Work Text:

The saying is, “When life gives you lemons, you make lemonade.” Well what do you do if you never get lemons?

My life has always been perfect. Both of my parents are great and strong heroes. When they got together their goal for a family was to make heroes that were stronger than them. Heroes that could defeat any villain.

And that is exactly what they got with me… And I guess with my sister, Scarlet, as well.

When they first found out what my abilities were, my parents, and all their friends, were very pleased. They immediately wanted to start training me. I was their star of hope and they made sure that I knew what their expectations were.

Everyday I trained hard to be the best hero and I excelled in practically everything I did. In my off time, I would dedicate hours to studying all the heroes from history and movies. I wanted to study exactly how heroes eat, sleep, talk, and save people.

Scarlet, who was almost as gifted as me, spent a lot of our training time trying to catch up to me. However, she could never really make it. Everyone said that it was to be expected. I probably took most of the great family genes and she probably just got stuck with what was left.

However, the person who has actively been served lemons was the youngest in our family, Morgan. They ended up at the bottom of the barrel of the gene pool, and it showed in their power. Like everyone in our family, Morgan wanted to make our parents proud and be a hero. When their power showed, our parents determined it would be best for Morgan to be my sidekick.

I overheard our parents talk about it.  Between training Scarlet and myself, as well as staying on top of their own hero work, they had no time to spend training Morgan to be anywhere close to a hero. Being a hero’s sidekick was the most useful position Morgan could have.

Even though our parents never spent much time watching and training Morgan, Morgan would work hard and put their soul into training. To my surprise, Morgan excelled in most of it. If Morgan would lay off the caffeine, they would probably do even better. At least that’s what Scarlet thinks.

“I watch Morgan and all I can see is wasted potential. If they were actually given a chance, they could do some amazing things.”

“Scarlet…. We have no experience in deciding that. Our parents said that Morgan was not capable of being a hero. They were right about the two of us, why would they be wrong now? Morgan might not have accepted Mom and Dad’s words, but they’ll eventually see that our parents were right. Then we can finally focus on Morgan’s purpose as a sidekick.”

“I don’t think you actually mean that Chad…. I think you’re jealous of Morgan.”

“Why would I be jealous? A hero never gets jealous.”

“That Morgan can walk away from Heroes…. And no one would be disappointed in them…. The two of us don’t get that chance. Ever since the beginning, our parents have always had high expectations of us… and we’ll never be able to outrun them.”

“That’s not how a hero should act Scarlet… We should be grateful and proud..HAHA..and be sure to lead and teach those not as great as us onto a better path”

Scarlet didn’t seem to like my answer, so I decided to head off to train.

After all villainy never rests, so neither can a hero!

In the training room, I noticed that Morgan was running laps. I was not very excited to see them, but as a hero I decided that this was my time to take these not so heroic emotions and use them to truly lead Morgan on the correct path.

Ah, look at my sidekick working hard. Just remember, we have the duty to train to become proper heroes. So, slacking off is not an option! You have to be good at your job so I have the opportunity to save the civilians from the clutches of the monstrous villains.

Notes:

Thanks to my friend Ayla for proofing this. You are amazing and a saint for dealing with my chaotic BS.

The idea for this story came to be on a drive home and I thought it was a really interesting idea.
