    Summary

After finding a torn comic in the trash when told to clean Dudley’s room, four year old Harry Potter puts it together with some odd things that have happened around him, and concludes that he’s the Avatar.

    - Not a crossover so much as a fic in which Harry Potter is convinced that Avatar: The Last Airbender is a historical documentary.

littlebastardreviews posted the collected facts from the 2014 UK Editions of Harry Potter: and this fact caught my eye.

'Only one non-magical person has ever managed to get as far as the Hogwarts Sorting Hat before being exposed as a Squib.'

But, gosh it just makes me want a story where a squib did make it through. So here's a drabble about a squib with a quick mind and a hand-me-down wand, who refuses to be denied her birthright.

    --

when the hat drops over her eyes it asks, 'well what do we have here?'

    she’s got a forged hogwarts letter with penmanship that’s perfect down to the ink splatter;

she’s got a complicated string of owls, only half of them forged, from parents to administration to ministry that’s so complicated her name ended up on the first year roll call anyway.

she’s got ten arguments, four pleas, and one smothered threat on the tip of her mental tongue for why the house that comes out of this hat’s brim better not be 'squib'

she’s got a lighter up her sleeve and an eight and a half inch wand in her belt that will never, ever work for her.

'well,' says the hat, 'better be slytherin then'

    Summary

When Petunia Dursley refused to take Harry in she forfeited his birthright protection, so Dumbledore took the baby to the safest place he knew: Hogwarts.

The applicable staff (mostly just… not Snape) took Harry in on a rotating schedule as he grew from baby to toddler to child. They traded extra credit for babysitting among the older students, and Harry grew up knowing a few dozen different laps that were safe and warm to nap in.

This was a Harry who grew up among books, among old transient walls and learned professors. They gave Binns night duty sometimes, and let him talk young Harry to sleep. This was a Harry whose world changed, on principle, daily. The stairs moved. The walls became doors. You had to keep your eyes open–you had to pay attention. So he did.

He grew up in a school. Knowledge was power, but knowledge was also joy. This was his sanctuary. There was magic in his world from birth.

Harry Potter is adopted by a retired chemistry professor causing him to become an accidental potions prodigy. Navigating the world of wizards with a strong home base allows Harry to ask important questions like, 'why don't we learn math?' and 'why hasn't everyone read Hogwarts: A History?' and most importantly, 'Why does everyone treat squibs so terribly?"

    Bookmarker's Notes

Stellar writing and worldbuilding. The slowly rising dread I felt with each chapter as Lyra is introduced and grows up gave me chills.

The rest of the story, outside of the Lyra sections, is also solidly interesting but much less angsty. What happens to her in part 1 is balanced by what happens to Argus in part two.

The narrative weaves between its various elements and points of view in a way that feels like a perfectly flavored meal; lots of flavors, but no one thing overwhelming the taste of the rest, and everything plays off each other beautifully.

Left off after Chapter 23. Will come back to read part three when it’s done.
