Kissing Things

Work Text:

Morgan moves far too quiet, which is why Alex doesn’t notice them until it’s almost too late. Their arm darts out from behind Alex and they only just manage to grab Morgan’s wrist before they can snatch the prison from the middle of the coffee table.

“Alex, it’s not funny.”

“It’s a little funny,” Alex counters.

“Well…”

Morgan frowns, and Alex just knows they’re trying hard not to agree. They push it, Alex never learned when to stop and nobody but Morgan could make them even want to. “If it’s that important, how about a little game? One little game and then I will surrender Minimum to you.”

“I’m listening.” Morgan crosses their arms.

Alex gestures magnanimously at the couch across from them. Morgan takes their seat, tilts their head to eye Alex speculatively. They tidy the various abandoned pens and nail clippers cluttering the coffee table, and dig out the deck of cards that lives in the basket of miscellaneous odds and ends. “What are you thinking, five card draw? Blackjack? Texas hold ‘em?”

Alex almost forgets to answer, watching Morgan’s all too dexterous hands riffle the cards together. There’s still a scratch healing on the back of their right hand from what Morgan insists was a not at all ill-advised attempt at setting up a three door puzzle for their nemesis, with a hungry lion behind one of the doors.

Morgan thumps the deck, the sound drawing Alex’s attention away from their hands. “Come on, name the game. Cribbage? Pinochle?”

“Nope.” Alex can’t help but smirk a little. “Not a card game.”

“We’re not playing knife monopoly again.” Morgan gestures at the grooves in the table, a memento of the last time they played that game. “You’re still banned from knives in the living room.”

“I don’t want to play knife monopoly again.” Morgan looks skeptical, which is awful because Alex actually does mean it. Alex leans in, tugs the cards away from Morgan and sets them aside. The center of the table is clear apart from Minimum, Alex’s new favourite toy. They can’t - don’t want to - resist running the razor sharp tip of one nail down the side of it. “Would you like to keep guessing, or do you want me to tell you what I want to play with you?”

“If I have to keep guessing, then you’re definitely losing Minimum before we play.” Morgan reaches for it again, frowning sharply when Alex pulls it away.

“No!” Alex holds up the little cylinder. “We need this to play the game.”

“Alex…”

Alex sits up a little straighter, meets Morgan’s eyes. “We are playing…” They watch Morgan closer than they ever have before. It’s life or death, and only a little because if this goes badly then Alex will make sure everyone in Minimum dies miserably. “A little game called- Spin the bottle. Well, I guess it’s actually Spin the Min.” They twirl the prison in their fingers for emphasis.

“Spin the-” Morgan sighs. “Okay. Spin the Min. You do know you need more than two people to play spin the bottle, right?”

“If you’d prefer, I can just clear out and take Min with me?” Alex hooks a thumb over their shoulder.

“No, I’ll play.” Morgan’s eyes narrow with determination. “I’ll play so hard you won’t know what hit you.”

Alex’s smirk returns. “Excellent choice. I’ll go first.”

Alex sets Minimum on its side, ignoring the microscopic sounds of the villains within screaming at their world being turned on edge. With a flick of their wrist, they set the prison in motion.

The spin is so fast, at first it’s just a blur even to Alex’s eyes. Morgan raises their eyebrows. “Interesting technique.”

They both sit there intently, watching as Minimum’s spin slows to the point Alex can see it clearly, then to the point Morgan can see it clearly. It must be minutes before it really slows to its final spin.

The prison comes to a stop pointed right back at Alex.

Alex scowls at it, scowling harder as Morgan bursts into laughter.

“Before today I would have said it’s impossible to lose at spin the bottle.” Morgan looks from Alex to the prison and back to Alex. “Yet again, your powers are unmatched.”

“Fuck you, it’s harder than it looks.”

Morgan’s eyes light up. “Let a master show you how it’s done.” They reach out and set Minimum back in motion. Their spin is nowhere near as powerful as Alex’s, but Alex can’t gloat. They can’t take their eyes off the spinning prison, can hardly even breathe.

Minimum slows to a stop, pointed directly at Alex. Distantly they notice their mouth has gone dry, but the majority of their existence is intent on Morgan, on how Morgan is leaning across the coffee table.

Their lips press against Alex’s. Firm. It’s not perfunctory, not dismissive, but it’s still all too brief and Alex is left bereft as Morgan leans back out of their space.

“Lucky spin,” they manage after a beat too long.

“It’s not luck.” Morgan’s hand is back on Minimum, but they’re not picking it up yet. Alex doesn’t know what’s stopping them, they won.

“Oh?”

Morgan tilts their head, eyeing Alex. “You don’t know how to rig spin the bottle?”

“What?” Alex doesn’t know how to rig spin the bottle, not without their powers. They’ve never played spin the bottle before, but admitting as much right now would feel like losing again.

“Yeah, it used to come in super handy.” Morgan keeps looking at them and Alex knows their face is reddening against their will. “I can prove it. Move somewhere else, I’ll get it to land on you again.” They wink at Alex.

Alex shuffles to the left. They can’t not; if Morgan’s right then they’ll get kissed again.

This time Alex would swear it’s even faster, the brief moment of watching the prison spin before it comes to a stop pointed directly at them again.

Alex meets Morgan partway, leaning across the table with one arm bracing themself because against all odds Alex feels a little unsteady.

The kiss is still far too brief, but the tip of Morgan’s tongue presses against Alex’s lips before they pull back and that moment lingers, even looms, as Alex slowly withdraws back to their own space.

“I think,” Morgan says, licking their lips. “I think I should show you again. Just so you know I’m not lying about rigging the game.”

Alex nods and moves again. This time they leave the couch, kneeling at the side of the coffee table. They don’t watch the prison this time, their attention utterly consumed by Morgan. Morgan’s deft fingers set Minimum in motion.

Alex doesn’t even look to see how the bottle landed, they just focus on Morgan, the satisfied chuckle, and the warmth of sharing space with them again.

Alex’s eyes fall shut as Morgan’s thumb grazes their jaw. Morgan’s tongue is back, this time more than a brief tease. Alex lets themself touch, puts an arm around Morgan’s waist to draw them even closer.

“You could have just told me,” Morgan murmurs against Alex’s lips between kisses.

“Hm?” Alex helps Morgan straddle their lap.

“I would have said yes.” Morgan draws back and Alex whimpers. “You don’t need to threaten the lives of thousands to make me want to kiss you.”

“But it’s hot that I did?” Alex suggests, trailing their fingers along Morgan’s side. Morgan grinds against them.

“Damn you, yes,” Morgan admits. “But don’t do it again.” Their mouth covers Alex’s before Alex can answer.

Alex doesn’t need to answer anyway. They both know when it matters, Alex will give Morgan whatever they ask for.

Notes:

Title from the song Kissing Things by The 6ths. Solely so I can tell you that the lyrics include “I’ve been kissing the mirror, wishing it was you” because this fandom deserves that lyric. Like the song as a whole is absolutely on my “songs for dying alone in the rain of a broken heart” playlist, don’t get me wrong, but that line holds new delight for me.

Voice of experience: losing at two person spin the bottle is just frustrating. So so frustrating and not a little annoying. I tried so many times and anyway I had to go to work before I succeeded so no kissing happened the one time I attempted to play spin the bottle.
