One rainy morning

Summary:

People said the numbness in your arm when you woke up is the weight of happiness, so he wouldn't mind being like this all morning.

Work Text:

The sound of the rain knocking loudly on the window was so noisy that it pulled his consciousness back from the deep slumber he was in. Akito opened his eyes slowly to stare blankly at the familiar white ceilings, trying to collect all of his consciousness before blinking his eyes a few times to make his surroundings more clearer. There wasn't much sunlight peeking through the curtains because of the bad weather so he couldn't really tell what time was it now.

"Where's my phone... hm?"

He tried to get up, but an extra weight on his right arm prevented him from doing so. That was when he noticed his girlfriend was still sleeping soundly on his arm, looking so comfortable. From the numbness he felt, it seemed An had been having his arm as her pillow all night.

Well, people said the numbness in your arm when you woke up is the weight of happiness, so he didn't mind this at all. On the contrary, it gave him a good mood right in the morning. If she snuggled close to him because being in his arms gave her a sense of security then he'd be the happiest.

Carefully as not to wake her up, his hand reached everywhere he could reach to search for his phone and finally found it under the pillow. A quick look at the dazzling phone screen in this dimly illuminated room showed that the time was around 7:58 in the morning.

"About 2 minutes before the alarm rings, huh..." he muttered to himself while looking at the time, preparing for a count down. "...Five... Four... Three... Two... One... You're not waking up, An?"

Akito let the alarm rang for a while before turning it off when there wasn't any sign of the woman on his arm to wake up. He let go of the phone to turn his head towards the sound of gentle breathing beside him, staring at her silently.

"What a peaceful face... at least close your mouth," he pinched her cheek slightly and chuckled a bit when an annoyed scowl appeared on her face.

The current An had a lot of development compared to when they first started living together. At first, she refused to sleep on the same bed, saying she got a bad sleeping habit or that the bed was too small to sleep together. Akito didn't mind though, and An didn't seem to mind either once she slept with him. The small bed later became a perfect excuse to snuggle close on cold or lonely days for people like them who needed excuses for every loving act.

"Back then you wouldn't even let me see your sleeping face, so you always buried your face in the pillow or sleep while facing the other side... I'm glad we've gone past that now."

Thinking about it, it's been almost two years since he started waking up to her sleeping face. It wasn't like she had a habit of sleeping-in, it's just that he usually woke up a little earlier than their morning alarms.

The brief time he had until the alarm rang had become something of a routine for him to enjoy this side of her that he'd rarely get to see for the rest of the day. This quiet and calm Shiraishi An.

While he enjoyed the calming quietness, it didn't mean he preferred her to be quiet like this. He also loved the energetic voice of Shiraishi An when she was awake, so in conclusion he was just completely in love with her, really.

Today was just a little more special since she didn't wake up even after the alarm rang, so he had more time to watch her than usual.

A sleeping An was surprisingly honest, probably because you weren't in the state to try to keep your pride. She would tangle her legs with his and tightened her hug around his waist for more warmth in this chilly morning, which he responded by pulling her closer and stroking her hair without hesitation.

He loved this serene moment, alone in their room with her in his arms, her scent and warmth filling his entire being, being comforted by the sound of her lullaby-like breath.

If this were a few years back, he wouldn't even imagine this woman would be the one he shared this kind of moment with. Even after years of dating, it still felt unreal for him.

It was unreal how he could be this happy.

As he hid her in his embrace, he thought no one should ever see this side of him that was so madly in love with Shiraishi An. He couldn't even keep his smile to himself. Even Touya would totally laugh at him if he saw this him right now, so he wouldn't share this moment with anyone else.

Maybe he'd share this secret with An... that is, only if she managed to wake up at the right time

Just kidding.

"...Nggh... Akito?"

Then as if she sensed that she was being challenged, Akito heard a groggy voice coming from within his arms.

"Morning, An. Woken up, yet?" he said softly, loosening his arms and making eye contact with her who looked up at him after wriggling around.

"Mmh... morning... Is it raining outside?"

"Yeah, it's been raining since I woke up."

"I see, too bad... What time is it now?"

"It's a little past eight."

He told the time to An who wasn't able to search for her phone because she was still being held in his arms. At the announcement of time, An's frown quickly appeared again. "What...? That means I overslept... why didn't you wake me up? I need to hurry and prepare the breakfas—wha, hey!"

Akito pulled her by the waist back to the bed when she was about to get up, getting her falling on his arm and he snuggled with her again under the comforter.

"You slept so well that you didn't even hear the alarm ringing, I don't feel like waking you up," he said, resting his chin on top of her head. His other free arm went back to hugging her waist. "We don't have any plan for the entire day. Slacking off once in a while is alright. If you're really hungry I'll bring you something you can eat here, though."

"No, it's not that I'm hungry, but..."

"...You're hesitating too much. It's cold today."

He dropped a sudden kiss to her forehead, something that he knew well would make her lowered her resistance because of the surprise. He then pushed her to his chest then gently stroked her back. It usually would be hard to fight the drowsiness when you were being given warmth in this chilly weather, and as Akito planned, she relaxed her body like she was giving in.

"But, it's really a waste to have this kind of weather in our free day, isn't it? I was hoping we could go somewhere today though..."

"We can still go out later for dinner if you want, I'd like that too. I think having this weather in the morning isn't that bad."

Because the weather is cold we can use it as another excuse, he didn't say this out loud but An seemed to notice his sly thought. She was looking up at him with a suspicious look.

"You look like you're strangely in a really good mood today."

"That must be because I'm surely having a really good mood right now."

"Did something good happen when I was asleep?"

"I wonder. Something good is still happening even currently."

It wasn't a past tense, but a present continuous tense. Understanding what he meant, her cheeks blushed faintly and the corner of his mouth lifted a little. It's good that you're not as dense as you in the past. She hit his chest lightly out of embarrassment.

"...What's that? It seems the cold is getting to Akito that you start spouting weird things today, so I will help warming you up."

"Alright, I'll be relying on you then."

After giving a light kiss on the lips, they drifted back to sleep while sharing each other's warmth.

Just for today, they decided their day wasn't gonna start until the rain stopped.
