Work Text:
Giyuu picked up the bento box he had just bought and walked alone. A familiar bench landed among the Wisteria trees. The last time he was there, someone accompanied him.
Giyuu went to the bench and sat down. He opened the Bento box and broke his chopsticks.
With a sigh, Giyuu put a piece of Bento in his mouth. It was tasteless. For a long time everything was tasteless for him. Not that he couldn’t feel the Sweets or saltiness. He could feel them but again, the food didn’t have the taste it should've had. There was nothing for him to call delicious. Giyuu eats only because his body needs it.
Five weeks ago, the sunny hashira was sitting next to him, breaking the silence with his words. Kyojuro, a child of light, had removed the darkness of his mind for the first time in a long time, and Giyuu could hear things other than voices in his head.
"your art of swordsmanship is amazing, Giyuu !!"
Giyuu remembered well. They were sent on a mission together. The demon was apparently dangerous enough for the two of them to be sent together. And when their battle was over and the sun had just risen from the horizon, Kyojuro invited him to eat Bento.
Eating with Kyojuro was relaxing. Kyojuro kept talking, even though Giyuu only answered with a small "hmm" or just nodding.
Rengoku never made fun of him for his social skills, or He never pointed out his taciturnity and that made a sense of security in him.
When they reached the Wisteria trees and began to eat, the “tasty!” saying of Rengoku began to fill the environment. Rengoku ate with indescribable enthusiasm and shouted somewhat loudly.
Giyuu had seen him many times while eating, but he never understood why he couldn’t enjoy his food in silence like the others.
“amm… Rengoku…”
He looked at him with a smile. his smile was bright and warm. "Yes Giyuu!" How could someone do everything with enthusiasm! Even talking?? “can I ask... why do you always say ‘tasty’ when you eat ?!”
Rengoku laughed after a moment. His voice was warm and booming. "I hope I didn’t bother you with this, Giyuu!!"
Giyuu shivered a little. No, he ... he wasn’t bothered by it. Giyuu shook his head in response.
Rengoku continued with a smile. "You know it may sound funny, but I think when you say food is delicious, it tastes really better!!!" And then he laughed loudly again.
“hmm” Giyuu whispered under his breath. He couldn’t argue with his reasoning cause he never tried it. Rengoku was not over though. "Why don't you try it Giyuu!!!”
That day, Giyuu refused the request. But Kyojuro’s compliments about the food seemed to have an effect on the food. The food really tasted a little that day. It was delicious even!
After that meeting, the food started to taste little by little, but just when Giyuu was starting to enjoy it, the news of Rengoku's death was brought to him.
It is as if the world can never be friends with him. Whenever Giyuu thinks the situation is going to get better, the world has a new torment to give him. Rengoku left him alone too... just like everyone else who was good to him...
Rengoku was the only Hashira who spoke nicely to him ... he was the only person in their group who really had his back. Maybe someone who could call a friend...
... And now he was gone and again the food had no taste ... And again Giyuu was sitting alone, thinking of Kyojuro... someone who was too kind to stay in this cruel world for long.
He looked at his bento box. Didn’t know when he's stopped eating. Giyuu put a piece of Bento in his mouth with chopstick.
"delicious" food was still tasteless. Giyuu swallowed. He took Another bite. "Delicious" Giyuu’s heart ached. His chest was tightened. Another bite "Delicious!" The food was still tasteless. And this time, when Giyuu wanted to put another bite in his mouth, tears welled up in his eyes. His hand trembled. He squeezed the chopsticks in his hand. "Kyojuro..." tears began to flow from his eyes. "Kyojuro ..." his voice was broken like his tired heart. Tired of losing…
And that day a voice of a lonely man could be heard among the Wisteria trees, who was calling his fallen friend.
