“What do you think about the proposal, Naho-san?”
There’s no stars on the night sky. That was the first thing she noted as she gazed out of the wide panned window directly in front of her. She can see the bright city from the floor she was currently at. The building was among the tallest in the city and so it provided one of the best views for the bright city of Tokyo. It was bright, yes, but was it colorful? No. For some people maybe. But not for her. Not for the people who haven’t meet their soulmate. How cruel, the nature rules that is.
“Mom, what is a sowlmeit?” She innocently asked her mother.
“Dear, where did you hear that?” The middle-aged woman asked her 5-year-old daughter.
“I heard the grown up talking about it when I was waiting for you. What is it, mom?” She has always been a curious child.
“Naho-chan. Come sit here, darling.” She patted the seat next to her. Once her child was safely seated beside her, she carefully caressed her dainty hand. “Soulmate is someone you have a very special relationship with.”
“Very special?!” She gasped in excitement.
“Veeery special.” Her mom bopped her cute little nose. Endeared with the reaction she received. “The person will be the one that you will love and cherish you whole life.”
“Like you!”
“Like me?”
“Yes! I love you and cherish you so much! That means you’re my soulmate!” She jumped in glee at the conclusion she made.
Her mother let out a soft laugh at her daughter cuteness. “Yes! Like me. But!” She waited for her daughter anticipation before letting out the truth. “I’m already you father’s soulmate…”
Naho pouted. “Then who will be mine?”
“One day. It will be a very good day where the sun is warm and sky is bright. The breeze will caress your skin and you will feel good the whole day. At that time, you will meet your one and only-”
“But I like stars! Can’t it be at night?” She pouted again.
“Of course, it can! Then, one night when the stars scattered on the sky. No clouds can be seen! The moonlight will kiss your skin and the night breeze will brush your skin so softly. At that time, you will meet them and the world will be so colorful and wonderful! And you will finally see all the colors inside this beautiful world. And they will be there standing by your side, holding your hand while you discover all the new colors!”
“I wanna see colors! It is so boring with the grey shades…” Naho said sadly.
“One day, okay? Now, how about we eat some… ice-cream!” Her mother tried to cheer her cute sad daughter.
“Yeay! Ice-cream!”
That was 20 years ago and she still see no color.
“Well, mom doesn’t mention how long will it take to meet one…” She muttered under her breathe.
“Naho-san?”
A voice called her out of her thoughts. She turned her head to the side and realized almost all of the long table occupant is looking at her, waiting for an answer. Right, she was in a meeting with this new developer, crap.
“I’m sorry, I’m feeling a bit dizzy. Can you repeat your previous question?” She can feel the blood rushing to her face. Ashamed of getting caught daydreaming in a middle of working.
“Oh, no it’s fine. I’m just making sure we are on the same boat about the terms and conditions.” The man politely replied. “The night is beautiful, huh?” He commented as he gazed out of the window.
Naho followed his gaze and stared out the window. “It is.”
Suddenly, her eyes caught another pair of eyes outside of the window. It was a man. He has a pair of dark eyes with an equal dark hair and he was upside down. That’s the only thing Naho could pointed out at the two seconds eye contact.
The world is colorful.
And he is falling down.
“Someone is falling down!” The man beside her quickly stands up. He must have seen it too.
“What!”
They all quickly go to the window, looking down while Naho stayed frozen on her seat.
She can finally see colors. Then, the falling man was he soulmate?
“Naho-san? Are you okay?” The developer asked her.
“No.” She muttered slowly.
“No?”
“No!” It finally caught up to her. But it can’t be. They just met. No!
She quickly run out of the room to the elevator. She nearly tripped down because of her heels so she took them off and throw them aside and continue running with only her socks on.
“Naho-san?” The man followed her with worry at her sudden behavior.
She quickly pushed the elevator button and patiently wait. She could use the stairs but they’re on the 60th floor. Right, they’re on the 60th floor then how can he…
Ding! The elevator was here. She quickly got inside ignoring the man who followed her with worry. She’ll deal with him later. She was wearing a bright colored suit. She remembered picking it from her blue closet. Then this must be blue.
The elevator opened, bringing them to the lobby. She quickly ran outside where she saw a crowd of people.
She slowly made her way into the crowd.
No. No it can’t be. No no no no…
Red. She vaguely remember learning in primary school that human’s blood is red. Huh? She thought the red mentioned was bright but the one splashed and running on the pavement right now is a very dark red.
She fell on her knees, not caring about the rough concrete scrapping her skin or the smashed skull in front of her. The muttering and chatting from the people her were instantly tuned out.
Everything was blurry except the one in front of her. With a shaking hand, she carefully pulled of her suit and covered his head from people’s eyes and flashing cameras.
Then, the tears came out. She rested her forehead on his no longer beating chest and crumpled his shirt with her fist. She finally let herself to let go of the pain she felt for all of these years feeling lonely.
She finally met him.
Mom.
I finally met him but there’s no stars on the sky. The moon was concealed by the clouds and the wind was harsh on my skin. The world is colorful and wonderful. I saw colors for the first time and I can’t wait to discover more about them. But he won’t be there to hold my hands. He won’t be standing by my side.
It’s not fair. The world is not fair.
