We Were Victims Of The Night

Summary:

Marc notices his boyfriend is missing while they're at a school dance.

Notes:

Title from Shut Up and Dance by WALK THE MOON

Work Text:

Marc laughed along with his friends, idly swaying side to side in time with the music blaring all around them. The school had hosted a dance to celebrate the fact that the building was still standing even after all the akumas spawned from its insides.

He glanced around, trying to find a certain someone but being unable to. Although, knowing about his personality definitely helped when trying to figure out where he went. Marc separated from his friends, ducking through the crowd until he reached the table where all the food and drinks were set up. He grabbed two sodas, dodging dancing students as he approached the doors leading to the outside.

Marc pushed them open, stepping out, letting it close behind him. On the stairs, Nathaniel turned around from where he was scrolling on his phone. The writer walks over to his boyfriend, handing him one of the cans and quietly saying, "I noticed you weren't inside."

Nathaniel chuckled, accepted the drink and opening it, "That's a surprise. Usually nobody notices when I leave the group."

Marc sat down beside the artist, casually interlocking their fingers. He didn't try to convince him to go back inside. It's obvious to him that Nathaniel would feel overwhelmed and crowded with that many people. Hell, Marc was starting to feel those same things too.

Nathaniel just scooted closer and placed his head on Marc's shoulder with a little murmur of "Thanks." Marc just squeezed his hand, rubbing his thumb over it.

It really was peaceful out here. Night had fallen upon the city and the street was quiet, not a car passing by. Marc perked up a little upon hearing the music inside change its melody to a slow dance. He turned around to his boyfriend with a soft smile, holding out his hand in a nonverbal offer.

Nathaniel looked at him for a moment, cheeks burning bright red, before he mumbled out that he doesn't know how to dance, head tilting forward and hair falling in front of his eyes.

Marc just leaned forward, using his free hand to brush Nathaniel's bangs behind his ear, "That's not what I care about. I just want it to be with you." His hand drifted down to cup the redhead's cheek in his hand.

Nathaniel stared at him in awe for a couple of seconds, before standing up, walking over to the area of the entrance with a flat floor. Marc watched him, a little confused why he was heading towards that area. The redhead blushed, looking away and muttering, "You're the one who offered, right?"

Marc beamed, getting up and quickly skipping over to him. Nathaniel visibly hesitated when he got close enough, not knowing what to do with their positioning, so Marc didn't wait long before he placed his hand on his boyfriend's waist, silently guiding Nathaniel to place his arms around Marc's shoulders.

"I'll guide you."

The two danced with each other, gliding around the empty space for as long as the song played, giggling when one of them misstepped or the one moment where they almost toppled over. The entire thing was messy and unrefined, but it was a dance with the two of them, and that was all that mattered.

As the song reached its end, Nath rested his head on Marc's shoulder, eyes falling closed with how relaxed he felt, unconsciously pulling the writer closer in a tight embrace.

"I love you."

Marc stammered, flustered and unsure how to respond. Nathaniel's laughter rang out, bright and clear, right beside his ear. At last, Marc finally hugged the artist tight, gazing off into the night sky, stars twinkling above them acting as their light.

"I love you too."
