“Dad!” An excited Teddy called out as he climbed onto his father's bed and jumped on top of the sleeping man.
Remus opened his eyes to the sight of his tiny 4-year-old jumping up and down on his stomach.
“Good morning Teds,” Remus yawned as he sat up, lifting the toddler into his lap, and placed a soft kiss in his wild tangles of brown hair.
“Good morning!” Teddy said, tilting his head to get a good look at his father.
Remus looked over to the clock on his bedside table, reading the time. 9:09.
“Shit, we’re gonna be late. We need to get ready,” Remus said, with the air of a man who should have been moving much faster than he actually was.
“No! It’s weekend, I want to go to the park!” Teddy protested.
“I’m sorry love, we’ll go another day. Now we have to go. Today is moving in day.”
“Okay, fine,” Teddy replied as the two of them got out of Remus’ bed and started getting ready, surprising Remus at the lack of petulance.
The following Monday was Remus’ first day at Hogwarts, the university his best friend Lily attended. He had been accepted as a transfer student, in a scholarship program, and was to move into the dorms later that day.
Of course, when Remus had been accepted he made sure to email the dean about his “little problem”. I mean, not that Teddy was a problem or anything, but ever since Remus’ ex got pregnant when the two of them were 17, and then proceeded to tell him that they felt that they weren’t capable of being a parent at such a young age, (as if Remus wasn’t the same age), he had struggled with raising teddy while going to school, especially when his father was… well, his father and his mother had been dead for years.
In the email Remus had explained that he had full custody of Teddy, so if Remus was to attend, Teddy would have to come with him.
The dean of the school, Dumbledore , had emailed Remus back and told him that he could stay in a dorm that had two open spots, and Teddy could occupy the other spot, at least until someone else moved in. He also told him that he and his fellow professors would be more than delighted to watch Teddy once in a while if Remus needed them too if he decided to accept the scholarship, that is.
The email was much kinder than Remus had expected it to be and had convinced him to accept.

After struggling to get both him and his toddler ready, and struggling again to get to the station, Remus was on the train.
A few minutes into their journey Remus felt a
buzz
in his pocket and checked his phone to see that he’d gotten a text from Lily. Lily Evans, a girl who Remus swears was God’s gift to earth, had been almost like a second parent to Teddy, spending every second of winter and summer holidays with Remus and Teddy, or at least every second she didn’t spend studying for upcoming exams that were “much closer than they seem”.
Remus had met Lily in kindergarten, back when his mother had still been around. They’d connected over their shared love of reading (something neither of the two were very good at, at such a young age), and had quickly become friends.
(10:05) Where are you?
(10:06) Just got on the train.
(10:06) You’re supposed to be here in an hour!
(10:06) Ik, I’m sorry. I overslept and Teddy threw a 30-minute fit over what color his socks should be. (He settled on pink.)
(10:07) Aww that’s cute. Tell Ted that I said hi.
(10:08) He says “Hi Wi-wee!”
(10:08) God, I love him so much.
(10:08) At least 20x more than I love you.
(10:09) I am deeply offended by that.

(10:17) Oh my god I’m so sorry Teddy stole my phone. What you received resulted from me barely managing to pull my phone out of his grubby little grasp.
(10:18) I thought you’d had a stroke or something.
(10:18) How does a grown man even get his phone stolen by a toddler?
(10:19) Do not underestimate Teddy, he’s much stronger than he appears.
