Work Text:
Hook doesn’t understand.
Emma’s on the way to Regina’s office and she’s wondering what’s so hard for Hook to grasp. When she’d backed out of the kiss and said she felt guilty, he’d said “over Regina?” and looked so surprised and accusing as if it wasn’t obvious. How can Emma be ready for a relationship when her best friend is hurt, is a mess, because of her. No, she doesn’t have time for a relationship.
She needs to make things better with Regina.
It had finally, finally, seemed like things were going on the right track with Regina but of course she had to mess it up. Way to go Swan.
It’s not like she’d intended to cause Regina pain, but Regina’s right, her intention doesn’t really matter. Regina’s lost her true love again.
True love. The word wants to make Emma gag just as much as soulmate does. Your true love doesn’t just drop from thin air, you have to put in the effort to make relationships work. Emma knows that. And as if stupid pixie dust has the power to choose your soulmate for you.
But it is what it is.
For now, Emma needs to focus on making things right with Regina.
—————————
Regina wants to give up. Just shatter on the floor. Sleep forever.
And maybe that’s the reason she’s sitting on the floor currently with her back pressed to the door.
She’s lost her true love yet again and no one believes in her yet again.
All because of Emma Swan.
Although Regina can’t really say Robin was her true love, that would be a reach. She liked him, yes, but did she love him? She doubts it.
Suddenly, someone tries to open the door from outside. “Gina! I know you’re in there, I can see the lights on.”
Think of the devil, the devil arrives.
Regina’s about to say “go away” then thinks the better of it. Emma will most probably not leave if Regina asks her to, better to ignore her.
Regina hears Emma sigh. Then Emma speaks, “I know this is all complicated but you can have happiness.” The woman’s audacity—
Emma cuts through her thoughts. “I know it doesn’t seem like it but you just have to…fight. Okay, if you won’t I will. Henry brought me to Storybrooke to bring back the happy endings. My job’s not done until I do that for everyone. Including you.” She says the last two words softly and how dare does Regina’s heart clench at that.
Regina hears footsteps and she gets up and opens the door before she can stop herself or think twice. “Emma, wait—“
Emma turns, smiles, and walks back to Regina. “Hi,” she says, just like the very first time, and Regina’s heart clenches again. “Look, I’m sorry for what happened and I know it was my fault—“
“Emma,” Regina cuts her off before she can go rambling again. Regina almost shakes her head fondly at that thought. “Thank you. For…that speech about happiness. It- it means a lot.”
“Really?” Emma smiles. “I’m glad.”
“Why don’t you come in?” Regina invites Emma inside her office.
“Thanks,” Emma says. “You know I mean it, I’ll help you find your happiness. I’m sure there are better suiters in Storybrooke than Robin Hood. What’s your type?”
Regina blinks at her. “You wanna…help me find another soulmate?”
“Sure,” Emma shrugs. “How hard can it be? What’s your type?” She repeats.
Regina stares at Emma for 2 seconds then slowly walks toward her. “Blonde,” Regina says, playing with Emma’s hair. “Strong.” She squeezes Emma’s arms. “And not just physically. Someone who’s so strong that she’s spent her whole life fighting and she’s still fighting, not only for herself but also for the people she cares about.”
“Uh…” It’s Emma’s turn to blink at Regina. “That’s very specific.”
“Emma, you idiot,” Regina chuckles.
She softly presses her lips to Emma’s.
“Oh,” Emma breathes. She laughs nervously. “Okay, I guess, not that hard at all.”
Regina laughs and gathers Emma in her arms kissing her again and Emma kisses her back.
And maybe Emma was right, she can find happiness after all.
