Chapter Text
PREFACE:
Greetings, dear reader. I am grateful for your choosing to read this. I hope it is out of a genuine interest to learn, as opposed to it being because my name was written on it. But even if that were the case, I hope this may be enlightening for you.
Gears, as we all well know, are bioengineered organisms. They were first developed shortly after the Dawn of Revival; however, they are most commonly known for their role in the Crusades. There are very few people who do not hear the name ‘Justice’ and feel unease. Even after its conclusion, there still remains a great deal of misunderstanding and aversion towards Gears as a whole.
What is less known, however, is their independent nature. The overwhelming majority of Gears during the Crusades were forced into battle under their leader’s control. Upon her death, many Gears were given their own self-awareness and free will back, and left to navigate the world of their own accord.
Since then, human-Gear relationships have gradually, tenuously begun to form. With those relationships came studies through encounters and experience. I hope to cast some illumination on the peculiar yet fascinating behaviors and habits of Gears, as they remain under-noticed by the general public. Whether they be simply for the discussion of biology or to share some anecdotes of my own personal encounters, ideally this will alleviate some of the mysteriousness of what Gears are and have people understand them.
What I wish to emphasize most of all, reader, is that Gears are simply animals, just as humans are. They have no inherent badness, just a simple desire for survival and safety held by all living things. I believe this is something that deserves recognition and respect.
-Ky Kiske, First King of Illyria
