Vogel im Käfig

Summary:

Yet a frown twisted Wei Wuxian's features, concern shining in his eyes. "Yes, but I'm not asking about him. I'm asking about you."

Ymir paused.

Softly, as gentle as the summer breeze. "Ymir. Are you happy?"

--is she?

A slave and an unorthodox cultivator meet. Neither are villains.

Notes:

Okay so I was about to do the Kim Dokja!Wei Wuxian thing, but then--
Okay, listen, listen.

I have so many feelings for the tragedy that is Ymir Fritz's life. Continuing to give love to a man who never appreciated it? And worse; thought of her as less than human?

*deep breath* bOI

Soo~ like typical Nie Huaisang fashion, I'm bringing Wei Wuxian to at least make things better. As he can xDDD

Some scenes are inspired from A Story About Her by bacondestiny. Please check it out!! <3

And please enjoy this oneshot! ^v^

Work Text:

There was a body floating down a body of water.

The girl with no name, having just gained the power of a God, saw it drift down the river's current. In her giant form, the girl doesn't think anything could intervene when she followed her curiosity to check it out.

She knows she doesn't have anywhere to go now. She's free, she's alone, she's scared...

Where else can she go?

Th-the body was unusual, though.

For one thing, this person wore black and red clothes that looked like layered robes. It could be a wedding dress, or something. The girl doesn't know.

They have long hair, too. It was tied up in a dirtied red ribbon, soaked like the rest of this person.

Still in this giant form, the girl approached to try and take in this foreign thing. She noticed the red pooling from the body, bleeding out from the wounds that must be hidden in their clothes.

Was this person hunted as punishment, too?

Then, the person shifted, and the girl realized that this person may not really be dead yet.

Eyelashes fluttered, as the eyes of the person opened.

Their eye color was silver, though dulled and devoid of light.

The girl wonders who this person is.

==

At first, it was confusing. When the person first woke, they spoke in a language that couldn't be understood by anyone in the kingdom.

"Shuí...", they rubbed their face, visibly exhausted. They focused their gaze on the girl, or the giant form that's currently holding them, and tilted their head. "Wǒ zài nǎlǐ?"

The girl couldn't speak. Not through this giant form, where she doesn't know how to truly control yet. Nor though herself, for her tongue was lost long ago.

The person didn't seem upset with the lack of a reply, though. They simply looked on through the fingers of her giant form, observing the sky and the horizon.

...she wonders what they are thinking.

--fzz. All of a sudden, there was a red glow on the person's fingertips. She watched, fascinated, as they drew indecipherable lines in the air--connecting and weaving them together, until they'd finished and the lines absorbed into them.

The person inhaled, the red glow settling in his chest. Silver orbs gazed back.

"Hello", the person says, and--oh, now she can understand him.

You have a nice voice, she thought, as she inclined her head to acknowledge the greeting.

The person stares at her, wide-eyed. Not knowing how to respond, she stares back.

They raise a hand, hesitantly. Then thought better of it and dropped their hand down, muttering something under their breath.

The girl tilted her head. She wonders, again, what this person is thinking about.

==

Not long after, the girl ran out of energy.

Unable to go anywhere else out of the fear of the unknown, the girl's giant form settled near the village of the King that freed her. She'd curled up in a ball, the person still in her palm, and then her vision went black.

Her eyes opened again, to the sticky sensation of something clinging to her skin and dress. Steam rose all around her, dissipating to the sky in her vision--

And there was movement. Her eyes met beautiful silver.

"H-hey! Are you--", the person frantically looked around, at the giant body slowly fading away. A split second later, strong, warm hands pulled her from the remnants of the giant, taking her in a firm--but not painful--hold. "Hold on, I--I got you."

There was a sense of weightlessness for a second, as the person jumped off with her. The silver-eyed person then kneeled down, gently putting the girl back in her feet on the ground.

The girl backed away, staring at the person. Now that she's not so giant anymore, she can take a closer look at this person.

The person's face was honestly beautiful, like those maidens the girl has seen from the king's noble court. Locks of ebony black hair frame their face, and a streak of red trails down from the back of their head over their shoulder.

There was a metallic scent of blood coming from their clothes, but the location of where it came from was obscured at best. The person's black robes hid all the wounds he might have.

And...

"There you are", the strange person smiles when their eyes met again. "Hi, there."

They had been checking over her, trying to see if she got hurt as she was staring at them. The girl's arm and leg didn't hurt anymore, so the effort is probably futile.

But even so...

"I'm Wei Wuxian. I...can I know your name?"

This person is so incredibly kind.

To her, who never experienced even a morsel of compassion ever since her village was taken...it was something new, for the girl.

==

King Fritz was benevolent, though.

When the Eldians found them with the rotting giant body, they were met with weapons threatening the girl and the person. The person tried to fight back using these strange black things and a flute, yet the wounds on his body left him incapacitated anyway.

The pair had no choice but to be dragged towards the throne, after that.

Yet when King Fritz passed judgement, he chose to spare her and this kind stranger.

Yet King Fritz gives her clothes and a room fit for royalty.

Yet King Fritz gave her a name. Ymir.

The girl is free.

Ymir is free.

He set her free.

And to make up for the hunt that required her to become so, he rewarded her with more.

It's a different form, but it's still kindness. Isn't it? King Fritz intended this from the start, after all.

He says he can make her greater than she is now.

He says she will be useful and loved, if she obeys him.

Ymir wants to be loved. More than anything.

Therefore, choosing to serve King Fritz is just as easy for her as breathing is.

==

Things were awkward between Ymir and Wei Wuxian, at first.

Wei Wuxian was sent to the healers to get his injuries treated, and that's when it's found that his--turns out he's a he--condition is...unique. The wounds are shaped like cracked porcelain. The healers had managed to stop the bleeding, yet they still spread across his torso and limbs.

The stranger did something that stopped it from spreading, using the strange glowing lines he writes in the air. He also made these strange circular inscriptions on the ground that looked like they functioned the same way the glowing lines did.

King Fritz was impressed, seeing the effects on Wei Wuxian's own condition because of these. How he simply seemed to heal himself, or at least stop the wounds from worsening, in the blink of an eye with these strange ways.

Regardless of it all, though, Wei Wuxian still falls asleep in long periods of time. He'd fall asleep one night, and won't wake again until a few days later.

The sleep schedule is strange, just like everything about this person is strange.

Ymir can't bring herself to approach, due to that. What could she even say, with this tongue that has somehow regrown? She's still incapable of speaking, having been unable to speak for a very long time...but if she could, what can she even talk about?

She can't exactly catch Wei Wuxian while he's awake, either, too busy trying to master this new power and gain more of King Fritz' favor. She found that she can only transform when her blood is spilled, and she can also heal her injuries even without

Ymir is happy. She's happy, because she's useful now, and the people look up to her, they love her--

King Fritz smiles at her, he's making her great, utilizing this power to conquer nearby villages and--

Still, when she passes by the infirmary where she knows the kind person is still sleeping, she can't help but wish that she could talk to him. Ask about the glowing lines, where he came from...

Eventually, the invisible boundary between the girl and the person was broken. The one who broke it wasn't Ymir.

"Mmph. Potatoes are still better than radishes", red and black robes left the infirmary, munching on what seems to be a white radish. "This is delicious, though."

Ymir stared at him in confusion, hanging from the ledge of a house. Where did he get the radish, actually--

Then another radish was tossed in her direction. Instinctively, she scrambled to catch it.

Wei Wuxian was looking at her now, dull silver eyes brightening a little with that smile on his face. He waved a hand. "Did you eat yet? For some reason, I'm famished."

The girl blinked. Naturally, she thinks, this person must be starving; he's slept for 3 days straight again, after all.

"Hey, you want to come with me?"

Another radish was thrown to her. She had no problem seizing it, this time.

==

No one really bothers to talk to Wei Wuxian, except for King Fritz--though Wei Wuxian doesn't like the king's guts for some reason, and always made Ymir's savior run out of the room Wei Wuxian is staying as soon as he got in.

"He can also be useful. Just like you, Ymir", the king told her this, once Ymir asked him why he's constantly trying to talk to Wei Wuxian despite the firm rejections.

And--yeah. As she followed him around and got to know this person in the times he's awake, she could see how.

Wei Wuxian was creative and a genius, able to create solutions to problems with the unorthodox method he uses.

When one of the personal servants of the king struggled with finding warm water on short notice, he simply drew the lines--talisman, he called it--unto the container where the water that's already gathered is. Instantly, the temperature of the water turned warm.

Another time, a thief who just stole a bag of coins couldn't be caught. When the guy ran past Wei Wuxian, Wei Wuxian simply flexed his fingers and pulled his arm back. Immediately, the thief fell to the ground like he'd been yanked back, the guards quickly apprehending him afterward.

So, that's indeed true. Wei Wuxian is useful, can be useful--if only he'd just let himself follow Ymir's king.

Then again, that's not all.

Wei Wuxian is also mischievous. He pulled a prank on the guards and ran away unrepentantly when they came for his head. He also roped in Ymir and the other children into catching fish and playing around--at least, as long as the parents allowed them to.

Many people express their dislike for Wei Wuxian as well, finding him too lively, too...untamed. A lot of people are also charmed by him, on the receiving end of his cheerful smiles and given a helping hand by him.

Ymir even caught King Fritz' gaze lingering on the man's back. She was sure that Wei Wuxian had the favor of the king as well, like her.

She just wasn't sure if she liked his total dismissal of that blessing.

Even so, that particular flaw aside, he's also patient. He didn't mind Ymir being unable to speak, even when the other servants made fun of her for it. He even taught her how to speak again when she expressed her desire to do so, envious of the way Wei Wuxian had so effortlessly opened a conversation with one of the stall sellers.

And whenever she couldn't muster up the strength to do so, he also came up with some simple signals she could just draw on his arm in an effort to communicate; though so far, it's only been hello, yes, no, and help.

He didn't know Eldian writing yet, so he's been teaching her alongside himself whenever he has the time.

Being with him like this, in the duration of almost a whole year...

Ymir discovers that there are two kinds of kindness.

One is the kindness that is disguised by cruelty and amended by gentle praise and gift-giving, shown to her by King Fritz. Sometimes, to force someone to be great, you need them to undergo the worst. To make it remember not to fly off too fast and endanger itself, one must break the bird's wings first.

Ymir loves him for it since he gave her everything. Is continuing to give her everything.

But kindness can also be directly shown without hiding. In every little action to help another, in every laughter caused from a child, in every delighted grin poked and prodded from Ymir; this is the warmth Wei Wuxian shows to her.

She finds that she loves both versions, just as much as King Fritz and Wei Wuxian both became very dear to her.

==

Ymir had been eleven, nearly twelve, when King Fritz began to move beyond villages to conquer kingdoms.

The time has come, he said. Now that the Eldian Kingdom have amassed such power and conquered territory, it was time to move on to bigger prey; fellow kingdoms.

Two years now, since Ymir obtained the power of the Gods and Wei Wuxian became the sun in the life of her and the other citizens, and Wei Wuxian still refused to cooperate under Ymir's savior.

"Wei Wuxian, Eldia was always meant for greatness", the current King persuaded, with Queen Hilde and the other concubines by his side. "Why else have Ymir and you put here, if not for the benefit of this kingdom and you?"

"Don't test me, Your Highness", Wei Wuxian spoke with a venom that only seemed to be reserved to the king. "I love the citizens and the people of this kingdom, don't get me wrong. But I refuse to play a part in stealing the freedom of others."

And Ymir couldn't understand.

Eldia--is the greatest civilization in this world. That's this kingdom's destiny. With this power, she can give the throne this kingdom so deserves.

So she can be loved, so she can continue being loved.

Wei Wuxian has always been uncontrollable, though. And so only Ymir was sent off to conquer the kingdom of the hills; the Owenenate kingdom.

For the good of Eldia.

For the good of the rising Empire.

==

Though Ymir is the one always sent to the front lines, Wei Ying is the one who defends the people during every conquest.

Black wisps of condensed darkness called resentment rose up to form deadly walls around the territory of Eldia, preventing any surprise attacks from other kingdoms. Ymir could see the fallen bodies of the enemy outside Eldia territory, every time they came back.

She marches with the king, proudly raising her head for this great accomplishment.

Wei Wuxian turns away from the head of the beheaded king of the Owenanate kingdom put on a spike. He looked far from proud.

--but King Fritz was still happy. He heralded her as a hero, as a goddess.

The people cheer.

Ymir couldn't understand why Wei Wuxian refuses to meet her eyes.

==

She's thirteen. She's fourteen. She's almost fifteen.

Eldia continues to rise. It has become an Empire, rivaling the Romans in terms of territories conquered.

King Fritz commands her to build, and so she builds bridges and roads using the crystallization power she and Wei Wuxian discovered. She leaves pieces of her form behind, but it stays there, a useless part of her stays as her flesh eventually grows back, and the people sing as their life became more luxurious and comfortable.

Wei Wuxian is the source of happiness for the people, all from the native Eldians to the ones swallowed by the Empire after every conquest. He listens to the concerns of the citizens, he empathizes with them, and he does what he can to make their lives comfortable.

He trusts Ymir to tell the king of the needs of the people. Ymir is glad, that Wei Wuxian entrusts her with it.

As far as she could see, even King Fritz relents and gives the people what they want when she relays Wei Wuxian's message.

At most, this is her two favorite people finally cooperating together.

This is the best Ymir can even hope to get.

==

King Fritz is her savior.

He is the one that set her free, the one who gave her the opportunity. If she wanted to, she can--she can strike down this Empire she helped build, crush his puny body when she wants to. She won't, of course, because she's grateful to him, because he gives her happiness.

He tells her he is pleased. He tells her he is proud of her.

She smashes whole armies into bloodied pulps on the ground for him, because--that's what he needs. That's what he wants from her, and as long as she does what he asks, he's--he's happy. He loves her, even. "Like my own family", he said.

And Ymir feels warm, feels proud, as he places a gentle hand on her skull and rewards her for her efforts in any way; new dresses, jewelry, food, anything.

King Fritz is her savior. And she is so, so grateful to him.

But--

But Wei Wuxian...

While logically, he didn't really do much for her to change her life, he's still important to her.

He's her anchor. Someone she can be safe to ask for hugs or spend time together--unlike with King Fritz, who had Queen Hilde and therefore can't risk spreading rumors that are certainly incorrect now that she's become a maiden.

He teases her, makes her laugh, and makes sure she takes care of herself. He's also patient and caring, he taught her how to read and write, and he talks to her like she's--she's still a human.

Not a goddess. Not a demon, regarded by the enemies. But a human deserving of companionship.

Wei Wuxian is--

He's like an older brother to her.

And Ymir is truly blessed, to have them both.

==

Ymir doesn't know when her birthday is. But Wei Wuxian being Wei Wuxian, simply barrelled on through that fact.

"Happy birthday!", he cheerfully says, holding out his present for her to take. "You're sixteen now! Any boy you have your eye on? Give 'em to Xian-gege, I'll make sure he treats you right."

Ymir shook her head fondly, though she takes the gift anyway. She writes on his arm. \Stop saying silly things.\

An overly-dramatic squawk. "I'll have you know I'm very serious about this!"

She giggled. Really, Wei Wuxian is very silly.

King Fritz was kind enough to give her the date of her birthday, which is the day when she first got her power. Fitting, as this is also the first time she met Wei Wuxian.

Which means she gets to give gifts to him, too. Just to...return the favor.

Every gift was rare from Wei Wuxian, since he'd only give within her birthday. However, they're all different each time. All of them were also clearly put in with so much effort that it was clear he'd made it with great effort.

This time, he gave her a hairbrush. Talismans were engraved at its back, and when she combs her hair...she finds that it doesn't tangle at her hair at all.

"I noticed that you had trouble with your hair, so I made that", Wei Wuxian smiled. "My sist--someone that was dear to me had the same problem in the past. Thankfully, I still remember how to make it."

Ymir keeps the hairbrush close to her chest. She loves it.

==

She knew that Wei Wuxian was a secretive person. He gives and he loves freely, without restraint; but he was tight-lipped when it came to where he came from. Whenever she tried to ask, Wei Wuxian would have this pained expression that would also pain her from asking more, even if he plays it off afterward.

She wanted to relieve his burden, even for a little.

So, in return for hairbrush, she gave him a journal. Something to write his thoughts with.

Queen Hilde said things like this are a big help. So, that must be true.

Wei Wuxian gave her a hug for it, which was a huge relief.

Ymir is glad that he likes her gift. Even when it can't be compared to his own.

==

Ymir is sixteen when Queen Hilde was thrown out of favor and exiled from Eldia.

It came as a huge shock to everyone, honestly. Six years since Ymir obtained this power, twenty years more since King Fritz and Queen Hilde had been married--and he'd thrown her away? Just like that?

She could feel lingering eyes on her and Wei Wuxian, coming from King Fritz. It happens a lot now, whenever they're made to stand next to the throne.

Ymir doesn't know how to feel about it.

Wei Wuxian's tight grip on her hand definitely tells how much he hates this kind of attention, though.

==

"Ymir", Wei Wuxian began. "Are you happy?"

The youthful girl tilted her head in question, pausing from the flower crown she's creating. Why the sudden question?

"Sorry", the man tried a laugh, scratching his cheek sheepishly. "It's just that...I'm just wondering. You're always working, and working, and working for that man, and..."

Ymir held out her hand.

Wei Wuxian gave her his arm, and she started to write characters on it.

| I live for Eldia and the king. As long as he's happy, I will continue to do everything for him. |

As long as he loves me--

Yet a frown twisted Wei Wuxian's features, concern shining in his eyes. "Yes, but I'm not asking about him. I'm asking about you."

Ymir paused.

Softly, as gentle as the summer breeze. "Ymir. Are you happy?"

--is she?

Yes, of course. She's done so much good for the empire, and she gets to keep the love of the people and the love of her savior.

It turns out, too, that King Fritz had thrown Queen Hilde out for her. To court her and make her his queen.

Even if she feels bad, because Queen Hilde was such a kind soul--

King Fritz freed her. And is now making her royalty.

So...

So, of course, she's happy. Of course.

How can she not be thankful for this?

==

She's just a little bit--tired of it all, that's all there is.

Tired of always having to chase approval. Tired of always being fearful that--she'll be useless, when she messes up, when she makes a mistake.

But it's fine. Right? Everyone gets tired, but as long as she doesn't give up--

And even it it's like that, she still has Wei Wuxian. She still has her brother, who constantly tapdances on everyone's last nerve and smiles at her and comes up with antics for her amusement. He lets her rest when she needs to.

Queen Hilde had said that family will always be there, even when romance is not enough. Ymir could tell she was right in that regard.

So, it's fine.

It's fine.

==

She thought it was fine.

Wei Wuxian--he still sleeps days at a time, these past years. She's discovered that it has something to do with his soul, that he's like this because his soul shattered and now it's trying to mend itself together.

That information made her adamant not to make him fight, honestly. She doesn't want his condition to be made worse, that she'll lose him like her father and mother and grandmother--

But she thought--

She thought--

==

She's seventeen, halfway to eighteen, and she's been Queen for a year now. She's given birth. A little girl, who King Fritz named Maria after his own mother.

Wei Wuxian continues to sleep, oblivious to the world that changed without him for a year.

==

Eldia and Marley are waging war. Ymir makes sure Maria is in safe hands before she has to leave.

Wei Wuxian continues to sleep his time away.

Ymir is determined to finish this battle quickly. As fast as possible.

==

The first three battles are successful.

Wei Wuxian never stirred to defend the people, or congratulate her for the victory--or anything.

==

Ymir waits. What else can she do?

==

By the time Eldia has conquered half of Marley's territory, Ymir is already nineteen and Maria one.

As the army arrived at the castle, Ymir felt her little girl grab her hand and pull her. Exhausted as she was, she still let Maria pull her to wherever--

And then familiar doors were opened, and bright silver eyes turned to look at the newcomers.

Ymir's eyes glistened with tears.

==

The cracks on Wei Wuxian's body were gone now. When he slept that night (Ymir was seized with fear because what if he never woke up again--), he immediately woke by the next morning.

"Look at that", he mused, looking at the sun shining through the window. "I think my soul's completely healed now. Neat."

Ymir tackled him.

==

"Look! So strong!! Aagh I'm being defeated!", Wei Ying wailed dramatically on the floor. "Help! This strong, beautiful baby has defeated the Yiling Patriarch!"

Ymir hid her snicker behind her sleeve, watching as her two-year old firstborn, Maria, crawled on top of Wei Wuxian. Maria had an impressively unimpressed look on her face.

"Guaahh so strong, ah, so strong--!"

Maria whacked her chubby little hands on Wei Wuxian. "Bad! U'cle! Bad!!"

That simply made Wei Wuxian laugh harder. "Oh noo~ have mercy, have mercyyy!"

Ymir found it hard to contain her laughter now.

Then the doors opened, and her husband entered the doors. Wei Wuxian immediately fell quiet once he saw the guy.

"My slave, Ymir", King Fritz starts, and--it's like a joke, right? Because she's his wife, she's his queen. "You are well?"

Ymir nods, caressing the unborn child in her womb. King Fritz has lots of concubines, lots of offspring--but she knows, she knows, that he only checks after Ymir, after her wellbeing. He loves her.

"Ymir's not a slave, a**hole."

Wei Wuxian didn't get the joke, though. Perhaps it's only natural, as he was asleep for two years.

"Now, now, Wuxian", her husband chided. "You don't want to make my Ymir sad, do you?"

"If you give me your head, I would be eternally grateful."

"You shan't. You can ask for another's head, though."

Ymir looks at them both awkwardly. At least they're getting along?

==

By the time Marley was taken, Ymir had borne two more children. Rose and Sina.

Wei Wuxian absolutely adores the kids, and seemed to make it his personal mission to be the best uncle ever.

King Fritz kisses her, and murmurs. "You're determined not to give me a son, eh?"

That just made Ymir feel confused, but there's nothing to it. Now, after every passionate night, he makes her drink contraceptives.

Ymir has her three children, her brother, and her love.

And Eldia is now the greatest Empire to ever exist.

==

Wei Wuxian childishly made a face, watching the king flirt with his many concubines. "What a deadbeat."

Ymir frowned. No, that can't be it--can it? Her king was simply...busy.

Yes. He still loves her girls. He comes to dote on them, after all.

Occasionally, yes, but still...

Wei Wuxian saw her expression, and awkwardly tried to steer the topic away. "Right! Well, uh. Radishes."

Ymir blinked.

"Do you know how to plant radishes?", the silver-eyed man brought up--then sweatdropped. "The girls can use radishes."

Maria and Rose made a face at their uncle. Shina only giggled.

...the Queen of Eldia reached out to write on Wei Wuxian's arm. | Why? |

Wei Wuxian simply laughed, then a wistful look overtook his face. He waved it off.

And then he refuses to elaborate, which is typical but also frustrating.

==

King Fritz loves her. He gave her the world, all thanks to his command. Without him, she wouldn't be where she is now.

He loves her. Right?

==

"Uncle", Ymir heard her second youngest whine. "Don't tell me you're going to fall asleep."

Wei Wuxian yawned, the thirty-one-year-old man patting Rose's head absent-mindedly. He was fanning himself with a hand. "Don't worry. Just...I think it's too hot today. Damn it, I should have asked for an iced drink instead of some tea..."

Ymir looked at her brother in concern. Did he catch a fever? If so, she could simply make him go back to his room with the girls.

That would leave her and her husband alone, which could finally give her some private time after this inspection--

A soldier thrust his hand to the sand, unearthing a spear. Ymir's eyes widened in horror.

She throws her hands at her children and her weakening brother, but then the assassin didn't even glance at them. Their eyes immediately went to the one that held the crown.

She didn't hesitate. The spear was thrown in the air, and Ymir threw herself to block the blow.

Red spilled. Screams, carnage, as the rest of the soldiers turned the assassin into swish cheese.

The girl crumpled to the floor, the pain of the wound excruciating on her chest.

"MAMA!"

"YMIR!"

She heard her girls cry out for her. She felt Wei Wuxian's hands trying to take out the spear, hands shaking, hysterically murmuring. "Okay. Okay. You'll be fine. Alright, Mir? You're okay, you won't die, just--"

It's okay, she wants to tell her brother. What kind of wife would she be, if she won't take a spear for her husband?

But--

But.

She sees him, staring at her. Apathetic. Disinterested.

No.

No, no.

Then--then what was it all for?

He couldn't. He couldn't.

He loves her. Doesn't he?

If not, then--

Then the girls--Queen Hilde--everything--

"What are you doing? Get up.

                    I know you won't die from that spear.

                                Get up    and work. This is the reason

                                                         you were born in this world.

                  My slave,

                                               Ymir."

==

"...where did we leave off again?"

Blue eyes perked up, turning to his friend. "What?"

"Two thousand years ago, the Founder Ymir continued to submit to King Fritz", Eren Yeager said, grey eyes sweeping over the beautiful river of lava before them. "Leading to the Titan powers we see today. That's right...even after obtaining power from a God, even in front of an enemy that burned down her home, killed her parents, and tore out her tongue..."

Blond hair was ruffled by the wind. Armin Arlert frowned. "What in the world...made her do that?"

"...it's hard to believe but...the Founder Ymir was in love with King Fritz."

Armin's brain grounded to a halt. "Wh-what?"

"That's the reason", Eren's shoulders sagged. "Not only that, but--"

==

"--you believed", Wei Wuxian stared at her incredulously. "That I will be brought back when you continued to serve that f**ker?"

A girl with blue eyes and blond hair sheepishly nods.

The Yiling Patriarch, now in the body of Mo Xuanyu, pinched the bridge of his nose in annoyance. "Ymir."

The girl flinched back. Wei Wuxian's eyes instantly softened.

"...for what it's worth, I'm sorry, too."

When Wei Wuxian found that Ymir died, that her soul was gone, he lost it. Sick with always losing those he loved, he tried to bring her back--using the Sacrificial Summon.

Ymir didn't come back to life. Wei Wuxian disappeared from that world.

--and he was reborn without any memories from his time in Eldia, inside Mo Xuanyu who also used the Sacrificial Summon array.

Sheesh. Talk about coincidences.

At least things worked out for the better.

"You'll be okay, though. Right?", Wei Wuxian had to know. "You can come with me. Lan Zhan will love you. ChengCheng will be glad to have another sibling, too." After he lovingly bullies his brother about it, of course. Hehehe.

Ymir thoughtfully considers it. Then, she writes. | I'll think about it. |

The silver-eyed man smiles. "That's--that's good. I want you to be truly happy, and free, this time."

Ymir managed a small smile on her own, before she lunges to give Wei Wuxian a hug. Wei Wuxian stumbled a little, as the force almost knocked him over, before he chuckled and hugged back.

And then...

"Time to go", she whispers quietly to him. "Sorry, you'll have to forget me again."

Wei Wuxian perks up. H-huh--?

"Wei Ying?"

Wei Wuxian startles, spotting gold ones in his vision. The silver-eyed man laughs awkwardly. "Ah, sorry, love. I dozed off waiting for you."

A crackle lighting, and almond eyes scowled down at him. Jiang Cheng crossed his arms. "You didn't even think to get me or Jin Ling?"

"Aiyah, Jiang Cheng!", Wei Wuxian laughed, even as he let Lan Zhan pick him up. It was nice to snuggle up to his husband--and nice to exchange banter like this with his brother again. "I'm not a delicate maiden!"

"You're a stubborn pain in a** is what you are--"

As they all started to leave, Wei Wuxian glanced at the town's surroundings for one last time.

A girl was looking at him. Ten years old, by the looks of it, with long blond hair and blue eyes. She was holding a hairbrush, brushing her hair while tending to the sheep.

Their eyes met. The girl waves at him.

Wei Wuxian waves back, feeling a strange deja vu. Do I...know this girl?
