You are Not my Hero

Summary:

There's a special kind of egoism to try and save someone without actually understanding why they do things. To try and claim that you want to save them without first considering the persons feelings is hubris. This can backfire and make things worst, Yoichi is no exception to this hubris.

Work Text:

His brother was coming to him again, it has been happening a lot and it was becoming irritating. His little brother was becoming pushy and constantly protesting against him. Even having the audacity to be trying to tell people that they will regret making deals with him.

As if he was a monster. His own brother was trying to make him into a fool. It was becoming clear that the other was going to cause him trouble but he still loves him. Despite everything all he wishes is for him to be safe and at his side-

But sadly things just can't ever go his way and his peace is interrupted.

"Is there a reason you're here?" All for One questions as can hear his little brother walking in. Yoichi's demeanor seemed different, Hisashi wonders if he was here to bitch at him again. After he 'switched' those two subordinates' abilities. They had asked for it and it was only fair to ask for a favor in return.

Tossing loose ends that are a threat is a natural progression and if they try to betray him it is only natural. If they are loyal then he won't harm them, it simple as that.

"I don't think I invited you to come to see me," Hisashi speaks casually as he was on his computer. Looking up data from this 'doctors' research that he has been contacting for a bit.

"Big brother... Why don't you just stop this? Aren't you tired of all of this?" Yoichi's voice was softer as if cautious with him. The behavior change was odd and Hisashi turns in his seat. Suddenly he was tense as there is a look of concern and somehow it made him recoil.

"Are you about to act all kind and sweet. Pretend that you love me in hopes I do what you want?" Hisashi speaks casually because the other not too long ago had been practically screaming at him. Protesting what he was doing and now acting like he is concerned. He doesn't buy it.

Yoichi's eyes widened a bit likely not expecting the other to say such a cruel thing so casually. Calling into question his very affection as a brother slowly opening his mouth to respond.

"Ah, I'm not interested. You've made it very clear many times that you are the one in the right while I am always in the wrong." Hisashi stated without a thought. Knowing the other probably looked down on him as just a criminal. Like how the government and common folk saw those with powers as freaks and demons.

His little brother had been trapped in a bubble because of his illness. Only exposure to the outside world the comics he would bring him to read. Those days seem so far off now.

"Hisashi, please. I understand that you're hurt, angry, upset at how you have been treated all your life. Maybe I was a bit harsh but I'm trying to help you because I love you." Yoichi speaks with a hand over his heart. Trying to show his sincerity toward the other. "I've always been on your side but you need to stop this. The bad guy never wins but you aren't the bad guy you're my older brother."

Hisashi has no idea what the other was trying to gain from this though it felt almost touching. Actually turning to look at the other expression that seemed softer. Almost affectionate even as his little brother holds his hand out toward him.

   "I can help you."

Then it clicked. It hit Hisashi like ice-cold water as realized the other was acting like those heroes in a comic book. The other was trying to save him despite the fact he already doing all of this. Despite how long the other did nothing while he had to do everything.

And he laughed with a crooked smile as it just came out. Not from joy but because it felt a kind of sick amusement.  A hero? A Hero like in those comic books?

"You think you're a hero?! Is that what this is about?" Hisashi questioned as he got up onto his feet. Watching his little brother's eyes bug out startled by the sudden action. Hisashi walks toward his brother and moves a hand to touch the other's hair taking a few strands.

"Did saving a few people get that thought in your head? Did they praise you as some stoic and handsome savior? Oh I'm sure that you look absolutely HEROIC next to your monster of an older brother," he barks with a painful laugh. Because somehow hearing the other say that meant only one thing.

The other was looking down on him as some villain. A criminal and some victim that needed to be saved. When for the longest time had been content to stay on the sidelines. Moving behind his little brother he moves his hands on the shoulders of the other just to hammer home the absurdity.

"You're not a monster! I know you never wanted it to get this far or to become this. You've been hurt but you can always change as underneath you have a heart-" Yoichi spoke but Hisashi wasn't about to hear it.

"I do not." Hisashi did not look his brother in the eye when said that as looked away. Feeling frustrated and almost ill at the fact the other was choosing now to talk about this. His little brother must want something from him and was trying to fuck with him now.

"If you're a hero, then why weren't you able to help that man who was thrown out of his home because of his terrifying power? The man who was mugged by those with powers? The men shot because they couldn't control it?" Hisashi began to list all the atrocities he has seen. Not even because of his actions in fact he usually offers them at least a chance.

At least he is honest that he wants something out of it, unlike those so-called heroes.

"Hisashi that isn't my fault-" Yoichi speaks up about to try and speak but  he  wasn't done.

"Where were you when they treated me cruelly and wanted me dead? They wanted a monster and that is what I became because it is all I CAN be!" Hisashi sneers and that shuts him up. "You know NOTHING about me even though you are my little brother. You lived in your little bubble and maybe that was the mistake I made. You never came to save my world, because I was too busy keeping you alive while you fussed at my 'methods'."

His little brother looked so pained as if he finally realized that he had chosen the wrong thing to say. It felt like the conversation was about to end and that is where it should be. Then his little brother just couldn't stop himself, "what about us? I know they did you wrong but-"

"Do NOT talk as if you know me. The more you talk the more I realize you will never understand me." Hisashi wanted this conversation to end as the more they talked the more he realizes his brother twisted. Trying to somehow make everything better as if can just put a bow on it. Stop? Did he truly think he could just stop and go back now?

"Please Hisashi, you need to stop. You're only going to hurt yourself, in the end, listen to me! You're not the bad guy," Yoichi shouted. Still trying to 'save' him when there is nothing he can do to save him. He was powerless, weak, unaware of the true monsters that hide outside these walls. Yet he was trying to be his hero despite the fact Hisashi was the older brother.

The younger male was walking toward him with an outreached hand as if about to grab him. Suddenly Hisashi felt something like apprehension as the other was ignoring his words.

"I'm just trying to help you. Let me help you!" Yochi shouts and Hisashi finally smacks him away hard feeling himself shake with rage. Not feeling anything when his brother had fell to the floor in shock. Moving a hand to touch his cheek in pain seeming stunned while Hisashi can't feel himself care.

"You are not my hero." Those words are said coldly as he stares down at his little brother. His little brother can't save him, and he won't give him any illusions that he can do so. "You can't rewrite the narrative society already made of me. Stop painting me as a victim when I am already past the point of no return."

It was too late. He needed to commit to this role completely because there was no turning back. If the other had been in his position he would understand it too late. That there was no salvation for a demon like him and that all he can do is pursue his ambition. To try and mold the world in a way that would benefit himself or die trying.

Slowly it began to register that his little brother had tears in his eyes as stared up at him. Most likely the other only remembers a little boy that clung to him as if terrified of losing him. Who would curl up holding his hand promising they will always be together.

"Hisashi..." The other's voice was a quiet plea full of aches and pain but it was unfair. Yoichi can't ever understand him or why he has to commit to everything. The world he envisions, the society he desires, it isn't something he can just drop. There was no turning back.

"...Someone as weak as you can't possibly hope to follow through on your ideals." Hisashi speaks softly and it wasn't like he hated Yoichi's ideals. He admired it, but he was never fated to be a hero or the good guy.

A monster is what he is and it is all he will ever be yet the other naively thought he was saveable. He rather not have such thoughts weighing him down when he pursues something much grander than simple pleasures.

Notes:

You can in a sense consider this a kind of prequel to Isolation. Since this is prior to any vaulting but I always considered the fact that Yoichi wasn't truly a hero prior to joining the rebels.

If he was sickly then he likely had to rely on his brother, so can only imagine how offended Hisashi would be if his little brother that had to rely on him treated him as such. As Yoichi treating it like he can 'save' him when has no such ability is truly the height of ego.

Might as well credit the lovely video that gave me this idea. Hero/Villain Duet featuring Yoichi and All for One~
