Not A Promise

Summary:

Modern AU with no massacre/death involved

Sakura and Sasuke have always had a special relationship, though Sakura wasn't quite sure how to define it. An afternoon of watching a romance drama seems to finally get them to talk about it.

Work Text:

Sakura knocked two times before opening the door. She's been here a thousand times before, that Sasuke actually told her that whenever a week passed and she didn't come, his family would start asking what happened to me.

"Hey." Sakura called out, seeing him on the floor by his television. He looked up and nodded when he saw her.

"Hey." Sasuke said back, smiling a little.

Uchiha Sasuke. Sakura didn't really know what she is to him, or what he is to her. He is not just a friend, she presumes. She wonders if she can already consider their relationship as more than that.

She like him, and he likes her. They both know this, and they express their feelings to each other openly. Though, they never really clarified anything to each other. They never really told each other explicitly. For them, it's 'actions speaks louder than words.' And she can hear him loud and clear, and she's sure that's the same for him.

She presumes she can also call this meeting of theirs a date. It's just hanging out in his room, watching movies and just talking. It's what they usually do whenever they are not too busy with university, Sasuke with pre-law, and Sakura with pre-med. People might say it's not much of a date, but if anyone knew Uchiha Sasuke, they'll understand the significance of this.

"So, what are we watching today?" Sakura asked as she plopped next to him by the floor. They usually just watch series, movies or anime, sometimes even in complete silence. They can both be very into a movie—that's one of their similarities. But it never gets awkward. They're just comfortable around each other that way.

"Have you watched Proposal Daisakusen, yet?" He asked, picking up the DVD. "Izumi-nee left this here the other day. I guess she and Itachi-nii watched it together."

"Oh, yeah. I've watched that when it aired." Sakura said, smiling fondly at it. It's one of her favorite dramas of all time.

"I've watched some of it, then too, but I thought you'd want to watch it again, do you?" He asked.

"Yeah, I kinda miss that, actually. I really like the story. Also the male lead is very cool."

He raised his eyebrows at that. Sakura shrugged. "I'm a girl. I do tend to be attracted to handsome guys." She said, looking mischievously at him. This is how we talk, nothing direct, only implied.

He chuckled. He knows most of her crushes. They don't really keep any secrets from each other.

He put the disc on his DVD player and pressed play. He then went back with the remote and sat besides Sakura, both of their backs leaning on the side of his bed.

"Can we skip to episode 4? I love that episode." Sakura asked, and she knew she was grinning excitedly.

He let out another chuckle and said, "Sure."

Sasuke pressed the next button a few times, and after that they grew silent, focused on only the drama.

They were very quiet, just absorbing the episode until they reached the second male lead's proposal right when the clock ticks 12 o'clock and the female lead turned 20.

Sakura was surprised when Sasuke asked, "Why is that?"

She looked at him in question. He smiled in amusement at her bewildered expression and said. "You said the proposal is really a wonder. Why?"

And Sakura realized she must have said her thoughts out loud.

"I just thought... it's a bit surreal, ne? What happened there." She said, eyes returning to the television. She watched as fireworks exploded on the screen.

"What do you mean?" He prodded.

"When I watched that the first time, I was still just thirteen so I didn't really think of the age, but now. I'm eighteen, you're nineteen, that's only just a short time before we become twenty as well. But I can't imagine myself being married in just a little over a year from now. I mean, I've always dreamed about that, but to look at it in front of me... it's really surreal." Sakura explained softly, a bit distracted by the drama.

He was quiet after that, and for a while they just watched.

Or Sakura thought they were both watching. It was after the episode was finished that she realized he wasn't watching anymore. He was looking right at her, quiet, as if in ponder.

"Sasuke-kun?" She called to him. He looked troubled.

He sighed. "I was just thinking. About what you said..."

She blinked, wondering if she might have upset him. "What about it?" She asked.

"You've dreamed about your wedding day?" He asked instead.

"Well, yeah." She said, blushing a bit. "You know, it's every girl's dream."

He frowned. And this just worried her.

"What is it?" She asked again.

"Well, with you in pre-med, I guess I assumed we have the same... mindset." He trails off.

"What exactly do you mean?" Sakura asks, confused.

"You know, it's every decent guy's dream to make the girl he... love's dream come true..." He suddenly said, softly.

And then she realized the implications. She felt dizzy at his meaning but flustered at his conclusion. How stupid can she be?!

"Oh. Oh no. I wasn't— You don't—" She started saying, not really knowing what to say.

They never really talked about 'them' and surely not about getting married. And she knew his view about this.

He had mentioned a  few times (whenever his grandfather would tease us or give a passing comment about anything about it), that he doesn't want to get married.

He's very dedicated to the path he has chosen, and he's very considerate. The real reason he doesn't want commitment is because he had set his goals since he's a kid, had everything planned, and had known it would take a lot of his time and focus. He wouldn't have much time for anything else and it would be unfair for the other party to only be the second priority.

"I know. And you know my view about this." He said with a sad smile. "At least, at the moment."

Sakura looked at him, trying to decipher his words. Uchiha Sasuke has never been so puzzling to her as he is right now.

"At the moment." She repeated, hanging the question in the air.

He just shrugged, grinning a bit. "Like I said, it's a guy's dream— It's my dream to make yours come true." He said.

Sakura blushed. That was the closest she got from a confession, in the form of words, at least. And it seems it's more than a confession. It held something deeper.

She didn't know what to say or what to do, but the she was saved when the door suddenly opened and Mikoto-san came in with some snacks.

Sasuke had paused the DVD then, and helped his mother lay the food down on the floor. Both of them thanked her and after that, they returned to watching.

The moment was gone, but there was still something lingering in the air around them. But knowing Sasuke, Sakura knew that the conversation was over.

They didn't really finished the drama. After episode 9, they stopped watching because it was getting late.

As usual, Sasuke had offered to walk Sakura home, but there was something different this time.

After closing their gate, he had took her hand in his and they started walking, holding hands. This simple though meaningful gesture left Sakura pondering and at the same time, revelling. It was definitely not an unwelcomed change.

They reached her home too soon and she had to say goodbye to his touch.

"Thank you." She said as she faced him. She leaned in to plant a kiss on his cheeks.

He smiled, and for a while just looked at her.

Suddenly he sighed and his gaze changed, as if having just decided something.

"I..." He started. "I am not promising anything." He said, looking straight at her. Sakura knew at once what he was talking about. "As you said, I'm still nineteen and you're still eighteen. Let's see what I—we think about when we're already a little older." He said.

She laughed. She didn't really know what else to do. She felt surprised but mostly very giddy. It might not be much for other people, but coming from Uchiha Sasuke... that was something very big.

"Yeah, sure." She just told him, no better words presenting itself in her mind.

"And you know why, right? I never really thought about it before. I was always sure I'd be committed to my career. And I don't really know much about this. You know I never even realized it for years between us... Frankly I don't really know if I'm reliable enough... you know I always rely on others. I always rely on you. I—" Sakura blinked, looking at this new Uchiha Sasuke. Was he actually rambling? And blushing!

"I know." Sakura said, raising her hand to his cheeks to stop him from talking. She knew she was also blushing. She knew she was one of the few who can actually make Sasuke act like this and she felt proud. And she surely know the reason why that is so.

"Don't think about it too much just yet." She told him, laughing. And it seems some of the tension in the air evaporated.

He smiled and slowly he placed his arms around her and hugged her. "Well, I don't know if my views in life will ever change, but I'm sure my feelings won't." He said softly though in a casual tone.

"Same here." She said, honestly.

He stepped back and then grinned at me.

She thought that was it, but before he go, he dipped his lips in her, kissing her goodnight.

Notes:

-Proposal Daisakusen, is an early 2000s jdrama starring Yamashita Tomohisa and Nagasawa Masami. i think there's a kdrama remake, too (possibly called Operation Love). it's a wholesome drama ❤️
-i really think without trauma, whether in modern setting or in their verse, Sasuke would be this way. still quiet & reserved, still goal-oriented, but knows & accepts what he feels unapologetically
-i know most think Sakura is older coz she was born on March but i always thought she's younger since they're in the same class & their school year is from April to March. usually the youngest in a class are March babies. i used to follow these japanese class of celebrities (Horikoshi), their oldest are April 93 babies, youngest are March 94 babies 😊
