Work Text:
Emma has messed up big time.
She’s ruined Regina’s happiness.
Regina finally had love again after Daniel and Emma brought back Robin's dead wife and now everything is ruined. But Emma can’t apologize for saving someone’s life. No, she’s upset for Regina but she doesn’t regret her decision. She’d do it again in a heartbeat.
But that doesn’t mean she won’t try making things right with her best friend.
And she’d followed Regina outside Granny’s to do just that until literally everyone interrupted. Now Marian’s standing here standing in front of Regina’s soulmate and family calling her a monster. Which, okay, she may have killed a few thousand people in the past but the past is the past, right? She’s redeemed now.
Regina walks away at that moment.
“Regina!” Emma says and takes a step forward to follow her but Hook interrupts with his good hand.
“No good has ever come of pushing that woman,” he says.
But no, Emma’s not gonna push her. She’s gonna…pull her, in a hug, if Regina doesn’t kill her for it.
Emma takes off in a run and thankfully catches up to Regina pretty soon.
“Hey, Regina! Wait up!”
Regina sighs heavily and turns. “What now, Miss Swan?”
“I just…” Emma trails off because she just what? What’s there to say? She’s ruined enough for Regina already, the least she can do is give her space. “Nothing. Sorry, I’m gonna leave.”
Emma turns around to leave but Regina’s harsh scoff stops her in place and she turns back around.
“That’s it?” Regina demands. “You give up?”
“Wha—“ Emma doesn’t understand. “What do you mean?”
“You’re a coward!” Regina spits out.
Emma flinches. “Regina, I- I don’t understand.”
Regina laughs wetly and shakes her head. “Of course you don’t. That’s okay, Emma. Leave.”
“What do you want?” Emma asks helplessly.
“What do I want?” Regina demands incredulously. “You’re the one who ruined my happy ending again and you have the audacity to ask what I want?”
Emma winces. “Regina, you can’t seriously believe he was your happy ending.”
“And why not, Miss Swan?”
“Because,” Emma sputters, “He got destined as your soulmate by fucking pixie dust. Can’t you see how stupid that is?”
“Well,” Regina says, “Who else do I have?”
And that’s the last straw because Emma blurts out, “Me!”
Regina for her part just barks out a laugh. “You?”
Emma can’t back off now, it’s too late, so she nods. “Yep, me.”
“Oh, yeah?” Regina challenges.
“Yeah, I can prove it,” Emma challenges back.
“Okay,” Regina says, “Prove it.” And she raises her chin higher.
Apparently, that’s all Emma needed, because she surges forward and captures Regina’s lips with her own, her hands coming up to hold Regina to her, and Regina kisses her back and pulls her closer.
And this is destiny. But they fought for it. And here they are.
