Chapter Text
It has been two weeks since the unit solved Kelton's murder and arrested Deputy Superintendent Katherine Brenan. Antonio was gone, and a new officer named Vanessa Rojas had arrived four days ago. Hailey had been observing her as Voight had asked after momentarily separating her from Jay.
Her relationship with him had changed after they had both been shot in the van. They faced death daily on the job, but that day it had felt so close. To think, if he hadn't reacted to throw them both to the ground, neither of them would be alive. From that moment on, they had both become closer than they were, physically now. Subtle touches were passed at different times, when one (or both) would get shot, the other would lightly touch the shoulder saying "are you okay?". Or when they were in time outs and both joked with the other, and gave each other gentle taps playfully.
She knew that her breakup with Adam had also taken its toll on her and Jay. From the time he found out until she called him one day late at night to tell him it was over, Jay had kept to himself with her, texted her less in the evenings with small talk, or invited her out for a beer less like he used to. And now he was doing twice as much of that as before. Although she pretended not to notice, downplaying the fact that her relationship with her partner had changed since she broke up with her ex-boyfriend.
Right now she's in her car with Vanessa, she had picked her up to take her to work. They had stopped at a coffee shop to buy a coffee for each of them before finally leaving for work. She had really liked the new girl from the first moment, and already knew a lot about her. She had had a difficult childhood like her, only with different aspects. She knew she had grown fond of her.
"And well, that's how I left my fourth foster home, for climbing in through the window at night after a party" Vanessa said.
"God, how old were you?"
"Fifteen or sixteen, I honestly don't remember very well."
"You must have been a pretty troubled girl" Hailey said with a small laugh looking at her.
"Actually I was, I was quite a troublemaker and that got me into quite a bit of trouble."
Hailey laughed and returned her gaze to the street. She took a big breath as she felt a small discomfort in her stomach. She breathed out.
"Mh" She let out a sound.
"You okay?" Vanessa asked as she heard her.
"Yeah, I..." She inhaled as she felt that discomfort in her stomach again. "Can you switch with me and drive what's left to the district? I'm not feeling very well..."
"Uh, yeah, sure."
Hailey put the car's blinker on and pulled over. She got out and walked to the passenger seat. She sat down and rolled down the window as soon as Vanessa started driving without asking any questions. She closed her eyes and took a breath to stop that discomfort she was having.
Arriving at the precinct, they both waved to Platt and entered the intelligence room. The other three members of the unit were already there, and Voight could be seen in his office talking on the phone. Hailey gave them all a little wave and walked to the break room. She poured herself some tea and leaned against the furniture with her eyes closed.
"Hey."
She opened her eyes at the familiar voice.
"Hey."
"Rojas told me she switched with you in the car because you asked her to" Jay walked toward her and stepped in front of her. "Are you okay?"
She smiled. "I'm fine" She said. "Probably just got my blood pressure up, I'll be better in a little while."
He nodded and looked sideways at her cup. "Are you drinking tea? At work?"
"Uhm, yeah, why?"
"Nothing, it's just unusual for you."
"I just had a bit of a stomach-ache and wanted to have something that wouldn't fall heavy on me like coffee."
He smiles at her and they both go to their desks.
The day passes quietly as they catch up on paperwork, and Hailey doesn't notice when there are only three of the unit left in the room.
"Bye guys, see you tomorrow" Adam pronounces putting on his jacket. "Don't stay so late" He winks at them both and heads down the stairs.
Hailey sees Jay. He rolls his shoulders up in a sign that he doesn't get it and they both forget about it.
Fifteen minutes later they both get up and go to the locker room. They put their stuff away while they both talk about trivial things. Hailey finishes laughing at a joke Jay made when the sick feeling in her stomach comes back to her. She grabs her locker suddenly startling her partner.
"Hailey? You okay?" he walks over to her and puts a hand on her shoulder.
"Um, yeah yeah, I just... I had a stitch in my stomach, but I'm fine."
"Hailey, that's the second time that's happened today, maybe you should go to the hospital or..."
"Jay, I'm fine, really" She tries to calm him down.
"I can call my brother if you don't want to go to the hospital."
"No Jay, I'm fine, really, I don't need a doctor."
He looks at her worriedly and she smiles at him.
" Calm down, okay? I'm fine, I just didn't eat enough today, I'll be fine tomorrow."
He nods slowly looking into her eyes, his worried look not going unnoticed by her. She touches his shoulder and gives him a caress before saying goodbye. Jay sighs as he watches her leave and walks through the station to his truck.
He drives to his building after stopping by a supermarket to buy some things that were missing from the apartment. He opens the door and leaves what he bought on the counter. He takes a package of cookies from one of the drawers and sits on the couch as he opens it. He turns on the TV and gets ready to continue watching a series he had pending.
It is not more than two hours later when he receives a message from his partner.
Hailey Upton : Hey, Jay, can you come over to my apartment? I need your help with something...
Jay frowns slightly at her asking him to do that at this hour. Still, he types into his cell phone the answer he doesn't hesitate for a second to give.
Jay Halstead : Sure, I'll be right there, everything okay? Are you okay?
Hailey Upton : I... I'll let you know when you get here, don't worry, I'm fine.
Jay Halstead : All right... I'll see you there.
He quickly puts on his jacket and heads to his truck. He drives quickly, wondering what must have happened to Hailey to suddenly speak to him nine o'clock at night asking for help. He is strangely anxious to know if she is okay and doesn't realize until he stops at a stoplight that he was going faster than he usually does.

He arrives at Hailey's building in less than fifteen minutes. He parks in the first free spot he sees and goes inside, gives a little wave to the concierge he already knows from his usual visits to his partner after work, and takes the elevator up to Hailey's floor. He stops in front of her door and rings the doorbell. In less than twenty seconds Hailey opens it. She's wearing light blue sweatpants and a loose white T-shirt. She has her hair tied in a hastily made ponytail, with a couple of stray hairs over her face. Jay would say she looks adorable if he hadn't noticed the panic in her eyes.
"Hey" She says softly as she lets him in. He takes off his shoes and leaves them in the entryway and hangs his jacket on the hanger.
"Are you okay? What do you need me for?"
"I..."
Her eyes travel from Jay's face to her kitchen island, where two boxes sit on it. Jay looks at them too, moves a little closer and holds his breath when he notices what the boxes are from.
"Hailey..." He mumbles, but she interrupts him before he can finish.
"I think I'm pregnant."
