i need somebody

Summary:

Kara’s suiting up for her regular shift at the hospital when she gets a strange call from Alex. She frowns, puts on her Supergirl costume, and grabs her phone and keys as she walks out of her apartment.

Alex seems uncharacteristically nervous, reminiscent of all the times Eliza would ask them about something they weren’t supposed to be doing. They’re just exchanging pleasantries, and confirming lunch orders, when Alex gets paged to go back to work. Right before she says her customary goodbye, she asks Kara if she could help her out and stop by room 115 when she gets to the hospital.

It’s really not such a strange request. Kara dresses up as Supergirl and visits children at the hospital where her sister works as a doctor a couple times a week, when her schedule allows it. A lot of the kids ask for her, especially since the new Supergirl movie came out.

Notes:

Prompt: help

This is stretching the prompt a little, but I had this idea that I wanted to use, so I hope you enjoy regardless! I can't believe I only have one more day left!!

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Alex’s nervousness aside, there’s nothing out of the ordinary. So, she dresses in her usual Supergirl regalia and strides into the hospital, greeting nurses and doctors. She makes sure to be cheerful whenever she’s in her costume, just in case a kid sees her. She doesn’t want to crush any dreams.

When she arrives at room 115, she knocks at the door. It takes a little longer than normal, but after a few seconds, a husky voice calls out to come in.

The patient is not what Kara was expecting. Instead of a sickly kid, there’s a full grown adult in the bed. She stands at the door, staring for longer than is probably socially acceptable, but Kara’s never been good when she’s surprised.

“Do you have the wrong room? The children’s ward is down the hall,” the woman in the bed says. Her voice is throaty, like she’s not used to speaking, and her dark hair is slightly mussed. It’s clear that she’s been in hospital for a few days.

That kick starts Kara into moving. She gives the brunette a bright smile. “Nope! Alex told me you might need some super company!”

The woman purses her lips. “Doctor Danvers?”

“She’s my sister,” Kara tells her, “I’m Kara Danvers.”

She holds out her hand to shake. The woman eyes her suspiciously, but holds out her hand. Her hands are soft and smooth, but a little clammy.

Their hands drop after a few minutes, and Kara is at a loss of what to do. Normally, she’d just talk to the kids, maybe ask them about their day. But this woman is not a child, and she doesn’t look like the type to appreciate a visit from a costumed stranger.

“So…How is your day going?” Kara asks hesitantly. She doesn’t know what else to say, and it seems rude to leave now.

The woman raises an eyebrow. “I’m laying in a hospital bed, how do you think my day is going?”

Kara blushes. “Right.”

“Would you do me a favour?” the woman asks with a little sigh. She’s still looking at Kara intensely, and it’s making her a little nervous.

“Oh yes, anything,” Kara says, before reconsidering, “but you have to tell me your name first.”

“Mm,” the woman hums. She meets Kara’s eyes for a few seconds, and Kara gets lost in how green they are. “It’s Lena.”

“Lena,” Kara repeats. It’s a pretty name, but somehow, the way she had said it felt weighted. Alex has never talked about a Lena before, so Kara doesn’t think she works at the hospital.

“Now my favour. Can you pass me that tablet?” Lena says, pointing at a tablet on a chair in the corner.

Kara shrugs. She doesn’t know why Lena hadn’t asked a nurse to get it for her, but it’s simple enough. Lena gives her a grateful smile when she hands it to her, but her face creases when she powers it up.

“Missed a lot of notifications?” Kara asks conversationally. She thinks that she’ll just stay a few more minutes and then she can politely make up an excuse to leave.

“You have no idea,” Lena replies wryly. She doesn’t look up, typing out something on the device.

Kara fidgets with her cape. This is by far the most awkward visit she’s ever done, and she really just wants to leave. She doesn’t want to watch this woman work on her tablet, but Lena doesn’t seem to be interested in socialising.

Then she notices something.

“Whoa, is that an L-Corp tablet? How did you get one of those?” Kara exclaims. She’s been doing some research for an article, and apparently, they’re the best on the market right now.

Lena ducks her head. “Oh, yes. I got it from work.”

She says it a bit oddly, like she’s not telling the full truth, but Kara just brushes it off. It is a bit awkward to have a stranger around, so Lena probably just isn’t great with small talk.

“You must do something important if you’re still working while in the hospital,” Kara says.

That gets Lena to look up from her typing. She narrows her eyes at Kara, before giving her a shy smile. “I like to think my work is important.”

“I’m sure it is,” Kara responds sincerely. She may not know what Lena does, but she has a feeling that Lena works very hard and cares about it a great deal.

Lena is still looking at her, which is becoming a bit more uncomfortable. Lena is very pretty, and pretty girls make Kara nervous.

“So, what’s your favourite meal here? I like the pizza they serve on Fridays,” Kara says, trying to break some of the tension.

“I usually have a salad.”

“Lena! That’s no way to live. You can’t just live off of salads!” Kara protests.

“It’s healthy,” Lena responds, folding her arms.

“You can’t be healthy all the time,” Kara points out. She thinks about her weekly pizza nights and late night snacks.

“I absolutely can,” Lena says stubbornly. She’s giving Kara such an intense look that Kara thinks she would be scared if Lena was not laying in a hospital bed.

“What about snacks? What do you eat when you binge watch late night shows?”

“I have kale chips and sliced carrots for a snack if I have time,” Lena says matter of factly, “and I don’t watch movies.”

“Come on, you must watch some movies! What about a favourite comfort Disney film?” Kara asks. How can someone not watch any movies?

Lena looks a little embarrassed, but she still has a defiant glint in her eyes. She says evenly, “I’ve never seen a Disney movie.”

“You’ve never seen a Disney movie?” Kara gasps, “We have to fix that immediately! When you get out, you’re coming over for a movie night!”

Lena laughs, tilting her head to the side in an adorable manner. “Are you asking me out on a date, Kara Danvers?”

Kara blushes. That was definitely not how she meant it, but a date with Lena does sound wonderful. She’s beautiful and smart, and Kara feels like she can be herself around her.

“Yeah, I think I am,” she responds.

A slow smile makes its way onto Lena’s face. It’s the happiest Kara has seen her the whole time she’s been there, and it lights up her whole face.

“Let me give you my number, and we can arrange a time,” Lena says, holding out her hand for Kara’s phone.

After awkwardly fishing it out of the pocket in her tights, Kara hands it to her. Lena types into it quickly before handing it back.

“I’ll text you so you have my number,” Kara says, already halfway through sending a few emojis. She also adds a heart next to Lena’s name in her contacts.

Lena sends her a small smile that’s interrupted by a yawn. “

Kara frowns. “Maybe you should get some rest. I’m sure your body needs time to rest.”

“I suppose,” Lena says reluctantly. She’s pouting a bit, and it’s adorable.

Grinning, Kara takes her tablet and places it on her little side table so it’s still within Lena’s reach. She also tucks in the thin blankets a bit, trying not to fuss too much.

“Okay, I’d better be on my way then,” Kara says. She doesn’t want to leave, but now that she has Lena’s number, they can text when Lena feels more awake.

“Mm. I’m glad Dr. Danvers was trying to meddle. It was nice meeting you,” Lena says, her voice slurred with sleep.

She’s so cute that Kara looks at her for a few moments more, watching as she falls asleep. She smiles softly before leaving the room. Then, she walks quickly to the nurse’s station, and sweet talks the head nurse into paging her sister.

Alex must not be very busy, because she appears in a few minutes, looking confused.

“I thought you were in room 115?”

“Why did you send me there?” Kara asks curiously, “That was a grown woman; it could have been so awkward!”

“Well, I honestly thought that if anyone could brighten her day, it would be you,” Alex says apologetically.

“She was the most beautiful woman, Alex. And she had an L-Corp tablet! I’ve been trying to find one for ages after reading that article.”

Alex gives her a confused look. “Yeah, of course she has one. I can’t believe you gave that back to her! We’ve all been trying to get her to rest.”

“I didn’t know!” Kara pouts, “And I took it away after we talked because she was getting sleepy.”

“She actually told you she was tired?” Alex asks incredulously

“Well yeah. Is she not supposed to or something?”

“She’s never said anything that wasn’t an immediate concern in all the times she’s been here. She’s so stubborn, and if she’s not dying, she won’t talk to us.”

“How does she get away with that?” Kara asks. She knows from experience that if she tries to lie to her doctors, they’ll call her out. Especially her sister.

Alex shoots her a confused look again. “Um, she’s Lena Luthor? CEO of L-Corp? Basically owns this hospital?”

Kara gapes at her. “That was Lena Luthor!?”

“How did you know what a L-Corp tablet looked like, but not recognise Lena Luthor? I thought you said she introduced herself!”

“Oh my gosh,” Kara says faintly. Then, “Oh my gosh! I asked Lena Luthor out on a date!”
