Work Text:
The air is cold on the rooftop, the sky a beautiful mix of orange and blue hues. The city’s lights started to light up slowly as the sun set.
Jeno and Jaemin decided they were going to watch the sunset. They had an early dinner, making sure to catch the sunset on time before climbing up to the roof of their apartment building.
It was a little dark, with no light on the roof. It was dusty and clearly unused, no one frequently went there. Though Jeno swore he’s seen some guy go there often, just chilling.
The sky was still bright, the sun still up but it was only a few minutes before it would start to set. The blue, orange and pink hues were like a painting come to life, the clouds mixing in with it. Jeno smiles, he likes his view a lot.
They’re sitting by the edge, just behind the short railing, a clear view of the bustling city and setting sun. It was a sight to see. Jaemin turns his head to look at Jeno and he feels warmth despite the cold weather. Jeno’s in the black hoodie that he shared with Jaemin and Jaemin smiled.
“We should do this more often,” Jaemin mumbles, as Jeno leans in and lays his head on Jaemin’s shoulder.
Jeno smiles, taking Jaemin’s hand into his and holding onto it, not planning on letting it go anytime soon. His eyes are focused on the streets below them before he looks up at the sky, orange and pink. It was almost magical.
“We’ll be too busy to do this every day soon…” Jeno says and Jaemin chuckles.
“I know. But we have to take breaks too.”
Graduation was coming up and things were only getting busier for the graduating pair. Jeno was glad they took this month to do as many things as they wanted to do before they started getting busy.
“Sure. I would love that,” Jeno says and Jaemin squeezes his hand thrice, Jeno squeezing back the same number of times.
They stay quiet as they watch the sun go down between the high buildings, the sky slowly getting darker, the shades of orange and pink mixing like paint. It’s not a sight they’re used to seeing, but it’s one Jeno definitely wants to see more.
Jeno and Jaemin enjoy the silence together, sitting with their thoughts. It didn’t have to be loud with each other, or always talking because sometimes all they needed was each other’s presence. That was enough. It didn’t matter what they were doing, as long as they were together.
“We’re kinda like the sunset,” Jaemin says, grinning a little as he watches the fiery sun slowly disappear between the buildings.
Jeno hums, eyes not leaving the trace of colour that the sun left behind. “How?”
“The day is ending and tomorrow will be a new one,” he says, thumb caressing the skin on Jeno’s hand. “We’re graduating soon… we’ll be ending our journey and starting a new one soon.”
Jeno smiles and hums in agreement. His eyes leave the sky, lifting his head off of Jaemin’s shoulder and looking at him. “Are you scared?”
Jaemin chuckles, the sky magically changing from its fiery colour to a darker, cooler tone. One that fit perfectly with the night. Jaemin was scared. It was a new beginning for both him and Jeno and the uncertainty of the future scared him.
There were so many things that could change in their lives and Jaemin was afraid of the uncertainty of their future. How things could change for better or for worse. He couldn’t help but worry, the thought of leaving his usual lifestyle a little unsettling. He wasn’t one to worry about this kind of thing but soon they would be starting a completely new journey.
“Don’t be afraid,” Jeno says, smiling softly at the other. He squeezes Jaemin’s hands thrice and Jaemin smiles back. “Whatever happens, we’ll be going through it together. Every up and down, we’ll go through it together.”
Jaemin grins, leaning closer to Jeno and smiles.
“Just like the setting sun has its beautiful colours, you have me. Always,” Jeno says and Jaemin can’t help his worries feel lighter.
Oftentimes it was Jaemin saying encouraging words to Jeno, the latter a lot more anxious than him. But that didn’t mean Jeno wasn’t one to say such words. It was a balance that Jaemin appreciated. And with Jeno, it was always special, always had meaning.
Who else would tie the orange-pink hues of the sunset together with their love?
Jaemin grins and nods his head. He still worries because worry is inevitable but knowing that Jeno will always be there made his heart lighter. He stares at the sunset once again, this time looking up to appreciate the beautiful colours before they disappear into the night.
Jaemin trusts Jeno that when the sun sets, he will be there for him. The same way he will be there for Jeno when the sun rises.
