Fresh is Always Best

Summary:

Dating doesn’t come simply for Light, but when he met this amazing girl, he found the right one. She just fits into his life. She is the only person he truly enjoys the simple things with.

Notes:

I’ve set myself a task/challenge this year to write a cute birthday date prompt for the characters I love of several different series I love.

(See the end of the work for more notes.)

Work Text:

Looking over at the young woman carefully examining the oranges on display in the stall they were standing in had Light smiling. She raised one and sniffed it smiling as she did before placing it in the basket on her arm. She looked at the owner of the stall who was busy putting more lemons onto that display palate.

“They’re even heavier than last year, Mr. Saito.” She complimented, knowing the owner of this stall well, she came here every other weekend after all, “Perfect for juicing, are they as sweet as last year?”

The older man turned and smiled at her, “They’re even sweeter, (Name).” He said, “My son Kaitaro has been tending to the orange trees almost religiously this year.”

She laughed and added a few more to her basket at his words.

“I love fresh orange juice every morning.” She said simply, “Light here does, too.” She motioned over to her brunette boyfriend.

Mr. Saito chuckled, “That’s what my wife always does. Every morning she squeezes juice for the whole family. They produce two glasses a piece they’re so juicy this year.”

She grinned, “Fresh is always best.” She laughed, repeating the words painted on the sign which sat at the entrance of the large farmers market near the university she and Light attended.

Light smiled and shook his head at how cute she was. Far too cute for the life he secretly led.

“How are the lemons?” She asked, “Seems to be a run on them.”

Light watches as his girlfriend talked to the stall owner and loaded her basket with more fruit, citrus being the specialty of this stall, and (Name) adored citrus fruit.

After they paid walked out of the stall (Name) laced her fingers with Light’s, “I’m thinking of making carrot kinpira with the tonketsu tonight.” She said, “Mrs. Kobayashi had those great looking ones, remember?”

“Yeah, you bought about ten of them.” He chuckled, “You love carrots just about as much as you love those citrus fruits.”

She laughed and shook her head, “I can’t help it.” She said, “I love fresh produce...and this is the best farmers market in the city.”

He smiled at her and nodded, he remembered showing it to her shortly after they met. She had grown up in the country on a small family farm. They didn’t sell things, it was self-sustaining. She had grown up with fresh produce every day...and had missed it when she started college.

She looked at him and smiled sweetly, “I love you, Light.” She murmured.

He smiled down at her, “I love you too, (Name).” He said.

They now went to this market together every weekend to stock up on fresh produce for the apartment they shared just off of campus. Even on his birthday.

She leaned up and kissed just below his ear to purr to him, “So, do you even want a cake? Or just the frosting on me?” She teased loving the way her soft and rather crass murmur made the usually so well composed Light Yagami to blush.

But he was able to throw it right back. “Just the frosting,” He purred.

She laughed and kissed his cheek once more. She didn’t need to ask. It’s what he always wanted. She would make extra. She always made her frosting homemade and fresh.

Fresh is always best, after all.

Notes:

The next birthday post will be tomorrow March 1st for Mitsukuni “Hunny” Haninozuka from Ouran High School Host Club. His actual birthday is February 29 so I had to pick when to post it along with the other two characters that fit in on this day. Lol.
