Work Text:
Set 60 years earlier, we look back at the friendship between Penelope and Eloise, or PenEloise, as they are called by those that know and love them well. They are always together and looking to get into mischief of some sort.
Our favorite wallflower has always been dressed in yellow by her well meaning mum, much to her dismay. This "happy" color has yet to bring our beautiful wallflower any prospects in the marriage mart, and yet, bright and sunny as it is, has somehow helped her to fade into the background, except in the eyes of the Bridgertons, in particular, Eloise and Colin Bridgerton, who always seek her out at balls.
On this particular Wednesday afternoon, as PenEloise are taking tea in the Featherington drawing room, they are discussing that evening's ball at Bridgerton House.
[To be sung to the tune of "We don't talk about Bruno"]

We never wear yellow, no no no
We never wear yellow
BUT
There was another ball
(A Bridgerton ball)
We were minding our own and talking
(We are conversing right now)
My mother came in and gave me a grin
(OH NO)
[width="25"]That yellow dress was coming out
(I'm sorry Pen, so loonnnng)
My mother stuffed me in,
(Why does she insist?)
That dress that looks like Homer J. Simpson
(Whoever that is)
I was aghast, but I had to comply
We never wear yellow, no no no
We never wear yellow
I grew up always swearing when wearing
That yellow dress that I wished would I could bury
I hated looking like a giant bee, shh, shh, shh
Why would my mom pick this?
Doesn't she know I resent this?
Why can't I wear pink?
Why?
Bright yellow frame, eyes stare at my back
When they call my name, Eloise comes back
She knows they're mean, and so she distracts me
Who is Lady Whistledown?
We never wear yellow, no no no
We never wear yellow
Eloise said to come with her, for a surprise she had
(Oh my)
I followed her up the stairs, curiosity in my head
(Hmm, hmm?)
When we were alone, she pulled out a pink dress
(Oh yes!)
We never wear yellow, no no no
But on Wednesdays, we wear pink 😉

And from across the room, our Wallflower was spotted by her favorite dance partner, Colin, who made his way quickly to her side.
"Pen, were you not wearing a yellow dress just now?" Colin asked with a curious grin.
"Of course not, Colin, it's Wednesday, and on Wednesday, we wear pink." She said with a smirk. She had noticed his pink waistcoat this evening and nodded her approval.
"I am not certain what game you and my sister are playing at this evening," Colin bemused, "but I am quite certain that you were not wearing that particular shade earlier this evening. I would have noticed, it is rather fetching. I shall see you around, Pen."
And at that, Colin walked away, leaving Penelope with her heart racing and tongue stuck in her throat. Did Colin Bridgerton just say he noticed me?
"Come along, Pen!" Eloise said, oblivious to the previous interaction and her friend's reaction, as she grabbed her arm and dragged her to the other side of the ballroom.
