Summary
The face of John Irving is the first one Edward sees. To John’s left is George Hodgson, and then Captain Crozier, blessedly bored, attending the conversation as little as possible and looking to his glass of whiskey for whatever relief it may bring him. Then, to his left, is Sir John, and to his left again is Captain Fitzjames. He is gesturing with his hand, his fingers shaping a ring. The size of a cherry, Edward’s mind supplies, and feels something swooping up in his chest. He lets out a sharp laugh.
