Ice Skating

Summary:

Taking love advice from the internet again, Venom plans a surprise date for Eddie.

It...doesn't exactly go as planned.

But Eddie has fun anyway.

Work Text:

"So where are we going, V?" Eddie asked from inside Venom as he and the symbiote swung through the city around midnight, carrying Eddie's largest backpack on their back. Venom had him "blindfolded," which he was completely fine with, as this way he couldn't see Venom taking death defying leaps from impossibly tall buildings like he liked to do. Still he was curious about the surprise date Venom said he had planned. All he knew was that Venom had asked if he could order something for them online a few weeks ago, and given Eddie the price, which Eddie had approved, and that Venom had been extremely excited when the package had arrived this afternoon but wouldn't let him see the contents. All he had told him was that they were going out that night and to dress warmly.

"I told you, it's a surprise." Venom told him. "Which means I'm not telling until we get there."

"All right," Eddie agreed, honestly excited.

It was only a few minutes later when they arrived. Eddie felt his feet hit snow and then Venom slide off him. He opened his eyes, taking in the scenery. The snow sparkled in the moonlight, thick on the ground and glistening off the nearby pine trees. In front of them was a frozen lake. It could have come out of a picture from a Christmas card.

"It's really pretty here, V." Eddie told him honestly as Venom took his muscular humanoid form.

"Thanks, but we're not here just for the scenery." Venom said proudly as he reached into their backpack, pulling out...two pairs of ice skates and a helmet.

"We're going ice skating?" Eddie asked in confusion.

Venom nodded eagerly. "The internet said this was one of the most romantic things a couple could do in wintertime!" He then noticed Eddie looked more befuddled than thrilled. "Was I wrong?" he asked.

Eddie immediately shook his head. Venom had put so much effort into putting together a romantic date for them and he wasn't going to spoil his joy. "No, Venom, it's a great idea. I just... don't know how to ice skate." he admitted.

"That's okay.  I don't either, but it looks easy! And we're the greatest vigilante in LA, we can easily defeat a lake full of frozen water." Venom boasted, passing Eddie his skates as he sat down to put on his pair. He slid them on easily but then frowned as he fiddled with the laces. "Um, Eddie?"

"Yeah?"

"How do I tie these?"

...

After finally figuring out how to lace their skates, Eddie and Venom headed out onto the lake, both of them stumbling like newborn calves. Eddie was beginning to regret this, but Venom was so excited that he'd never tell him that.

"We need to stay close to the edge, V, just in case the ice in the middle of the lake is weak." Eddie told Venom.

"Good idea." Venom admitted. "Now, Wikihow said we need to spread our feet like this to glide." The symbiote took Eddie's hand, taking a few gliding steps onto the ice, and Eddie moved with him, actually surprised at how well they were doing so far.

And that's when Venom's foot slipped, and he fell backwards. Eddie yelped as he was pulled with him, twisting so he land sideways, but ending up landing right on Venom's muscular chest in a rather intimate position. Venom looked embarrassed, but Eddie just laughed. "Looks like the internet was right. Skating IS romantic." he teased and took the opportunity to steal a kiss as he lay on Venom's chest. Venom's embarrassment immediately turned to happiness as he eagerly kissed back.

They simply enjoyed this for a few minutes, kissing happily on the ice and enjoying the closeness, then decided to try ice skating again.

They tried gliding a few times, using the tips Venom learned from WikiHow, then decided to try stroking.

"Okay, we lift our foot as we glide, set it back down, then lift the other...  Oh, and we need to look forward, not down, so we don't crash into things." Venom told Eddie. Not wanting to pull each other down as they tried this new move, they decided not to hold hands, and to only keep a few tendrils connecting them.

"Okay, I think I'm getting it!" Eddie said triumphantly, then realized he was gliding too close to the middle of the lake. "V, quick, how do I stop?!"

"You um..." Venom's eyes widened. "I don't know! I forgot to look it up! Here, I'll just pull you in!" He sent tendrils around Eddie's waist, which quickly tightened, slowing Eddie and starting to pull him back.

And then the ice under Eddie's feet cracked.

"Eddie!"

...

"V, I told you, I'm fine." Eddie reassured his boyfriend for probably the twelfth time that night as Venom fussed over him, wrapping him in a third blanket in front of the fire. "I didn't go under or anything. I barely even got wet, you pulled me out of there so fast."

"But you fell through the ice! You could have drowned or gotten hypothermia!" Venom said anxiously as he pressed a mug of hot chocolate with cinnamon and marshmallows, Eddie's favorite, into his hands.

"V, that lake's barely shoulder deep at its deepest point, not to mention, you were right there with me. You would have never let me drown. And yeah, that water's fucking cold, but you got the water off and warmed me up immediately. Just relax. It's all okay. C'mere, snuggle with me."

"Why can't I just get this stuff right?" Venom sighed, looking down as he sat next to Eddie. "Every time I try to do something romantic for you, I screw it up."

"What?! No, you don't, V!"

"Yes, I do! Remember when I tried to bake you cookies? I nearly burned the house down!" Venom yelled.

Eddie shook his head as he wrapped an arm around Venom. "Okay, first of all, you didn't "nearly burn the house down," you just caused a bit of smoke and set off the smoke alarm. And remember what happened after that? We baked the cookies together and had a lot of fun. And it's the same for today. Yeah, we probably should have learned some more about ice skating first and did it in an actual rink so it was safer, but hey, we still had fun! Like me falling on you, that was VERY romantic." Eddie kissed Venom on the cheek. "And yeah, I fell in the lake, but we did learn to skate a bit, and now I get to snuggle with you beside the fire while we drink hot chocolate. That's a pretty good date night, don't you think?"

Venom brightened a bit at this. "Yeah... You're right!" He grinned at Eddie. "And I know how to make it even better..."

"Oh?" Eddie asked with a grin.

Venom just smiled even wider and pulled him into a kiss.
