Chapter 1: Prologue

Chapter Text

Carina huffed after she set down her last bag on the floor of her new room. Silently she cursed her father for making her carry all of her bags inside on her own. The moment Vincenzo dropped her off he rushed across the lake to the boys boarding school - Sloan Academy she thinks it’s called - to help Andrea unpack.

Deciding to unpack later, Carina glanced around the room. It was small and modest. Two twin sized beds on either end of the room, a bedside table for each and two dressers against the back wall. It was a bit spacious at least. She couldn’t really complain, in Italy she had went to a public school per her mothers decision.

Carina frowned at the thought of her mother, the hurt was still fresh in her heart. It had only been a year, her father had been getting worse and decided that moving to America would be the next best step. Though the boarding schools had always been a favorable choice for Vincenzo, they were Carina’s idea upon moving - more so to get Andrea away from their father.

Clearing her throat, Carina grabbed the large suitcase atop her bed and began to unzip it. “Dad I’ve been here for over two years now. I’ll be fine, go help Mason.”

Carina turned her head to the doorway to see who was talking, but when an older man gave her a stern glance she turned back to her bag. Grabbing the piles of her folded out clothes and setting them out on the bed, one of which were the required uniforms her dad practically out bought.

“Your mothers with him, besides I need to update Coach Beckett on your new regimen.” Carina side glanced back to the doorway and now she could see some blonde hair in a ponytail. “I know track season isn’t for a few more months but I still want you training everyday.” He added on, she saw the ponytail sway side to side as the girl nodded her head.

There were a few more words she caught before he left; ‘unpack’, ‘orientation’, ‘morning’. Carina tried not to ease drop too much, it’s hard to help sometimes though.

“Sorry.” The girl muttered, almost embarrassed. Carina turned her body to face her, a confused look gracing her features as if she didn’t know what she was talking about.

The two stared for a moment, Carina’s eyes ran up and down the girls body and it wasn’t lost on the Italian as she other woman did the same thing. With a deep inhale, the blonde stepped forward.

”I’m Maya by the way.” She stuck a hand out, which Carina quickly took “Carina.”

Maya raised an eyebrow when she noticed the accent, but decided not to comment on it as she just turned to unpack her own things. “So, uh, you’re new here?”

Si, I moved from Italia a few months ago.” Maya hummed, and an awkward silence fell over them both. “Do you like it so far?”

”Eh, has its sky’s and grounds.”

“High and lows.”

”Your language can be very difficult.” Carina claimed, grabbing a pile of the clothes she took out and walked them over to her dresser. Maya put her hands up in mock defense and nodded her head in agreement.

Maya slowed down in the hallway after orientation was finished in the auditorium. She told Andy and Vic to go to the cafeteria and save her a seat, telling them she’d catch up with them.

She liked Carina, they made some small talk before orientation and she seemed nice enough. Maya was hoping Carina wouldn’t be like her last roommate - JJ - who was overall extremely frustrating to live with. Especially because before she left the school, JJ just had to pull some big elaborate prank that resulted in the both of them getting in trouble since they were roomed together.

Maya did not need another situation like that, her summer was complete hell because of it.

“You can sit with me if you want.” She offered the second Carina got close enough to her. Her roommate seemed relieved at the offer, accepting it graciously.

It wasn’t an ulterior motive as much as it was Maya simply just liking Carina. She wants them to get along, because if you can get along with your roommate well enough then the rest of the year will be a breeze.

“You must be the new roommate, I’m Andy.” Andy waved to Carina as she sat down at the table. She introduced herself to both Andy and Vic, it was a smaller group compared to the others at the school but they were pretty close.

Vic and Andy were roommates, have been since freshman year. Maya had met Vic first, they did track together, but she got closer to Andy.

“What sport are you doing?” Vic asked, the school was pretty popular for its sports programs. It’s the only reason Maya’s dad would ever let her go without his supervision. Once being accepted, you were required to choose a sport to do.

Futball - soccer.” Andy hummed excitedly, her mouth full with the banana she was eating, and pointed to herself. Trying to say ‘me too!’ with a closed mouth.

Dinner was fun, it didn’t last as long as any of them wanted it to. Carina seemed to get along well with Maya’s friends, which was even better. Andy and Vic left once they were dismissed to go back to their rooms for lights out, but Maya decided to walk the long way to show her roommate around the school.

Grazie.” Carina said when they arrived to their room. “You did not have to invite me to join you for dinner.” Maya opened the door, holding it for Carina to walk in first before shutting it behind the two of them.

”I know, but I wanted to.” Maya smiled. Carina didn’t reply, she turned her back and started grabbing her pajamas. Maya did the same, the two of them facing the wall as they changed. Carina knew Americans could be a bit more prude - compared to Italy with its topless beaches - but she was glad it seemed like more of an unspoken rule to not cross that boundary.

Carina practically dove into bed, ready to get rest after such a long and stressful day. Maya was the one to walk over and turn the light off before getting into her own bed. The only noise was the small bedside fan Maya had running, though Carina would guess it was just for the noise because there was no way it was hitting her at all.

“Maya,” She muttered, breaking the short-lived silence between the two. Maya hummed as a response. “Goodnight.”

For a moment, Maya didn’t know what to say back. She stared up at the ceiling, letting the silence run for a bit longer before finally giving a quiet reply.

“Night.”
