Light Cinders

Summary:

“So tell me all about what happened.”

“Alya….”

“What? I’m curious!”

Marinette gave a small laugh shaking her head.

“Uh-uh. You want details for an article.”

“I want to know what happened to my best friend,” she denied. Marinette just looked at her, raising a brow, causing the reporter to laugh. “Fine. And get a bit of the inside details for an article.”

Dickinette Febraury Day 9 ~ News/Reporter

Work Text:

Marinette had barely managed to take two steps outside of the hospital before being practically tackled, barely managing to keep a hold of her bags.

“Girl! ARE YOU OKAY?”

“I’m fine. Alya. I’m fine. You didn’t need to come all the way from Metropolis to check on me.”

“Like Hell I didn’t! You were just in a fire! You and me are going to go get some food and then go back to the hotel. I brought the clothes you left at my place. We can go shopping tomorrow. Is there anything else you need?”

“A pit stop to pick up my burn cream prescription. And maybe stop at the hotel first so I can freshen up and drop off my bags.”

Alya’s eyes widened slightly as she looked at her friend. “Oh, Mari-”

“I wasn’t going to leave them to burn. I couldn’t do that to them.”

“You know that-”

“I’m going to get an earful when they hear about it? Yes. But-”

“I know, I know. You are too good, Girl.”

Marinette gave a soft, raspy laugh, stinging her throat. “Now can we get out of here? I’ve had an eventful few hours and I want food and a nap.”

“You got it.”

“You work for The Daily Planet . I doubt they’re going to be interested in a story about Gotham’s vigilantes.”

“Mari, hun. I don’t know if the fire has messed with your vision but everyone is interested when it comes to Nightwing. Gotham, Bludhaven, Metropolis division be damned. That man has the biggest fan club of any hero I can think of besides Wonder Woman.”

“Does he really?”

“Mhmm.”

“You know he was there when I woke up. In the hospital. Got me water and everything. Almost didn’t leave.”

“No.”

“Mhmm. Even made sure my bags and the box were safe and sound in my room. Nursed me back to health a little bit before I told him he should go back to helping others.”

“Why would you do that?”

“Because he could do more out there than in a hospital room with me when I was fine.”

“Only you, Marinette, would kick a hero out of their hospital room while they’re trying to provide support and care.”

“It’s called years of practice from you and Adrien.”

Alya laughed standing. “Fair point. You got me there. Smoothies?”

“Yes please! Make a bit extra.”

“You got it,” she said, disappearing into the kitchen, leaving Marinette to herself.

Marinette stretched, pushing herself off the couch and sliding open the sliding glass door and stepping out onto the hotel balcony, taking in the cool night air as she leaned on the balcony railing, looking out over the skyline.

She couldn’t help the small smile as she caught Nightwing flip down and land gently on the balcony next to her.

“What are the odds that I spot you after having you on my mind all day?”

She smiled as he asked this, giving a soft laugh. “Better than you can imagine.”

“Is that so?”

“I did tell you that Luck would be in your favor if you wanted to run into me again.”

“Looks like you were right.”

She smiled. “Luck does have her favorites. Would you like to come in for a quick smoothie?”

“I wouldn’t want to be in the way.”

“You saved my life. You wouldn’t be in the way. We were going to have extra anyway.”

“If you’re sure.”

She nodded as she started inside. “I insist,” She said, closing the sliding door behind the two of them before calling out to Alya to pour a third glass.

“Looks like your throat is doing better.”

“It is. Still a bit dry and itchy but better.”

“I’m glad. I’m sorry about all your things.”

“Don’t be. I got what was important. Everything else can be replaced.”

“I don’t think I’ve seen someone outside of the hero community as brave and reckless as you were.”

She choked back a laugh as he said that. ‘Outside of the Hero Community.’ Sure. She could go with that. She opened her mouth to reply when the small clink of glasses hitting each other served as a distraction.

“Something you want to tell me Mar?” Alya’s voice rang out, almost an octave higher as she froze in the kitchen door frame. “Like the fact that Nightwing is sitting on the couch ?”

“Would your reaction be any different?”

“Nope.”

“Then no. Nightwing, this is my best friend, Alya.”

“It’s an honor to meet you,” she said quickly, distributing the smoothies around and taking a sip of hers before leaning forwards. “So Nightwing-”

“Alya no,” Marinette cut her off, shooting a soft glare at her.

“Alya yes.”

“Alya. No.”

“Fineeee.”

“Thank you. Alya’s a reporter for The Daily Planet . She was either going to grill you for a story or attempt to give a shovel talk to you.”

“Slander against my good name.”

Nightwing laughed at the two small bickering, before interjecting and derailing the conversation completely. The three fell into an easy sort of banter as they drank their smoothies, before Nightwing made his excuses to get back to the patrol he was supposed to be doing. Marinette stood, walking him outside.

“What are the odds we’ll catch each other again?”

“As long as you feel so inclined to run into me, Luck will be in your favor.”

“You seem very confident in my Luck.”

She grinned, pressing a small kiss to his cheek. “Believe me when I say Luck and I go way back. I’m not opposed to the idea and so long as you aren’t, she’ll be in our corner.”

He raised a brow as she said that but she cut him off with a quick ‘don’t question it’ before he could say anything as she gave him a small push.

“Don’t you have places to be?”

“Alright, alright. See you again?”

“Until next time.”

She waved as he grappled off, turning to find a smug looking Alya with arms crossed.

“No.”

“Yes.”

She let out a soft lighthearted groan, letting her friend drag her inside to get all the details.
