Falling in love wasn't something she'd planned on. And Hermione Granger always stuck to the plan.
So when Draco Malfoy sauntered into the Head's dormitory, she quickly started at her textbook, pretending to reread the page of Hogwarts: A History, something he'd seen her do a million times before.
But the words were blurring and she couldn't quite tell which chapter she'd opened to hours before.
"Granger, have you been waiting up for me all night?" he drawled, quirking an eyebrow at her exhausted state.
"Shockingly, my being up has nothing to do with you, Malfoy," she said quickly, too quickly. She hoped it was believable nonetheless.
"It's well past 2 in the morning, go to bed," he said in a gentle voice, watching her run a hand through her untamable curls.
She fought herself, not wanting to give him the satisfaction of doing what he told her, but it was late and he was home safe.
"Goodnight," she said, tugging herself towards the stairs that led to her room.
He smiled, glad she couldn't see it. "Goodnight Granger."
