And then Oda came along, and Dazai let go of the current, eventually letting the strong valiant waves strand him back onto the dry and bright lands, back at the beginning with no oxygen to carry on, only the memories buried deep in the ocean before him.
Dazai looks at the shiny weapon in his hand. His gaze soon trails towards the deep gash on his arm.
It felt good. The water is still. Maybe this time it will reach its end, and maybe this time he’ll be left satisfied.

Summary
Dazai sees Chuuya looking at a high school, unsure how he feels that he never got the chance to go since the Port Mafia hired tutors. Dazai, despite mocking him, sort of feels the same.
Which is how they end up on a high school rooftop in stolen uniforms, eating melon bread during class hours, and it’s the happiest either of them has been in a long time, even if neither of them will admit it.

“What, I know you or somethin’?” Chuuya asked.
Briefly, a look rushed over Dazai Osamu’s face— an emotion so quick, Chuuya couldn’t put a name to it. Then, his face mellowed out into a smile that had Chuuya itching for a fight; that screamed I think I’m the smartest person in the room, with just enough smugness and condescension to really rile him up.
“No,” Dazai said and looked weirdly vulnerable, like he was admitting some big secret. “No, you don’t.”
Or: the fight against the DOA ends badly for everyone involved. Now, the only person capable of ending everything before it even happens, would rather be dead and buried alongside his friends than deal with time travel of all things. Worse, when whatever adverse reaction No Longer Human had to the book has burned Dazai off the timeline as a whole.
