Work Text:
They had met through Haruhi a couple years prior. The young lady was Haruhi’s half-Japanese half-American cousin by marriage and had been traveling with her family, her father being in the U.S. military, most of her life. And she had been sent to Japan for a school year or two by her Japanese mother who was a respected doctor, Haruhi’s dad’s sister, to have some stability for her final school years. She lived in her own apartment next door to Haruhi’s family and spent a lot of time with them.
Haruhi had been talking to the Host Club about this mysterious cousin since the day she and her father got the letter about her moving. She was excited, she had souvenirs from all over the world from the young woman sitting on the bookshelf in her bedroom. She wrote back and forth with her all the time and they talked on the phone on special occasions every year. She considered (Name) her closest companion.
The rest of the club was excited and curious about this young woman. Who would be transferring to Ouran, not because of money, she was on a scholarship similar to Haruhi, but was accepted because her father was military (U.S. or not didn’t matter here) and her mother’s medical degree helped...along with the fact that it would look good on the school to seem as good as it was on an international scale. She was also a straight A student in spite of her constant moving...so...she’d reflect well on the school.
And the first day she arrived at school Hunny was struck. She was taller than him, but most people he knew were so that didn’t matter, her (h/c) hair bounced as she walked, her (e/c) eyes shone with mischief, and she smiled so beautifully. He had never felt a true attraction for someone before. And when they were introduced and he heard her sweet voice flowing into his soul he knew he would never be the same.
Nobody else seemed to notice how struck he was. Takashi obviously did...and he was pretty sure Haruhi could tell. Every time they were all together the pair of them always seemed to end up together somehow.
And before too long they were dating.
It was still funny how it happened...they were talking separately from everyone one day and she slipped up saying she thought he was really cute. She was so embarrassed to admit that to him, afraid he’d think she was weird or something. But instead he laughed and in the softer voice she’d ever heard him use asked her if she wanted to have dinner sometime.
They had been dating ever since. Everyone in the Host Club was stunned that he was so taken with her when he’d never been taken with anyone before. And that she was able to deal with being kinda on the down low about their dating due to his Host Club duties. She didn't want the drama.
—
Tomorrow was his birthday (or rather the day selected for it due to him being born on a leap year) and she knew that not only was his family planning a huge event for him that weekend, the Host Club was planning two, one at school on his birthday as a club, and one that Friday as friends. And she knew that she wouldn’t get a private date with him if she didn’t plan well.
So today she had convinced him to celebrate privately with her after school. He wasn’t hard to convince, the other members were confused as she wanted to steal him away directly after school, making him unable to be at his post in the Host Club that afternoon. But they easily relented when she explained that she wanted to have a birthday date with him and with all the celebrations on and after his birthday basically meant that today was her only shot.
She smiled as they made their way down the street from where his family’s limo had driven them to the large building which housed her plans. It was a simple thing, but also something he had never done, and wasn’t usually a Host Club type of place. She’d told him her idea and he was all for it.
But would he like Go Karting as much as she did?
She paid their entrance fee and they went to get ready. She loved to see Hunny in casual clothes and she giggled as he put on his helmet while they got into their cars.
“I won’t go easy on you.” She teased.
“I don’t want you too. It’s no fun when a win is given to you.” He laughed.
And as their first race started she was reminded of the numerous times she had been with her parents. This was their favorite family time activity. Her Dad didn’t always have weekends off, so when he did they would go Go Karting and then out for ice cream. And always for her birthday since she was eight. It was an activity she associated with pure, unbridled joy.
Apparently she had been so excited when she was talking to Hunny about those weekends that when she jokingly suggested it as a fun date he had readily agreed. He wanted to join her on favorite tradition.
And after their first race, which she easily won, she could feel the joy filling her and the grin on Hunny’s face told her he was having fun too.
They raced for hours and he managed to win a few and she was as happy when he won as when she did. And after they were tired out they got the print outs of their stats for their races that afternoon then left. It was time for ice cream.
And as they sat in the ice cream parlor splitting a sundae she smiled at him.
“Did you have fun?” She asked.
“Yes!” Hunny said with a smile, “It was really fun! So different than anything I’ve ever done for my birthday, but I liked it a lot.”
“Maybe because it’s so different is why you liked it so much.” She joked.
He nodded, “I think you’re right.” He laughed.
She smiled and leaned in, pecking his lips. He smiled wider, his cheeks on fire like every time she kissed him.
“Happy birthday, I love you Mitsukuni.” She said, whenever she was being truly serious she used his real first name for emphasis.
He smiled, “Thank you. I love you too (Name).” He said with a grin.
Sometimes different and simple is the most fun.
