to the heart of the matter.

“For someone who’s never been to the Temple, you know about a lot of the traditions.” He teased, the words sounding weak, even to him, “A cup of tea… would be ideal.” He got out of his bed, gesturing for Ezra to follow him.

“It felt like a bad nightmare.” Ezra cautiously spoke up as they moved through the corridors, “Like, a really bad one.”

“It was.”

“… And you don’t want to talk about it, right?”

“Got it in one.”

They entered the kitchen, as Kanan went to prepare the rarely used tea leaves, hearing Ezra take a seat at the table.

“Was it about your… Master?” Ezra asked softly, before holding his hands up, “I know, I know you said you didn’t want to talk about it, but… but you sounded odd when that creepy bald dude mentioned her.”

“… it was.” Kanan confirmed softly, before sending a warning glare at the teenager, “Now leave it.”

“Sorry.”

The silence lasted for as long as it took for the tea to seep.

“My parents used to tell me stories to help me sleep after a nightmare.” Ezra whispered, a light flush on his cheeks, “Do you… think it might help you?

Kanan chuckled fondly at the earnest tone, “Do you know any good ones?”

Ezra’s eyes lit up as he launched into a story about the Loth cats of his home planet, with Kanan sitting back and sipping at the bitter tea.

He allowed the words to wash over him, turning all thoughts away from blaster shots and dying screams.

It was a temporary solution, but it would work for now.
