Angel had learned to live with the dread, to follow the simple rules to make sure his resigned idleness went unbothered. His very first memory was of his mother clutching his face in her hands, explaining with tears in her eyes how to avoid angering Doña Alma and her family. If they were good, they would be fine, she had promised. He, like everyone, knew better than to say anything bad about their rulers.
