Work Text:

“do your best jump, as fast as you can and… fly.

i will send the ball… to you.”

these words floated like birds do in the sky inside hinata’s head. why, why.
of course hinata doesn’t have a clue.

it felt as if someone said this to him once upon a dream, in a dream where nobody else was around and this sentence existed in a beautiful and coaxing endless galaxy.
it felt like butterflies tickling your stomach, like closing your eyes and seeing the sun behind your eyelids, like opening the window in the middle of the road and letting the wind caress your hair.

he felt on top of the world.

“idiot! why didn’t you move?! we’re in the middle of a game, do i need to remind you?!”

never mind.

“stop calling me an idiot! i was distracted, okay?”, kageyama looks so mad and it’s just a practice match.

“pay attention then! idiot hinata…”

“i said to stop calling me an idiot!-“

“will you two quit it?! some of us are trying to play volleyball here!”

after practice hinata returned to his previous thoughts. those dreamy words seemed a bit foreign now and kageyama was to blame. always ruining his moments just to get yelled at.

but it was true that he had been a little distracted, okay maybe a bit too distracted. and it was all because of that stupid kageyama. all because he got inspired in training camp or something and now he wanted hinata to actually fly, which sure, it’s a bit ridiculous if you think about it. so why was hinata still thinking about it? and why did he actually feel like flying? this is so, so stupid.

“this is stupid…”

“you’re stupid.”

“ah! don’t scare me like that kageyama! my heart almost went baam!”

“what nonsense are you talking about now.”

(ugh, so emotionless. stupid kageyama and his stupid face. )

“whatever. just stop getting distracted in the middle of practice. it’s annoying.”

stupid kageyama! “you’re annoying!”

“haah?! you’re the annoying one!”

“whatever! i won’t get distracted anymore so it doesn’t matter.”

“you better not… who else am i supposed to give the ball to?”

hinata turned to look at the boy with surprise.
(had he heard right? )

“what’d you say kageyama?”

kageyama furrowed his eyebrows and faced his shoes as they continued walking.
“…i said that you’re the only one that i want to set the ball to…”

oh. oh, oh. i see.
hinata let his eyes return to the boy beside him, and for a second, a short second, kageyama let out a loose smile.

thump.

(huh. huh?
what was that? what. what, wait. no, no. no. )

kageyama turned away and continued walking.
hinata on the other hand, seemed to stop completely. everything inside him seemed to stop.

no, no. no. no. no. this can’t be. no, please, no.

(“do your best jump, as fast as you can and… fly.” )

“hurry up, you look like an idiot standing there.”

hinata’s eyes followed kageyama once again, and once they found each other all air around them seemed to suddenly disappear.

brown eyes melted inside blue ones.
hinata felt as if he was floating, as if everything around them wasn’t visible to the naked eye, as if the soft lights around them were stars and they weren’t on japan, on the planet earth but standing in the middle of the milky way. it almost seemed to smell like the most elegant flowers were surrounding them and as if spring blossomed in front of it all. oh, yeah spring. ah.

hinata understood now.

(“i will send the ball… to you.” )

thump, thump.

the sound of his heart made it more clear than ever before. he understood everything. it felt as if he could see everything with real color for the first time.

“pfft-“, everything inside him shook and he let out the loudest laugh he could. happiness radiated through him, it was so obvious.

kageyama frowned once again, probably thinking that he was being laughed at.

(that’s not it at all. )

“what are you laughing at, dumbass?!”

this situation, just everything about this seemed hilarious. how could he be so oblivious?

kageyama closed his eyes with frustration and turned to walk away.

(that’s not it. wait, that’s not it at all. )

“kageyama, wait!”

hinata felt the blood return to his legs as he ran to catch the stupid boy he liked so much. (he likes him so so much, it makes so much sense. )

everything fell in slow motion. time seemed to stop for a minute as hinata catched up to kageyama, as he extended his skinny arms and held onto kageyama’s slim waist to make him stop, as hinata closed his eyes and tasted his luck as he rested his forehead on kageyama’s back.

thump. thump. thump.

“…i like you.”
